During my Service Learning, there were interactions between me and the residents and I was able to learn and change certain concepts about this experience. I completed my hours at the Utah Independent Living Center, where I was able to watch a couple of youth and adult classes that were being taught to individuals with disabilities. While I was there, I would observe and interact with them and help them if they needed it. First, they would have classes that were on topics such as goals, literacy, manners, communication, etc. During these classes, I would help them with things like making an art craft, read, create poems, circling the correct homophone, etc. When they were learning about goals, I would ask them questions, such as “what’s going to help you accomplish your goal?” or “do you know when you want to accomplish your goal by?” In other words, I would ask them questions that would help them create SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) goals. Not only that, but they also had support groups where they talked about whatever they wanted. I believe that those who judge people with disabilities so badly should probably spend a day with these individuals to see how they really are. If I had the time, I would definitely go back because people with disabilities are seriously some of the best people. When I was there, the time passed by so quick of how much I enjoyed it, but I didn’t like that classes were only for about an hour and sometimes there were only two classes, I wished that classes were a bit longer. During my service I hope to gain a lot of knowledge in working with those who have all different kinds of disabilities. I have worked with people with disabilities and special needs before, but I would like to be able to better my understanding and knowledge in this field, and be able to be as effective as I can in helping and serving these people. I want to gain more patience, knowing that it will take more time and patience to work with them sometimes. I want to take time understanding and giving each individual my full attention. There were quite many relations made between my service learning experiences and themes addressed in the course. Some of the connections were about human self-respect, unity, and fairness. The social ties hold people together and can support the people who do not have the power to help each other. It was interesting for me to employ my skills and knowledge I learned in the classroom to serve those who need help.
My overall experience in Intro to Human Services was phenomenal. This class was definitely one of my favorite classes this semester. I loved the way it was taught and I was able to understand how human services works while reading the book Precious throughout the semester. This course isn’t an easy class that you can just relax and breeze through. It has a lot of fundamental chapters that explain the jobs of helpers also known as human service workers. I loved how we were supposed to read the chapters before class and then we would review in class. It made more sense by doing it this way. It never felt like we were rushing through the material and the pace of the class was perfect. I also loved how professor Oropall always was willing to explain
important issues, gain new perspectives and provides learning experiences for volunteers as well as individuals from underserved groups. Because of the numerous benefits, college students should enroll in the Service Learning courses or service learning based programs. These programs allows students to move away from the dualism versus unity point of view and focus on reciprocity and provides the skills necessary to approach future service experiences with a service learning perspective.
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. According to nationalhumanservices.org human services is a very unique feild to work in. They defined this position as the, “objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” . In other words, preventing conflicts and improving the lives of many different individuals using knowledge.
Previous experience of working in the care industry, with adults with a wide range of needs and disabilities, has given me the experience of working with a diverse range of people. I am currently an administrator for a charity whose service users are adults with learning disabilities. Being caring and compassionate has helped build up a strong relationship with the service users, which in turn has helped me gain their trust. For my service learning experience, I volunteered at Change Point Center. This course has taught me a lot about the role human service workers have in communities and what communities need from human services. I learned about why this type of work is so important and was able to seen that importance first hand through my observation hours at the Dorothy Day Center.
We would learn different skills and practice them on dummies. While doing this we would also learn about how to treat the residents. Finally clinicals approached, and we would get to go to an actual assisted living facility to practice all of our skills. I remember on the very first day the twinge of apprehensiveness that burst through my stomach. I had never been in a nursing home or worked with the elderly.
This experience differed from the medical experience I had before, as now I was not just observing but also actually interacting with the patient. My previous experience working in a rehabilitation center made me more ready for what to expect when interacting with elderly patients. I believe that I handled the experience very well; there is nothing I think I would do differently. With more exposure to this type of situation I am sure that I will become more adept in my skills and techniques.
In order to fulfill the 12 hours of community service requirement for Nutrition course 139 I applied with five organizations on the approved list. The organization that replied me the fastest was Open Heart Kitchen, they mostly operate in Pleasanton and Livermore areas. Their application and signing up for shift process gives a feeling that this organization is massive, and many individuals really care about the less fortunate. From observation and conversations with the site supervisor, I believe this organization relies on individual donations, small business donations and large corporate donations such as Safeway and Walmart. This organization also relies on volunteers to work every day, they get workers from students fulfilling their hours and resume, individuals fulfilling court orders, and those that just want to help the less fortunate.

Describe what did you do at your service site: At my service site, I was given the vague instruction by one of the teachers to “simply interact with the kids and get out of my comfort zone.” A class was conducting an “outdoors” lessons where students were learn basic math skills like adding and multiplying numbers in the form a game which involved the use of two dice and a chart. The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience.
I volunteered at East Parkside Nursing Home through my church 's mentoring program. At first, I was somewhat uncomfortable volunteering at a nursing home because my great-grandfather, among many others, was mistreated in a nursing home. But, as the day went on and we engaged in activities with the residents, I eventually calmed down and got into the smooth of things. We had one-on-one contact with the seniors, and we learned about their lives and families. One of the seniors was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War and he told all of the volunteers a few short war stories. For several residents, their families rarely visited them, so they genuinely appreciated the volunteers spending time with them. Later, we made holiday cards and sang Christmas carols for the senior citizens. They seemed so elated and pleased, which made me feel so fulfilled that I could make someone 's day by doing something so
