Introduction Conflict of interest generally describes an individual with a vested interest that harms the execution of its official duty as an employee, as a professional or as a public official (McDonald, n.d.). Personal interest can be financial or non-financial driven. It is also possible that an individual might be unaware of what appears to be a goodwill act can be perceived as a conflict of interest. Hence, conflict of interest must not be taken lightly. Furthermore, conflict of interest does not necessarily mean only in actuality but also those situations that are reasonably perceived or with potential. Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross after becoming involved in the work of the International Red Cross during the Franco-Prussian War. Her heart of giving and helping others convinced her that an American chapter was needed in her country in 1881. The ARC is a humanitarian organization that is dependent on the contributions of time, blood, and money from the American public to support its multiple lifesaving services and programs. The ARC’s mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The ARC from its humble beginnings and up to recently has provided great support the American public and military during times of need. However, recently the organization has drifted from is stakeholders and gone through difficult challenges. Instead of the focus being on the disaster victims, the American public and government has been on the mismanagement of the organization. The media and general public have been critical of their slow response to disasters, their inability to wisely manage donated funds and blood, its poor planning and communications with disaster victims and other agencies during relief efforts. This paper is based on the case study of the American Red Cross and will discuss the impact of the events from the case study on ARC’s “benefits of business ethics”, discuss the role that ARC’s stakeholder orientation played in this scenario, discuss the ways in which ARC’s corporate governance failed to provide formalized responsibility to their stakeholders, and recommend steps that ARC could follow to improve their stakeholders perspective.
Let’s start with the core reason for this case study. Valerie Young was a marketing manager for the Wisson Corporation when one day she went to make some photocopies. While attempting to make copies she discovered a paper jam and proceeded to clear it. She came across a document that looked similar to her boss’s personal letterhead. Upon further investigation, she noticed that the document revealed evidence that her boss Lionel Waters was receiving $35.000 per month threw his consulting company he had on the side. I see this is a conflict of interest within the company. The Wisson company policy does not specifically address that an employee cannot have his personal consulting company while working within their company. Valerie stated during this case study that in the past year leading up to this event the Wisson Company worked with eight companies to deliver 300 to 400 perfume samples. Once Lionel Waters took over they only worked with two companies and Valerie and her colleagues soon found out that Mr. Waters’ was not to be questioned on his decisions. I can only assume from the case study that Mr. Waters displayed the use of legitimate power due to his position within the company. The first English settlement in Australia was established in 1788. Before this the Aborigines lived in the land in harmony. However, after the English arrived, the two different cultures were in close contact and had to determine how to coexist. White Europeans did not respect the Aborigines’ right to the land and it’s resources. With brutal force, they took control of the land and claimed it as their own. Australians then developed their own policies on how to deal with the Aborigines, which, as you can expect, bettered their own way of life. There are three historical phases of Australian governmental policies: dispossession, segregation, and assimilation. There are also some recent policies that have acknowledged Aboriginal rights and have increased their autonomy and welfare. This paper will discuss these phases, their effects on the Aborigines and Australia, and the future of Australian race relations.
Ethical behavior is behavior that a person considers to be appropriate. A person’s moral principals are shaped from birth, and developed overtime throughout the person’s life. There are many factors that can influence what a person believes whats is right, or what is wrong. Some factors are a person’s family, religious beliefs, culture, and experiences.
