Introduction Sexual orientation in public schools is now a social norm. Many individuals feel that sexual deviance should be embraced and accepted as a natural part of life. It is a concept I feel very strongly about and do not believe that it should be an acceptable practice and viewed as a normal process. I realize that each individual has their own set of beliefs and have the right to accept or deny the Christian doctrines. As an educator, I may not have the ability to enforce my Christian beliefs, but I do have the right to state my opinion and hold to my convictions. One of the females attending school has decided that she want to be referred to as a male. She has altered her appearance to look masculine. She has also decided that she wants to alter her name to be called by what she considers to be her male name. Many of the children at the school and faculty members have honored her request. Her school records and name clearly states that she is a female and list her name based on her birth records. The laws are changing dramatically concerning this matter. As I continue to work in the educational field or another field of study I am confident in my ability to maintain my ethics as a leader and Christian. In working with my students, I can model what professional values and morals look like. When encountering other in my field I am able to address concerns and topics in a professional manner without compromising my code of ethics. Plan for Personal Growth with Future Goals and/or Plan of Action for the Future While evaluating the circumstances this past week there are definitely some questions and procedures that need to be addressed. Staff development on how to meet the needs of those individuals that may have extenuating circumstances such as the young lady mentioned. There needs to be clarity on how to address future concerns on similar issues and others that may compromise individual’s religious beliefs or rights. It is also equally important for adults and students to learn how to interact with a diverse group of individuals from different backgrounds and non-religious and religious affiliations.
When it comes to monitoring and ensuring the well-being of school-aged children, the agendas of most of our nation’s parents, teachers, and public education policy makers seem to be heavily focused on topics such as bullying, drug awareness, and social development. Although each of these issues is very important and deserving of the attention it receives, there is one topic – sexual education in the public school system – that holds just as much relevance amongst today’s youth, and yet it continues to be denied the same consideration. With underage sex being one of the nation’s long-lasting taboos, one would assume that effective Sex Ed programs in the public school system would be geared towards today’s youth. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case, especially for those residents of the state of Florida. Reflective of the predominantly conservative mindset of the early to mid 1900s, the sex education programs in the Florida education system seem to focus primarily on “abstinence-only-until-marriage” (Support SIECUS).
In 1961, Evangelist and pastor Tim LaHaye worked on informing and ridding public schools of sex education programs. In a letter that he wrote to parents at a school he said; “ As a parent, taxpayer, and a Christian, you need to be informed on the devastating Radical Sex Education Program now being advocated by some educators across America”(72). In this letter, LaHaye uses the word “devastating” to show how truly upset he was about this program. He went on to quote the bible in saying that sex was accepted in Christian beliefs and that that was not the problem. In 1970, a national survey said 70% of Americans believed “homosexuals are dangerous as teachers or youth leaders because they try to get sexually involved with children” (Herek). The idea that homosexuals are prone to child molestation has lessened in later years, however, another poll taken in 1999 stated 19% of heterosexual men and 10% of heterosexual women believed gay men are likely to molest children (Herek). Catholic officials are considering whether to ordain homosexuals as priests. This debate has been sparked by allegations, mostly by young boys and men, that priests sexual molested them. The Boy Scouts of America have declared homosexuals are not welcome in their organization, despite the fact that scoutmasters accused of molestation tend to be married. Fundamentalist Christians are determined to keep homosexuals away from children, claiming, “homosexuals molest children at a much higher rate than heterosexuals” (Traditional). This assertion is wrong, and an unfounded stereotype. Homosexuals are no more prone to child molestation than anyone else. In this paper, I will show the lack of a correlation between homosexuality and child molestation.
Currently I am working for a Christian preschool as a co-teacher for a class of eleven 3 year old children. Working for a Christian preschool you would imagine that having and displaying good morals and ethics would be a must, however just like with any workplace there are those who sometimes break or they may say bend these ethical rules and display behavior that should not be revealed in any type of situation, especially in the workplace. My ethics and values are developed from my religious beliefs, my associations with professionals, and self experiences. My religion installs values such as honesty, courtesy, and determination, which determine how I treat other people. My association with professionals helps me to embrace values, such as determination, personal integrity, accountability, and excellence, which are fundamental in designing my academic and professional paths. The experiences I have encountered in life have taught me to observe and embrace many ethical values, including ambition, integrity, and responsibility, which enable me to associate well with my family and other members of the society.

“What’s the big whoop?” asks a cute, blonde, elementary school aged boy when his teacher discusses homosexuality. He didn’t understand why people cared who other people loved. Little kids are perfect examples of how society’s negativity towards homosexuality creates homophobia. Children don’t understand why it matters who you love because they don’t see it as a problem and their opinions aren’t clouded by stereotypes. If LGBT issues were taught to these innocent, uninvolved children in elementary school, it would be more likely they would be accepting as they grew up. It is important to present LGBT in a positive light before parents, classmates, and media influence their perceptions.

I do not agree with the argument that viewing sexual orientation as innate would make more people open minded. There are some innate characteristics like sex, which is viewed as an innate characteristic caused by our biology. Since sex is viewed as an innate characteristic and viewed through the binary lens of society which creates less open-mindedness. Something perceived as innate as sex is not a topic that is discussed with an open mind. Someone is either male or female. I do not believe that viewing sexual orientation as something innate would create open minds for the topic but rather would create a thought process where a person is either one or the other, something binary. Teacher Ethics “Ethics are defined as a set of principles of right conduct; the rules or standards governing the conduct of a person or the members of a profession” (Dictionary of the Human Language, 2000). Teachers are often put in situations that require more than just knowing the basic school rules. It is within these situations, that the ethical dilemmas occur. There is not always a right way to deal with the many daily problems that face educators, but there are ways to handle situations that are better than others. Teachers should follow and refer to a code of ethics to help teach in the most appropriate and ethical way as well as a guide to help deal with dilemmas.
