There were many problems, events, and situations that led to the Civil War. One of the major reasons for the outbreak of the war was sectionalism. Once the United States was split, many of the country's fundamental issues were disputed, with slavery being at the top of the list. Some of the other major issues in dispute were representation, tariffs, and states' rights. Sectionalism is defined as, the sharp socio-economic differences that divided the Northern and the Southern states in the U.S. The most important difference between the north and south was the issue of slavery. The South was primarily agricultural, and the southern economy was based upon the existence of large family farms known as plantations. The plantation economy relied on cheap labor in the form of slaves to produce tobacco and cotton. Farmers on the plantation did not do the work themselves; they needed slaves in order to make the largest amount of money possible. The North, however, was primarily industrial in nature. The North believed that all men should be able to work and support themselves and their families, regardless of color. They also felt that if a man were happy doing his job, then he would be more productive. Therefore, both he and the business would make more money. Slavery was abolished in the North when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. This proclamation upset the southern states and they decided to sever their ties with the rest of the country. In the textbook it says, "Northerners saw the South as a slave power, determined to foist the slave system on free labor throughout the land. Southerners saw the North as full of black republicanism, determined to destroy their way of life" ... ... middle of paper ... ...ld be stipulations. Hayes had to call all troops out of the South and send them west to fight the Indians. He was also required to give federal aid to finance railroad production. One final thing he did was appoint a Confederate general to his cabinet. This was one more step towards positive change in our country. Sectionalism, slavery and other issues leading up to the Civil War were some of the most disturbing aspects of our history. The years during the Reconstructive Period were also volatile and often violent. However, these were all critical and contributed to the growth and development of today's United States; the strongest and most democratic country in the world.
The economies of each region (North and South) at the time where really only similar in the way they were expanding and growing stronger. One way the two regions differed in economics was in the base of the economy. For example, the South’s economy was based on cotton farming, while the North’s economy was based on manufacturing. Because the South did not manufacture goods, they were forced to purchase finished products from the North- thus adding to the North’s economy. With the South’s money they would acquire cotton from the southern states. Also, in the South, there were little job opportunities for whites since slaves had the jobs in the field, unlike the North where jobs were abundant in factories for the unskilled workers. Many...
Slavery was merely one of the causes of the Civil War. Some historians argue that the political difference between the North and the South is a more influential cause of the Civil War while some insist that economic is the main cause. In fact, the political division between the North and the South was affected by the differences in the economic system of both. The North and the South had had different economic backgrounds that were established since the American colonial period. These economic differences from the colonial period brought about the political division that was based on preserving each other’s own wealth or property and eventually caused the Civil War.
The American Civil War was caused by an explosion of conflictions, provoked by regional and sectional differences and an unfortunate sequence of political events. As explained earlier, the central theme of almost all of the events that brought about the Civil War was related to slavery. The Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Dred Scott Case, and the Election of 1860 were three events that played very instrumental roles in causing the Civil War, however each could have been handled differently by the parties involved. The approaches of the parties could have been more subtle, using compromises to settle disputes, in order to avoid a war.
The majority of speculations regarding the causes of the American Civil War are in some relation to slavery. While slavery was a factor in the disagreements that led to the Civil War, it was not the solitary or primary cause. There were three other, larger causes that contributed more directly to the beginning of the secession of the southern states and, eventually, the start of the war. Those three causes included economic and social divergence amongst the North and South, state versus national rights, and the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Dred Scott case. Each of these causes involved slavery in some way, but were not exclusively based upon slavery.
