In chapter 3 of On Course, Downing talks about the importance of personally discovering self-motivation in order to reach your goals. This chapter talks about Creating Inner Motivation, Designing a Compelling Life Plan, Committing to Your Goals and Dreams, and as always the importance of believing in yourself. Creating inner motivation is important, because the ACT and Policy Center on the First Year of College has identified that lack of motivation is the number one barrier to students’ success in college. The ACT also reported that “about one third of students in the U.S. four-year public colleges and universities fail to return for their second year, and in public two year colleges, it’s even worse: Nearly half of first-year students don’t …show more content…
Lewis Carroll is quoted on the margins of page 86 saying that, “One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. “Which road do I take?” she asked. “Where do you want to go?” was his response. “I don’t know,” Alice answered. “Then,” said the cat, “it doesn’t matter.”” This quote demonstrates that without clear goals or plan for what you want you want to do with your life, you can get lost easily. I already have a life plan, others might not be as far along with their life goals, as I am, but that is not a bad thing, it just means that they have some searching to do. Being able to know what you want to do with your life, and how to get there, is an important thing to figure out, as soon as you can figure out what you want to do with your life. Discovering what you want to do in your life is often a good source of motivation to reaching your goals, whenever I start to struggle or fall behind in class I start to think about what is at stake for my future, and I ask the question, “what would I do with my life, if I couldn’t be a doctor?” Being able to have clear goals of what I want to do in my life allows me to look to the goals I have set for myself in life as a source of motivation, and work as hard as I can to reach them, even against all odds. There is good goal setting guideline that On Course …show more content…
Being able to commit to your goals and dreams and promising yourself that you will do whatever it takes to reach them, will allow you to realize that you will do whatever you can to ensure that you achieve your goal. Being able to commit to your goals, and having it written and ingrained in your mind is that it will remind you think about reaching your goals, whenever and wherever possible. Having the mindset that you will do whatever it takes to reach your goals, even if things get hard, will allow you to work fully toward your goals, and if needed to think in different ways than you normally would about reaching your goals, and thus help you to succeed. Downing also talks about other methods of committing to your goals and dreams, such as visualizing your future (after you have attained what you wanted), and how you will feel after you reached everything you have worked so hard for in the past and watching it all come to fruition. Imagining that moment that you reach your goals, and you get to step back and celebrate your goals with others who helped you along the way, and thinking of how it will affect your life and others, will help you to realize what you really want in life and how it will make you feel, will help you make wise choices and set smart goals along the way to help you reach your
Important goals about life have changed significantly suggests Kohn. With goals comes the ability to be persistent, the author mentions. He describes that persistence is one characteristic among many that could become valuable when wanting to reach a goal,
Setting goals for yourself creates an individual growth. In the article, “Why we are looking at the ‘value’ of college all wrong” by Valerie Strauss, Nelson discusses how an independent learner is able to teach themselves and learn from the challenges they tend to face. “The educated graduate is an independent learner…able to direct his or her own learning in accordance with the challenges that life presents in the circumstances of his or her own life.(Strauss 1)” For example, I want to become Registered Nurse; therefore, I write that down as one of my goals. However, I would then have to write everything else in order to become a Registered Nurse. Having a goal set that I want to become a RN, I now have something to strive at and to motivate myself to reach that goal. Therefore, creating goals helps establish what direction I am trying to go in, and also allows me to figure out how to solve a problem. Another example is if I failed a test, I will try to examine the errors within my work; however, I will then create a goal for myself to make sure I do better on test the next time. Finding the errors and creating goals to fix the errors makes me an independent learner. I am taking the charge that I want to do better; therefore, I am going to create a goal to help me succeed. By fixing the errors, I then challenge myself inside and outside the

These students must think independently, act more independently, and navigate the world more independently. The college must find ways to help students motivate themselves. Be able to succeed in life, releases stress. Works Cited Whelan, Christine B. -. Helping First-Year Students Help Themselves.
Extrinsic motivation also plays a role whether the students feel self-determination to accomplish their goals or not. In an environment where the students are made to feel connected to their leaders and peers, extrinsic motivation such as good grades can serve as an extra incentive to reach their goals. In environments where students feel disconnected to those around them, extrinsic motivation can become stressful, and its role can change from supportive to
In “Choosing Success in College and Life”, Carol Kanar exposes students to the foundational skills that they will need to develop in order to be successful in the college setting. Effective interpersonal skills and understanding that people are the biggest resource can be two of the biggest factors in how a student assimilates to campus life. Students can be intimidated by all of the offices and professional titles that surround them when entering this new surrounding. It is important that students understand that their desire to succeed is met by college professionals’ mutual desire to see the same. The blueprint for this success should first begin with the students’ inner belief in themselves. Second, the student should familiarize themselves with all that the college has to offer by way of various supportive offices, support groups, and clubs. Finally, the students should begin to set scholastic, life, and financial goals for themselves.
