Education gives us knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something even better. Access to education is the foundation of a democratic society, because it provides an opportunity for all to achieve the American Dream, ensures equality and justice, and allows for our country to compete globally for a prosperous future. Some people argue that parents should have the choice to send their children to whatever school they want, however, if we drain public school dollars to fund private school education we create an unequal system where well off children are better educated and less fortunate children are left without resources or access to a quality education. Inequities in funding and educational resources place poor children in low-performing schools with run-down facilities and ineffective teachers (Giving Point).These inequalities in resources contributes to students getting discouraged and detached, and hurts our whole society. Ideally, the education system in the United States aims to serve as the great equalizer in the constant struggle to counter decades and centuries of historical oppression against those of non-European descent. The ideology of education as a great equalizer purports a pedagogy as a starting point for those oppressed and separated by such forces as race and class to have access to a quality education, and hence an equal chance at all the US has to offer. It attempts to bring children from disparate realms in a place that serves them all equitably. This ideal constantly challenges the broader values of equality, liberty and democracy considered to be at the core of American ideology. In interpreting this conception, two questions are indirectly answered by examining our educational practices: Does equality in education simply foresee that all students are treated the same, despite their different needs? Or, does it intend to challenge and rectify past inequalities for a truly equitable educational system?
In this day and age, it is almost impossible to be a middle or upper class citizen without a college degree, so without the ability to finish high school or have enough educational merit to get a college scholarship, these kids will always be in the lower class. Fixing this issue would prepare the United States for a future with more black people in the middle and upper class. A solution to this problem is to have more government funding to high schools in poor neighborhoods. This can provide better school supplies, more qualified teachers, and improved school facilities. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, A twenty percent increase in per-student spending a year for impoverished children can lead to an additional year of completed education, twenty five percent higher earnings, and a twenty-percentage point reduction in the chances of poverty in adulthood (Samuels, Alana). Public education in the United States is exalted as the “great equalizer.” This utopian concept would be true if the education provided to all citizens was equal. Unfortunately, the dueling principles upon which the American nation was founded— freedom to accumulate wealth and equality for all—inhibit the establishment and maintenance of equal education. Funding inequities within the United States public education system embody the tension between one’s right to accumulate capital and one’s duty to guarantee equality for all. As the current system stands, the right to accumulate and utilize financial resources prevails. Thus, an educational system that perpetuates the economic inequality of America’s racial groups endures.

Vouchers have not been received so joyously by all. The controversy of using vouchers to “redirect public funds to private organization, including religiously affiliated private schools.” This controversy shows a depiction of linking church and state.
In January 2013 a prominent national US newspaper quoted former Secretary of State, Condolezza Rice, “It doesn’t matter where you come from, but where you are going.” However, In “The Land of Opportunity,” James Loewen discusses how significant inequality is in America. The social class that you are born into will influence your outlook on social class and will also be the social class you stay in (Loewen, 1995. 322). Your social class will determine the opportunities available for you including health, fitness, nutrition, education, SAT scores, medical resources and more (Loewen, 1995. 321-322). Loewen also proposes that the education system in America does not incorporate a proper analysis of our social class (Loewen, 1995. 323). It is necessary for students to be realistic about social inequality because it is linked with history. As students, we are socialized from an early age to believe in the American Dream through media and our loved ones. We were raised to believe our merit determines our success. In reality race and ethnicity, class, and gender play vital roles in determining where an individual ends up in life.
