In American History we are currently studying the concept of sectionalism. Sectionalism is division within a country based on regional beliefs and interests. In the early mid 1800’s, sectionalism in America grew as slavery divided the nation. Slavery was ignored, compromised and argued about by the states until the conflict drove our country into the Civil War. Although regional differences are not as distinct these days, many issues are currently causing division among the states and people of our country. These issues lead to what our history class describes as “modern sectionalism.” One such issue is Donald Trump’s ideas. Don Melvin from CNN that is going with the wall wrote an article titled “Trump’s new idea? Walls have lined national …show more content…
Starting with the wall, the wall as I explained will eventually not work anymore. But it will still work for the time it is needed. 56% of illegal immigrants are coming out of Mexico. The Mexican border is where Trump wants to build the wall. So this will help stop 56% of illegal immigrants out of the U.S.A.. Donald Trump is also against abortion. I think that he will be able to stop abortion for good at the most. If not for good, he will at least minimize the rate of abortion. This will also increase the population over the years. So far, Donald Trump has done a lot of work in the office. He is working hard on getting rid of the things he doesn’t like that Obama created. For example Obamacare. I think that Obamacare is not the best. They call it the affordable care act. All it did was cause problems for people that already had a different insurance company. Only 44% of the U.S. citizens supported the law (Obamacare), and 56% were against. So it technically shouldn’t have even passed. Everybody is talking bad about it and thinks it’s a bad idea. So I still don’t quite get why it is a think really. Another thing that I like that Donald Trump is doing is his cabinet. His cabinet has some really good decisions and some really bad ones too. My favorite one is his secretary of defense, James Mattis. He has 44 years as a Marine Corps General. James was meant for this job, so it …show more content…
The wall will be a good idea because it will lower the rate illegal immigrants. A lot of people say it’s because Trump is racist, I agree he is but that’s not why he wants to put up the wall. He is doing it to save America money in the future. So we don’t have to spend money on people that shouldn’t even be here. If he gets rid of Obamacare, that would be a little better too. Nobody really likes Obamacare so it should just stop. If Hillary Clinton was president right now, I believe there would not be as much work done by now. Donald Trump is doing the right things and will make America great
Sectionalism and the Breakup of the U.S. Throughout the early 1800's the country was split in many areas over many issues. Some of the more severe clashes between differing groups resulting from such issues as slavery, expansion, and internal improvement. With all of these controversial topics to worry about along with the vast diversity in the nation, causing separation and tensions throughout the country. The most prominent of the previous topics was slavery.
From colonial times there were differences in geography that gave rise to variations in culture and economy in the United States. Due to the differing characteristics, a sectional economy molded the United States into two distinct regions: the north and the south. The north, a commercial society, which supported industry and commerce while the south, an agrarian civilization, flourished in the production of raw materials with use of slaves. The two economies were both self-supporting and capable to create a stronger, more productive nation. The regional differences sought to build America, in turn threatened to destroy it. Many Historians believe that the Civil War was constructed over the issue of slavery. However, the concerns of states' rights versus federal rights and the unfair legislation representation were the principal causes of the Civil War.
...en the result of slavery. The last major point where sectionalism was seen was in the Election of 1824 because people were only voting for people in their sectional region, rather than who they thought was he best candidate. In addition, all the candidates, Jackson, Adams, Clay, and Crawford were all from the same party, Republican, which contributed to the already growing sectionalism. (Doc I)
There were many problems, events, and situations that led to the Civil War. One of the major reasons for the outbreak of the war was sectionalism. Once the United States was split, many of the country's fundamental issues were disputed, with slavery being at the top of the list. Some of the other major issues in dispute were representation, tariffs, and states' rights. Sectionalism is defined as, the sharp socio-economic differences that divided the Northern and the Southern states in the U.S.
After the Mexican-American war, as the United States slipped into an antebellum period following the acquisition of California through the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, manifest destiny once again consumed the minds of numerous Americans. When, in 1849, gold was discovered near Sutter's Mill in California numerous "forty-niners" overcome with "gold fever" quickly rushed to California hoping to strike it rich. The California gold rush attracted tens of thousands of people which quickly overloaded the feeble territorial government with miscreants, thus creating a dire need for the swift establishment of an effective governmental system to replace the current system of vigilante justice. California soon applied for statehood as a free soil state and the issue of slavery once again surfaced in the forefront of political debate. The country was faced with a dilemma; should the state be admitted as a free soil state the south would be forced to forfeit their senatorial equilibrium, however allowing the state to have slaves would evoke the wrath of the radical abolitionists in New England. Sectionalism rapidly convulsed the nation as the south bonded together more tightly in defense of slavery, New England turned evermore to radical abolition, and the west remained attached to traditional democratic principles. The debates following the Mexican-American war greatly mirrored the perpetually increasing sectional divide between New Englanders, Westerners, and Southerners due primarily to popular sovereignty, extremists on both sides of the slavery issue, and controversial legislation and provisions.
