The drastic rate at which women fall victim to sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo requires International aid. The most effective of all international efforts is the United Nations. The United Nations has always lent a helping hand to countries in need; however, the UN has only adequately aided the DRC in solving the sexual violence crisis. In point of fact, the United Nations contributes to the problem of sexual violence in the DRC due to the rates at which peacekeepers sexually assault Congolese women seeking refuge (Notar, 2006). Founded by Dr. Denis Mukwege, the Panzi Hospital not only treats the physical wounds resulted from sexual violence, this hospital also provides patients with psychosocial services. The hospital utilizes a treatment process developed by Dr. Mukwege called the Panzi model. This model employs a holistic process that treats victims in the following order: physical care, psychosocial support, community reintegration services, legal assistance, and education and advocacy. Thus, victims who receive this holistic treatment leave the Panzi hospital not only physically and mentally cured, but also equipped with empowering knowledge and the confidence to reintegrate back into their communities. Dr. Mukwege is one of the most influential advocates against sexual violence in the DRC. Unfortunately, this puts Dr. Mukwege at a high risk for targeted violence. In point of fact, Dr. Mukwege and his family were held at gunpoint as a result of his speech at the UN where he denounced those responsible for the sixteen year long conflict in the DRC. Resultantly, Dr.Mukwege and his family had to flee the DRC for their safety; however, his patients urged for him to return, convincing him to return back to his important work at the Panzi Hospital (Panzi Foundation, 2017).