Most people have some sort of goal that they would like to accomplish in life or a dream they want to come true. People who have these goals they want to achieve should have a plan to reach them. One of my major goals in life is to become an accountant. In order for me to achieve this dream of mine, I plan to go to college and learn all I can about being an accountant so I can become one and do my job as best I can.(Heyne). A sixteen year old peer, Kara Piper, who I interviewed has a different goal in life. Her American Dream is to have her own company and make enough money to travel the world. Her way of achieving this goal is by her family experiences in business and by the support of her family and friends. Therefore we all have hopes and dreams in life, but we all have our own idea of how to achieve them.
Being motivated is not just about a good end result, but it is about acquiring an ingrained mindset that empowers and directs one’s behavior. (Tan, OS, Parsons, R. D., Hinson, S. L., & Sardo-Brown, D., 2011) Mary Doe can clearly be seen to be unmotivated in learning as seen from her low expectations of success. She is seen to have a low gauge of her ability, which leads to her low confidence, and lowered motivation towards her academics. We will explore the possible causes, as well as solutions to aid the improvement of her motivation in learning.
When entering college freshman students face difficulties by not knowing how to adjust to the new expectations college brings. A freshman student tends to approach college with the same mentality used throughout their high school years. But as the first semester start, they encounter a variety of challenges, including having to change their study habits and knowing how to wisely manage their time. The book “The Elements of Learning” by B. Banner, Jr., and C. Cannon, introduces the elements a student must possess in order be successful in college. The research made by my team, “Collin’s Angels”, will determine important factors for freshman success, and the changes that a student makes in order to succeed through the first year of college.
Motivation is important because it allows you to work towards and complete your goals. GPA allows you to see, on average, how well a student has performed in all classes they have taken. It is likely there is a relationship between motivation and GPA. If a student is highly motivated, will their GPA rise? Based upon previous research, it is hypothesized that students who are highly motivated will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Seventeen university students, 9 male and 8 female participated in the survey. The survey included 9 questions that measured motivation, measured on a Likert scale from 1-5. [Results].
Lastly, he says to read the statement twice a day to constantly remind yourself of your goal. The key is to make an obsession out of your goal so that you will work harder to make your goal a reality. Hill also stresses the importance of having faith, and describes it as a type of self-confidence that should be carried with you daily. He talks about the principle of autosuggestion and compares it to affirmations or visualizations. If it cannot be visualized in your mind, then Hill feels that you will not be able to see it as a reality.
In daily life, we need motivation to improve our performance in our job or in studies. Motivation is an internal force, dependent on the needs that drive a person to achieve. In the other words, motivation is a consequence of expectations of the future while satisfaction is a consequence of past events (Carr, 2005). We need to give reward to our self when we did correctly or we has achieve our target. Reward is something that we are given because we have behaved well, worked hard, or provided a service to the community. Theories of motivation can be used to explain the behavior and attitude of employees (Rowley, 1996; Weaver, 1998). The theories include content theories, based on assumptions that people have individual needs, which motivate their action. Meanwhile according to Robbins (2001), motivation is a needs-satisfying process, which means that when a person's needs are satisfied by certain factors, the person will exert superior effort toward attaining organizational goals. Schulze and Steyn (2003) affirmed that in order to understand people’s behavior at work, managers or supervisors must be aware of the concept of needs or motives which will help “move” their employees to act.Theories such as Maslow (1954), McClelland (1961), Herzberg (1966) and Alderfer (1969) are renowned for their works in this field. The intrinsic reward or also be known as motivators factors is the part of Herzberg motivation theory. Motivators are involve factors built into the job or the studies itself such as achievement, recognition, responsibility and advancement. Hygiene factors are extrinsic to the job such as interpersonal relationship, salary, supervision and company policy (Herzberg, 1966. There have two factors that are called hygiene fac...

In setting a goal, you set up a grand goal and then you break it down into smaller goals. This helps you to further monitor your progress on a smaller scale and helps you stay motivated and focused because each time you achieve one of the smaller goals, it keeps you inspired to achieve the grand goal. Set goals that are definite with a well-known target to achieve, always giving yourself a specific time-stamped to achieve your goals. However, ensure that your goals and time lines set are realistic otherwise you will end frustrated chasing castles in the