In Donald Robinson’s, Slavery in the Structure of the American Revolution, he eloquently articulates the original purpose of separation of power in the United States of America: to protect private interests and freedom. Considering that separation of power is viewed as a means to prevent a unitary and centralized government, the issue of slavery influenced the adoption of separation of power. While equality is a quintessential reflection of America, the power of states’ rights prevents states from being consistent with American values. In this paper, I will examine the principle concept of separation of power in the context of ensuring private interests, in particular, the institution of slavery and segregation. I will argue how decentralized political power fundamentally prevents unity within a nation because of its intent to protect the private interests in the United States of America.
The Beginnings of the Sectional Crisis During the antebellum period, the North and the South were complete opposites. This led to each side viewing itself as superior and viewing the other as "backward." Each side believed itself to be superior, in all aspects, to the other. The reasons for these opinions can be found in the different economic, social, and cultural systems found in these two regions. The Southern economy was primarily agricultural.
In discussing the problems surrounding the issue of factionalism in American society, James Madison concluded in Federalist #10, "The inference to which we are brought is that the causes of cannot be removed and that relief is only to be sought in the means of controlling its effects." (Federalist Papers 1999, 75) In many ways, the nature of American politics has revolved around this question since our country's birth. What is the relationship between parties and government? Should the party serve as an intermediary between the populace and government, and how should a government respond to disparate ideas espoused by the factions inherent to a free society. This paper will discuss the political evolution that has revolved around this question, examining different "regimes" and how they attempted to reconcile the relationship between power and the corresponding role of the people. Beginning with the Federalists themselves, we will trace this evolution until we reach the contemporary period, where we find a political climate described as "interest-group liberalism." Eventually this paper will seek to determine which has been the most beneficial, and which is ultimately preferable.
According to Donald Trump’s website his only foreign policy listed is immigration reform. His site states “A nation without borders is not a nation.” This is likely referring to the wall he has proposed building
Donald Trump has been a bad influence to the United States that doesn’t deserve to be president. The entire thing he has done during his running doesn’t show that is able to be president. Trump is an arrogant person that doesn’t deserve to be president and doesn’t deserve to be able to run a country; he is acting like a child he is not mature to run for
Sectional crisis between North and South hinge on multitude of issues pertaining to slavery. The issues show that the federal government had been compromising with slavery to unite the nation.
Donald Trump is a successful businessman who has accomplished more than most people could ever dream of. He started in the real estate business and has his own university, appeared on a T.V. show, is a billionaire, has many golf resorts, and is the president of the United States. He is criticized for many of his comments and political views. Some of these views are him wanting to build a wall to protect the United States from illegal immigrants and drugs, wanting to replace The Affordable Care Act, and banning people from Muslim countries to keep out terrorists. Although Donald Trump is often viewed as a controversial figure, he benefitted the United States of America by improving and creating jobs, proving that non-establishment politicians can still win the presidency, and by making America safer.
He is going to reform the national debt problems with many different resources. Hopefully, he is going to raise taxes for the richer and leave the taxes in a moderate area for the working class. He is going to crack down big time on illegal immigration. He is going to make the processes to buy guns more thorough and make sure to focus on mental illness more, which he believes is the reason to the mass shooting and school killings, not the guns. I believe that his main voter group will be working white males, because of his views of reformation. He isn’t going to raise their taxes, they will be allowed to keep their guns, and he is promising to make illegal immigration ceases. All of these issues are targeted to working white men, which 77% of America is Caucasian and 49.2% of the population is male. If Donald trump sticks to what he has said when he is elected president, I believe he may actually make America great
As president is it very important that you be able to connect with a group of people and be compassionate about something or someone other than yourself. Trump is known to be racist and is especially against immigration from other countries. When you are arrogant and overlook global issues and certain groups of people, problems start to arise and this could be a potential harm if we elect Trump because of his constant need to bash other religions and ethnicities. Foreign relations would be completely ruined because of his open disrespect and uncaring opinions for any country other than the United States. He has not been shy to express his opinions about immigration, gender, and culture. Donald has also been known for his questionable, crude and derogatory comments and insults against woman, minorities and the lower class that led some to ask if this is really the man that should be the head of the office for the next four
His first plan for border security was to build a wall. In most of his speeches all you would have to hear is “build a wall” and you knew what he was speaking of. He wanted to build this wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, would this be cheap? No, and he expected Mexico to pay five billion to 10 billion to build this wall. When it came to his plans for deportations, it was to deport all of the undocumented immigrants, (which was about eleven million immigrants). Not only did he want to deport all eleven million, he wanted to penalize those who stayed longer than their visa departure date. He wants to have more immigration and custom enforcement officers, triple to be exact. He also wants to require that immigration and customs enforcement to go with local police officers to gang raids. His plans for the detentions were “no more catch and release” which means he wants immigrants who are caught illegally crossing the border to be detained and deported. He also had plans for the visa’s and work permits, his plans included to raise wages paid to H-1B (“a non-immigrant visa that allows U.S. employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty occupations”)- he wanted to do this so employers are motivated to offer jobs to unemployed Americans, the visa’s including the H-1B requires that employers look to hire American’s first, also to certify that immigrants who come to the U.S. are able to afford their own
