For my service learning project I worked with the challenger learning center by helping them get ready, setup, and working with them at their booth during the pumpkins in the park event. This service learning project not only gave me a chance to study myself and how I work and act with new people, but it also gave me a chance to study other people and how they work with the people they know and don’t know. The entire time I was volunteering I was creating interpersonal perceptions of the people around me and my relationships with them. At first I perceived this event as just things that college students had to do in order to pass a class, and these other people had to do it because it was there job. The more time that was spend with these people helped me put a better meaning as to why all of us are here. Not just because us college students had to for a project because we could have picked numerous different ways to do our community service. We did it because we all shared an interest in helping the Challenger Learning Center create a fun and educational booth for all the kids. Same with the people that work at there, they weren’t getting paid to do this. They did this because they love their job and wanted the kids to have a good time but also learn something in the process. So by the end of the volunteering my interpersonal perception of this event was clear and I finally was able to put meaning to it. Selecting to do my service learning at Harvest Hope Food Bank was a very impactful experience. This was so, because of the fact that I have never volunteered at a food bank until now. The organization was able to connect me with the required skills I will practice throughout my career as a professional social worker, therefore better preparing me for assisting clients who may be dependent on my services.
My favorite service project was my silver award for girl scouts. Before Jamie Lince, Faith Brown, and I did the silver award the hoophouse by the elementary school was very rundown. There were holes in the plastic, weeds in the beds, and the wood chips in the aisles were worn down. The hoophouse couldn’t be used. We wanted to fix that problem. First we applied for grants. I never knew how many steps or how much time this would take. It really taught me how to handle deadlines so things get turned in on time. It also taught me that there are people that want to support you, and you just need to find them. The two grants that we received were a Lowes grant for fifteen-hundred dollars and a seed grant from Van Atta’s. The second step was to get people to help weed out the beds so we could plant the seeds we got from the grant. This took a few hours and a lot of people from the community showed up to help. The Lowes grant was used for the plastic that goes on the outside of the hoophouse and new wood chips for the aisles in the hoophouse. We had to have the help of Mr. Montry who makes hoop house...
Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it.
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. According to nationalhumanservices.org human services is a very unique feild to work in. They defined this position as the, “objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” . In other words, preventing conflicts and improving the lives of many different individuals using knowledge.
Each school, because of government mandate, has to provide services for exceptional students. The textbook Human Diversity in Education defines exceptional students as “those eligible for special educational services” (Cushner, McClelland & Safford, 2011). There are several categories for exceptional student but they all fall under the Ability/Disability continuum. Some of the categories for exceptional students are the: intellectually gifted, specific learning disability, emotionally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually impaired, mentally handicapped, and physically handicapped. In this paper the specific type of students that will be discussed, fall under the disabled side of the continuum. As one can see from the list above there are various types of disabilities that can affect students. One of the disabilities that affect many students in schools today is known as the Learning Disability (LD). Students with learning disabilities, also known as specific learning disabilities, tend to be of at least average intelligence. Of at least average intelligence is the key phrase. A learning disability is defined as “a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information” (National Center for Learning Disabilities,). Learning disabilities can affect students in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling, reasoning, and mathematics. A student that has a learning disability can at times suffer for a social anxiety. Though social anxiety can be something minor, for students with this disability 2011it can cause major problems. Going into camp I knew we would be helping out a school and I did not think I would have fun or get anything out of the experience, but I was so wrong. Even when I was on my hands and knees stripping wax off a classroom floor, I was having a great time just knowing how much my work was helping Ms. Kim and Cody and everyday I looked forward to going back. We later found out that Cody was able to take a week long vacation because we got so much of his work done! After finding that out, I knew I had helped make a difference in Cody's life which made me feel so humble and honored that I could do that for him. During our work, Ms. Kim told us that around 70% of the Black Fox Elementary students live in poverty and cannot wait to come to school so they escape their troubles at home. Ms. Kim told us that those kids were going to be so excited to see how clean we got their school to be and I wish I could have seen their faces when they saw what we had done. I now look forward to volunteering and helping others because I know that I am making a difference in someone's life, which is a humbling and amazing feeling that I hope everyone can experience one

The People’s participation in maintaining an agreeable government depends on a collective activism regarding both state and local civic affairs.
I enjoyed this experience so much, that I decided to go back to volunteer for Change Point, and will be going there once a week. This experience had the impact it did because I got to connect with the community in which change Point serves and help assist others. By doing this, I gained hands-on experience in which will help me in my future career. I also was able to enhance my skills in being a leader and in communication. The parenting classes that I taught to others not only helped them but also helped me.
I felt as if I was able to make a change even though it wasn't a major change. I also loved working with kids of all ages ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade. They all brought a different personality which I enjoyed. Overall, volunteering anywhere helps someone make a change in someones life and their own even though they may not notice it. There are many people who are in need of volunteers all the time and not many people get the opportunity to volunteer during their lifetime.
This course has taught me a lot about the role human service workers have in communities and what communities need from human services. I learned about why this type of work is so important and was able to seen that importance first hand through my observation hours at the Dorothy Day Center.
I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer at the elementary school. It opened my eyes to a few of the problems in our communities. I was able to make others aware of those problems through volunteering and being proactive. I am going to continue with the program for as long as I am able to do so. If only we had millions of these programs across the globe, many other children would be able to benefit and develop the skills to succeed educationally.
I think this entire experience has been amazing and everyone should volunteer at least once in their life. It might even change their major! I had already planned on working with my community, specifically in the behavioral/mental health area, so this experience just opened my eyes to how much of a difference I can make by such simple gestures. I conducted health fairs and other community outreach programs that educate and provide valuable resources to people. I also worked closely with NorthEast Emergency Distribution Services (NEEDS) program to provide canned food for under-fortunate people. In the article “Service Learning at a Glance,” author Linda Adler-Kassner argues that, when planned and developed carefully, service learning is beneficial to both students and the community. Service learning involves a long-term partnership between students in a composition class and a community organization, as opposed to regular community service spanning only a short period of time to fulfill the imposed requirements. Due to the fact that service learning is more effective in helping the learning, networking, and helping the community, it truly is a more productive system than community service alone. With precise conceptualization and organizing, service learning has the potential to better educate the students involved. Many students retain more information with hands-on procedures rather than simply lectures.
I volunteered at East Parkside Nursing Home through my church 's mentoring program. At first, I was somewhat uncomfortable volunteering at a nursing home because my great-grandfather, among many others, was mistreated in a nursing home. But, as the day went on and we engaged in activities with the residents, I eventually calmed down and got into the smooth of things. We had one-on-one contact with the seniors, and we learned about their lives and families. One of the seniors was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War and he told all of the volunteers a few short war stories. For several residents, their families rarely visited them, so they genuinely appreciated the volunteers spending time with them. Later, we made holiday cards and sang Christmas carols for the senior citizens. They seemed so elated and pleased, which made me feel so fulfilled that I could make someone 's day by doing something so
