Service Learning Reflection

Service learning, to me, is not much different from the community service I typically involve myself in. My community service is typically a combination of mentoring and assistant coaching for high school athletic teams because when I graduate I want to go to Law school and specialize in Sports law and agency. I worked for BYRC, and there I was still in the role of a mentor because many students asked me for advice and talked to me about personal issues, but I was also in to position of a tutor. Teaching is one of my strong point, when I know the material, however I was asked to tutor students in math, science, and English. I learned that I am an audible and practice oriented learner. I had to speak out or listen to lessons of math and science, and then practice it for myself. The same goes for most of the classes I have at LSU. Teaching and mentoring those students reminded me of how important it is to love and value my education and my accessibility to knowledge. Even learning things that may not interest me will still open my mind. Education enables students like myself the ability to think past the constructions of society and construct our own voice and perspective. This was a lesson I learned through teaching a sophomore at BRYC. Her homework assignment was to right a paper on the importance and development of the education system in regards to African American, this was a paper for her history class. After reading her paper, I asked her, “Do you believe that our access to education was not always afforded to us, and that it is often something everyone take for granted?” I realized instantly that I was asking myself that same question, and admitted to her that I appreciated my education but often took it for granted because I was always drowning in
