Karl Max once said, “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.” Things that were engaging and elegant at one time don't generally remain so into the present day. Romeo and Juliet is a play written by Willian Shakespeare about two star-crossed lovers whose passing’s at last accommodate their fighting families. Romeo and Juliet is still relevant to a modern audience because of arranged marriages and revenge.
During the Elizabethan society, one was to have arranged marriages by your parents. This conflict happens to Juliet when Capulet wants her to marry Paris, and Juliet refuses. Capulet responds by saying “God's bread, it makes me mad. Day, night, hour, tide, time, work, play, Alone, in company, still my care hath been to have her matched. And having now provided A gentleman of noble parentage, of fair demesnes, youthful, and nobly ligned, / Graze where you will you shall not house with me” (Shakespeare 3.5.187-200). When Juliet declines to wed Paris, Lord Capulet gets furious. This violence still happens to families and societies that are in conflict today. Parents arrange marriages in different cultures against their parents’ wishes like Capulet did to Juliet. Juliet does not want to wed Paris, but her father arranged the marriage between them. One situation in wanting revenge is when Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo wants revenge on Tybalt, so he kills him. Romeo was furious because of Mercutio’s death so he yelled “Alive in triumph, and Mercutio slain! Away to heaven, respective lenity and fire-eyed fury be my conduct now” (Shakespeare 3.1.127-129). Romeo kills Tybalt because he was mad that he kills his relative. Romeo killing Tybalt is an example of revenge which often we seek for in today’s society. It is not common today for society to look for some type of revenge when you are hurt by an

The story between two lovers whose families are diverse and hate each other “Romeo and Juliet” written by William Shakespeare. The story which almost everyone knows about and recognizes because of the storyline and because it’s written by the well-known writer in literature Shakespeare. In the text “When in Doubt, It’s from Shakespeare” written by Thomas Foster the author tells the readers “There is a ubiquity to Shakespeare’s work that makes it rather like a sacred text: at some very deep level he is ingrained in our psyches” (Foster 37). Shakespeare’s work is an important part of history which still lives on until this day and there are many writers who incorporate Shakespeare’s
Romeo & Juliet is a play written by Shakespeare in 1594-1596. Romeo & Juliet is a tragic play about two families (Montague and Capulet) whose family feud ruined the love live of their star-cross’d children. He was inspired to write his own play because author Arthur Brooke wrote a tragic play about “two star-cross’d lovers” called Romeus and Juliet and he was as well inspired by Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1582, but Shakespeare’s tragedies were more tragic than Arthur Brooke’s because in Romeus and Juliet they were together for 3 months but in Romeo and Juliet they were together for 1 night.
In 1596, William Shakespeare published the tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. The origins of this story are uncertain but Shakespeare’s chief source for his adoption of the story was from “…The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet, a poem by Arthur Brooke (1562). He also knew the story from Palace of Pleasure, by William Painter, which appeared in several editions prior to 1580.”(Boyce 563) Shakespeare’s classic tale is about “two young lovers caught in the crossfire of a senseless family feud.”(Shakespeare 3) This feud between the two families ultimately is the cause of the two lovers untimely demise. In 1996, Baz Luhrmann produced a modern film of the classic tragedy entitled William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet. Adding familiar images and common ideas, Luhrmann brought the classic story to modern times. Though Romeo + Juliet has many differences from the original version from Shakespeare, it supports the original characters, themes, dialogue, and key issues of the classic tale of the star-crossed lovers.
Many great works that have been written before 1900 are Shakespeare’s works. One of these is The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Some say that this work is one of the best tragedies of all time. Also some say that this still can be applied to daily life and is still relevant as much now as it was back then but, there is an argument against that. The argument is that this story is irrelevant. Especially since the creation of electronics and the constant changing of the english language people think this story is completely irrelevant to a person in modern times. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is an irrelevant work for a person in modern times due to the lack of, modern english, modern love concepts, and storyline.
Revenge is a fairly strong emotion; it’s wanting to retaliate towards those who wronged you. Revenge is such an uncontrollable way of retaliation that it can result in a destructive outcome or carried out successfully. Although the results may vary, revenge sums up to one thing which is pain of some sort, affecting both parties or just one. Throughout history we see many tales of revenge and redemption. Often revenge does leave the one carrying it out feeling victorious but this can suddenly change as the process of karma generally begins in some tales.
