Personal Nursing Education: My Personal Philosophy Of Nursing

As I reflect on my nursing education, I relieved that I have unexpectedly created a set of values and beliefs for myself, otherwise known as my personal nursing philosophy. I believe that the core of nursing is advocacy, knowledge, integrity and caring. The focus of nursing is on patient need and patient health. According to the (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2017), “nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.” I believe that nursing is an art allowing the nurse to be competent, …show more content…

I want my philosophy of nursing to reflect Jean Watson’s “Philosophy and Science of Caring Theory.” Jean Watson theorized that caring is central to nursing in that is encompasses all aspect of the patient including family, community and culture. She states that caring for patients enhance growth; in that a caring environment will accept an individual for who they are and what they will become (Nursing Theory, 2016). According to Watson’s theory (2016), caring exist in our every day lives, however caring in nursing is a way of coping with the environment. The four major concepts in Watson’s theory are: the human being, health, environment and nursing. Watson defines the human being as “...a valued person in and of himself to be cared for, respected, nurtured, understood and assisted (Nursing Theory, 2016).” Like Watson, I believe a human’s health includes the overall function of physical, mental and social well being, the ability to adapt and maintain a daily level of function and not merely the absent of …show more content…

It is essential to consider environmental health factors because it can possibly provide an opportunity for prevention. Ensuring patient safety in the nursing environment is a major responsibility because as nurses, we must be able to minimize the risk of patient harm as much as possible. Nurses must have the skills to demonstrate effective use of technology and practices that support the safety of the patient. The worst thing is for the patient to come into the hospital with additional medical problems than when they were first admitted. The nurse in the hospital must communicate observations or concerns related to hazards and error to patients, families and the healthcare team. The nurse should not blame harm on others, must be held accountable for errors, and engage in root cause analysis to find the exact root cause of the problem.
