Sex is an Issue of Self Respect
Being a Christian has changed my perspective on the value of my body. Since becoming a Christian I have had a hard time understanding why or how a girl could belittle herself by so freely giving her body to someone else. Growing up in
Philadelphia, I witness this in many different ways. Whether it is a prostitute standing on the corner, or a good friend that sleeps around, the lack of respect these women have for themselves is very visible, and very sad. I am a social work major, and I would someday like to work with teenagers, which is why I am taking the time now to try to understand the reasoning for their foolish and dangerous choices. Why do teenage girls have such little respect for themselves? I am sure that each of these girls have her own theories and reasons for her actions. I believe the most obvious causes are; they were never taught that it was wrong, most guys treat girls with disrespect, and the fact that somebody wants
them make them feel loved.
Sadly enough, a girl having no respect for herself is not a new thing. Girls just
aren't taught that it is wrong to abuse their bodies or give away something that is
supposed to be so sacred. It seems that some parents these days do not know how to
handle their kids and are often too lenient with them. It also seems that role models in
today's society advertise sex in subtle, yet noticeable ways. I think the media plays a
huge role in the misleading of teenage minds. Entertainment, such as singers and actors
are not even chosen based on talent anymore, they are hired based on the right look; it is
all about sex appeal.
Another obvious cause is, there are so many guys in today's society who were not raised to respect women. They think of women as sex objects, and unimportant people they can control. It is normal to be somewhat dependant on men, but women today seem to become totally reliant on men. In most cases that can be very unhealthy or dangerous. Men know these women "need" them, so they think they can get away with playing with their heads and their hearts.
Women are under the false impression that if a man wants to sleep with her he
...her seem to be behaving and influencing on young teenagers in the wrong way. For example, most of the girls out there praise themselves that they are better looking than the other. As a result, they seem to be manipulative, disrespectful and meant to others. And this creates mainly conflicts, violence in our society today.
With so many opportunities to learn about their sexuality denied, Latina girls are forced to empower their own sexual knowledge on their own or with the help of friends. One example is through the use of self-respect. Similar to how mothers often instill a sense of self-respect on to their daughters, many Latina girls use the same concept to redefine the concept of the good girl/ bad girl dichotomy. Instead of the act itself automatically labeling girls as bad girls, it is the reasoning behind their sexual activities that ultimately matter. If a girl has sex within an established sexual relationship, that may or may not be defined as love, she is viewed as a good girl. But if a girl has indiscriminate sexual relations without regard to their own sexual health, she is labeled a skank or a hoe and thus a bad girl. Additionally, young Latinas often empower their sexuality, through the
...ults in body shame, and because these women view themselves as less, they are treated as such. Sexually objectified women are “dehumanized and seen as less competent and less worthy by men and women”. This causes men to be “more tolerant of sexual harassment and rape myths”. This is evident in the Pilot episode of Gossip Girl. Serena is known as the “it” girl and because of this image her male peers believe her to be sexually available to anyone at anytime. Chuck attempts to coerce her into having sex because he knows that Serena has had sex with her bestfriend’s boyfriend. Boys quickly adopt the hypersexualized images of females and apply them to girls. As a result they lack respect for girls, and when they make sexual advances on them they are deemed as harmless. Rape and sexual violence becomes normalized, and sexual predators go unpunished in mainstream media.
This thought has been held on for far too long. In a consumer-driven society, advertisements invade the minds of every person who owns any piece of technology that can connect to the internet. Killbourne observes that “sex in advertising is pornographic because it dehumanizes and objectifies people, especially women,” (271). Advertising takes the societal ideology of women and stereotypes most kids grow up learning and play on the nerves of everyone trying to evoke a reaction out of potential customers, one that results in them buying products.
Girls were only supposed to be cute for boys, they were meant to be quiet and not react to when they found out that their boyfriends were actually cheating on them. Boys took pride to have two girlfriends or even cheat on their girlfriends, it raised their egos when they were with their friends, and they didn’t care about how the girl was scarred and scared to find another boyfriend. Yet, when a girl cheated on a boy, and broke his heat, she was a slut and a whore. She was demonized for “having fun” in a boy’s case, for expressing her sexuality and enjoying herself her reputation and name was trashed and none of the boys cared if it hurt her in any way. All throughout high school I witnessed this pattern, I heard and watched boys howl and cat call girls, insult their looks, and destroy their self-confidence for nothing. When they were the ones who were ugly, even if they weren’t they were ugly on the inside and to them being ugly themselves isn’t the problem. Men worry more about if their dates are ugly and if their girlfriends are fat, when women only care about is if this man will hurt them in any way. Smiler states this perfectly, when she talks about the double standard of both genders being manipulative. She talks about women being manipulative in a way of pleasing, while men are manipulative in a way that tells they only what their next lay. Women are supposed to be prudish but
They are wrapped up in a vicious cycle, as Johnson stated. Men fear being controlled and they assert that control by using violence to create fear. When men feel emasculated, which they often do in relationships, things take a turn for the worse. The most interesting part of the whole thing is that relationships are supposed to be a place where one another connects. They are supposed to be vulnerable to each other, but yet many men are still unable to do this.