The purpose of revenge is to hurt someone because of how they hurt you or someone else. Someone will find the smallest things to get revenge on because of the hate in their heart, and always wants to hurt to someone. Revenge is played a major role in the play Much Ado About Nothing written by William Shakespeare. I never heard the urge to get revenge on someone, because karma will get him or her eventually.
Pleasing their husbands, parents, and families were all things women should aspire to do. At the beginning of the play, Juliet follows gender conventions. She always obeyed her parents and did what they wanted her to do. After Juliet meets Romeo, things change dramatically. Juliet breaks gender conventions by denying her parents request for her to marry her suitor Paris, something that was unheard of in Elizabethan times. It is said that “Marriages were usually arranged by the families of the bride and the groom in order for both sides to benefit from one another” (Women's Rights in Romeo and Juliet 1). When Juliet's father finds out she does not want to marry Paris, her father says “Hang thee, young baggage, disobedient wretch!
Revenge is such an enormous part of a being human. It is something that no matter how much you try to avoid part of you will persistently lust for it. When you are hurt in any way your natural instinct will always tell you to make the one who hurt you feel just as bad if not worse as how you felt. It is such a natural and powerful feeling, that when revenge is incorporated into a story it makes it so much stronger. Revenge will make you see so many more sides of characters and make them seem much more complex. Revenge can give fictional characters a more human quality. That is why so many writers use it as their theme.
The classic play Romeo and Juliet by the famous playwright William Shakespeare is one of the most beautiful love stories of all time and has captured and inspired readers everywhere. Regardless of the fact that it was written in the 1500’s, it is still being performed and extolled today. There is a multitude of reasons for such continuance of the play. First of all, its everlasting themes of love and hate enable people to deeply relate to the story. Secondly, its memorable characters deeply imprint on the minds of readers. And lastly, above all, is its magnificent language which many writers today regard in awe. These three elements make the acclaimed play, Romeo and Juliet, one of the most timeless stories of our lives.
It is the idea of revenge that sends a cool shiver down the spines of justly men when they begin to question as to why someone would stoop to such a level. But yet it is still more than an idea for revenge has been carried out in various forms along all the eras of history side-by-side of that of novels and tragedies. Even so, revenge is still a dark scheme; an evil plague of the mind per se. It is such a plague that will turn even the greatest persons of the brightest, optimistically capable of minds into lowly, as well as lonely, individuals. Thus, revenge will, and can, only end in despair and agony of the mind. Therefore, provided that all that has been said is true, revenge would appear quite unseemly to the observant onlooker. However, taking an in-depth insight into revenge you can uncover quite a compelling feature, which is best summed up into one word. Pride. Pride is the one clear motivational proprietor needed to push a protagonist into the downward spiral of personal vendetta. Without pride, revenge is no more than a mindless massacre of flesh and bone ending in the obliteration of any hope for reconciliation.
Shakespeare's life is different than mine, you're probably wondering how. Well there are many ways that are lives are the same but also there are, any ways that are life is different. One of my first ways that are life is different is they wouldn't allow women to be on stage so when there was a girl part in the play they would have boys dress up as girls. Next reason is if someone did something wrong or if the police thought they did something wrong they would kill them on the spot even if it wasn't them. Also if someone was sick they would take them to a separate room so that they would not share their sickness with other people.
Juliet’s arranged marriage with Paris, as well as the ancient feud between Capulets and Montagues, eventually contributed to the deaths of their children. In Act 1 Scene 2, Paris asks Capulet, ‘But now, my lord, what say you to my suit?’ which shows that Capulet and Paris are discussing Juliet’s possible marriage without consulting her, perhaps implying they think she is too nave to decide on her future. They are arranging her marriage for her, which implies that men are very controlling of women’s lives, especially those of their daughters. The scene establishes how Juliet is subject to parental influence, and how she is very constrained since her father can force her to marry whoever he wants. Juliet’s status as a woman leaves her with no power or choice in the decision of whom she should marry.
Most people may have different perspectives on Shakespeare. Some may even think that he shouldn't be taught in 9th grade curriculum. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and believe that he should still be taught. There are even several articles debating whether he should still be taught in the 9th grade. They just go to show how relevant he still is today and how well known he is globally and also a good point of view on why he shouldn't be in 9th grade curriculum. I believe Shakespeare should still be in the 9th grade curriculum.