The Northern economy was based on many different industries, such as shipping, textiles, lumber, fur and mining. (Mr. Kash). Most people in the north lived on small farms to raise livestock and food to eat. Manufacturing quickly developed with water power and coal from steam plants. The north favored high tariffs to protect its industries from foreign competition. The Southern economy focused on agriculture so towns and cities slowly grew and took form. Cash Crops such as cotton, indigo, tobacco, rice and sugarcane were grown on plantations. The invention of the cotton gin allowed cotton to take over southern economy. The cotton industry developed rapidly and spread all over the south. This industry was so big that cotton exports made ⅔’s american exports. ( Civil War Trust). Slavery was essential for prosperity of southern economy. The south had little manufacturing and hated high tariffs because high tariffs would make overseas buyers not want to buy their stuff and make them increase their tariffs making it more expensive for the south to
Between the economic, political, and social quarrels that evolved throughout the 1850's, the North and the South underwent many changes that led to the start of the Civil War. The most attributing factor to this war was that of a moral dispute between two sections who both wanted different things. Slavery became the issue that spread across the nation and was disputed back and forth between the North and South sections of the country.
The North and the South’s economies were made up of different aspects, which didn’t leave much room for agreement on how they were run or policies. The North was faced with harsher climates and poor soil conditions which forced them to create an economy that didn’t rely on agriculture as did the souths. The North was an urban society which contained manufactures, small businesses, capitalists and banking. This type of economy pushed society to be one of progress and innovation. The
The major difference between the north and the south was that the North had larger factories and relied on immigrants, while on the other hand the South had more farms and relied on slave labor. The north had lots of factories that were steam powered instead of water powered. The factories were located near railroads, they were very dirty and dangerous towards the workers. In the summer the factories where extremely hot and in the winners it was extremely cold, and there was very poor ventilation.
Throughout the United States turbulent history there has not been a worse conflict than the civil war. The issues that drove the country apart go back as far as the birth of the nation itself. During the years immediately prior to the outbreak of war numerous events set off a domino effect that eventually lead to the cessation of what was to become the Confederacy. Some of the most noteworthy events include the Compromise of 1850, The Fugitive Slave Act, Bleeding Kansas, and Brooks-Sumner affair.
When it comes to the economy, there are many differences in agriculture, industry, and source of labor. The North was not known for their agriculture. The North had small farms and plantations. Not many people were farmers. In the North you could find a lot of towns and cities. The South was primarily agricultural. Not many cities were located in the South. Large plantations and farms would be found in the South. Almost all of the business there involved agriculture. The North and the South were very different, especially when it comes to industry. The North had many factories, railroads, and capital investments. Unlike the South, they did not have much agriculture. The South had very few railroads and factories. The South
The Civil War is a war that divides our nation slavery is one of the most believed reasons for the start of the war truth is there were many conflicts leading over many issues between the North and South. One of the biggest reasons was the Issues included States’ Rights and disagreements over tariffs.
The social differences between the north and the south were huge and caused a lot of conflict. One of the main parts of the social differences was the view on slavery. Slavery was more popular in the South and enslaved african americans lived in rural areas working on small farms and plantations doing a variety of jobs. (Deverell + White 386) While in the north did not
Slavery, in particular, was one of the biggest issues leading up to the Civil War. While the South’s agrarian economy was dependent on slave labor, the majority of Northerners opposed it on both moral and political grounds. Their strong opinions on the matter meant that it was unlikely that they would reach any compromise that would satisfy both sides. Another important factor
In American History we are currently studying the concept of sectionalism. Sectionalism is division within a country based on regional beliefs and interests. In the early mid 1800’s, sectionalism in America grew as slavery divided the nation. Slavery was ignored, compromised and argued about by the states until the conflict drove our country into the Civil War. Although regional differences are not as distinct these days, many issues are currently causing division among the states and people of our country. These issues lead to what our history class describes as “modern sectionalism.” One such issue is Donald Trump’s ideas.
The American Civil War was a war fought within the United States of America between the North, later known as the Union, and the South later known as the Confederacy, starting from 1861 and ending in 1865. This war is seen as one of the most devastating events in American history, costing more than 600,000 lives. From the Southern point of view, this war was a ‘War of Rebellion’, or a ‘War for Southern Independence’. From the Northern point of view this war was seen as a revolution. This war started as a result of many years of disagreements and conflict building up amid the two regions. Between the North and the South there lay deep economic, social and political differences, but it is important to understand that slavery was the root of cause
