Every career field has its dark secrets that no one wants to talk about, even the best fields that a person could go into. Many people do not understand that there will always be setbacks and problems within a career field and that they need to overcome them. The one career field that no one suspects having dark secrets and problems is the the culinary industry. One of the dark secrets is that this career is difficult for women. A career in the field of culinary arts is hard for women to pursue because they have to choose between their family and their career, there is extreme stress that could lead to mental and physical problems, and there is evident sexism within the industry. This always throws people off because most people believe that women belong in the kitchen based on history. It may not seem like it, but the culinary industry is dominated by men. Stephanie Konkol, the author of Someone’s In The Kitchen, Where’s Dinah? Gendered Dimensions Of The Professional Culinary World, wrote, “First, as a woman in culinary, I was in the minority. The majority of students in my classes were men, probably 85% percent” (4). This is hard for some people to believe because most of the domesticated cooking is done by women, but in the industry, men think that women can not handle it. During her interview, Sarah answered the question about if there was sexism in the field with, “Yes! Girls need to be very though in this industry” (Waller). Sarah has had many years of experience within this industry and she had her share of sexism while working. She stated, “Guys think they are the boss of you because they are men” (Waller). Females are normally seen as weaker than men because of their physical attributes, which can make men think that they are not suited for this industry. The main reason why there are more males than females in this industry simply comes down to that males were first accepted to this industry and made it almost impossible to women to be part of.