Media is different forms of communication, such as radio, newspapers, and television, that are directed to mass audiences. Kilbourne’s presentation explores how media, specifically advertisements, have unrealistic and unhealthy perceptions of beauty, perfection and sexuality.
Sexualization of women is taught to the public from an early age through the media. This is not a new phenomena, however. As Roberts and Zurbriggen (2012) address, the problem exponentially compounds over time, as evolving mass communication technology creates more opportunities for the press to teach sexualization. New technology is not entirely negative though, as it allows the public to more easily engage in discussions regarding the expression of
Parent has changed with the years. Spanking a child was okay in the past, but is frowned upon. Some parents believe in talking through situations. “In any society, parenting beliefs are a reflection of that society 's cultural values and traditions” (Hulei, Zevenbergen, & Jacobs, 2006). Traditions in one culture may not be accepted in another culture. Traditions change with the times; what is accepted today may not be accepted later in the future. Parent is based on three main styles, but past research has included a fourth. This essay will describe four parenting styles and compare them to the parenting styles on the Chinese and European parents.
From a young age , many individuals worldwide are socialized according to their gender and what is appropriate for males and females. Socializing according to ones gender starts from the moment you are born when the nurses give you either a blue or pink blanket to wrap the child in. This allows society to known whether the child is a male or female. The double standard for gender occurs within many areas of development for instance the clothes one wears, the toys that are placed with, the jobs and careers one chooses in their later life. Attachment given by a child's parent reinforces an individual to be socialized and children can also contribute how their parents treat and see them , these are social constructs within parenting (Ambert,2012). All of these things can be gender separated and still are in today's society. Another area where males and females are socialized differently is in the area of sexuality and what is acceptable for males is not always for the female gender. Gender specific norms govern the appropriate amount of partners , when it is acceptable to engage in sexual activity and what motivates ones behavior (Kreager &Staff, 2009). This shows society individuals are socialized according to their gender because males are socialized into behaving a different way than girls but it still be accepted as a norm. Women are taught that it is okay to have sexual relationships but they need a reason, example being in a committed relationship, where as men just need a place. This is a common perception based on ones gender , formed from a western conservative view point ( Fugere et.al, 2008). Gender socialization is a process where boys are seen to be given wings and girls are to be given roots (Myers, Spencer, Jordan...
Sex is everywhere in our society. It is on TV, magazines, radio, billboards, and basically anywhere you look today. People cannot get away from sex in advertising because so many companies use it. Sex appeals are used in advertising all the time, and people love to look at it because 'Sometimes people listen better with their eyes' (Steel 137). Sex in advertising is an effective technique that is used today. It helps companies successfully sell their product in our market. Of course it has to be directed at the right audience, and sold at the right places in order for it to work.
They almost never give their children the basic needs and expect them to raise themselves. Most of the time, these parents are this way because of a substance abuse or mental health issues. They lack knowledge on how to raise a child and don’t know what their children are doing. There are hardly no rules and if any exceptions. The children may not obtain any encouragement or direction because of the lack of parental attention. These children tend to be the most unfortunate in life, having no rules to follow and no motivation since they lack in self-esteem and are almost always sad causing several behavioral problems.
Looking at our past, there have been dramatic changes in the way humans view sex. Long before the 1900s individuals framed their views based on the religious institution. Due to the fact that they strongly centered their idea of sexual thought on religion, they believed that the only purpose of having sex was to procreate. As the 1920’s approached, there were various factors that changed the way individuals viewed sex. The “new women” known, as flappers were women who were confident in who they were. They changed their attire as well as their social attitude. In the 1920s, the flappers redefined sex; customs and traditions were broken and new norms were created by society.
A common trend in the entertainment industry today is the objectification of women in society. Sexualizing women are seen in media such as; movies, advertisement, television show and music video, where their main focus is providing the audience with an image of women as sexual objects rather than a human. This is detrimental to society since the media is producing social stereotypes for both genders, which can further result in corrupted social habits. Objectification in media are more focused on females than male, these false images of women leave individuals with the wrong idea of the opposite sex. As media continuously use sexual contents regarding women, the audience starts underestimating women. Specifically movies, it allows media to shape the culture’s idea of romance, sex and what seems
People say, “No one is born knowing how to be a parent, but it’s a process that everyone has to go through in life as they grow older and have children.” We have to do it from the style of parents that we choose who to be, not what someone else picks for us or shows us how to do.
