In school we all have our favorite teachers. The ones we connected with a just loved. In college, we’re there to get a degree. The type of teachers there can make one thing that the school is just about the money. There some professors with teaching styles that put some students at a disadvantage. We all know the difficult teachers, but a lot of them you learn so much. It’s the teachers you just don’t want to have at all because you learn nothing. Why is that? It’s all about the teaching style of the professor. Should consultants be used to tell the professors what they are doing wrong and how they can improve? I think so, but students shouldn’t be the consultant as Gail Oremaland states in his essay, “The Truth about College Teachers.”
I firmly believe that college is business. It’s like getting your first job and without pay. Well, I have to take that back you can get loans and for some they’re able to receive grants. The school number one job isn’t to educate but to make as money as possible. Why do you think schools recruit sport athletes? It’s all about the money. If sports didn’t make a dime school would still recruit some, but not near the form they’re doing now. That’s the reason why we have the teachers we have in college. It’s all about the money, not about getting the best teachers. Teachers aren’t recruited anything like athletes are and we’re able to pay teachers. The reason why schools don’t have to do this is because the students are coming, so the money is coming. With sports when you team starts playing awful, the TV money and other forms of money depreciates in times.

The goal is to get students to care. Caring about the subject helps you learn material better. Students would learn material that helps them solve problems in their discipline or everyday life. If the material isn’t relevant to them, it has little chance of being learned. Motivation isn’t necessarily entertaining the student; it is crafting classroom activities and assignments that force the student to problem-solve.
With better teachers, teachers that cares comes a better results you get out of students. Students are in college to learn and to ultimately get a degree. Having good teachers along the way will have them to achieve their goals and remember the things they learned along the way as well.

Sports provide a nice source of money for the college but some of the money is given to the coaches where coaches are given much more money than professors that do make an effort to teach students. The money can be potentially be used to promote more departments and of the like, but to see that coaches get paid more than professors, it makes a statement of how sports are more important than education. Colleges are made to educate students and ensure that education are the highest quality valued, but to have professors who are the basis of education being paid less than coaches. It is no secret that college has absurd tuition prices. If colleges were to lower the prices of tuition, everyone would be universally happier. Brooks uses the following quote to address the obvious “it is the outrageous sticker price of a college education, and its steep upward climb in seeming defiance of the rest of the economy, that has fueled a demand to know why American families should sacrifice so much to a possibly dubious product.” (Brooks 59). Although I agree that college may be too inflated compared to off campus, I came to the realization that the price of college is mostly worth it. Umass Amherst has the best Sports Management program and is worth the money because they have the largest alumni in this field. They have alumni in all the major sports leagues in America and even in the other continents. They have a strong connection to Umass and tend to hire other Umass Amherst graduates from the McCormack Department of Sport Management. Brooks believes that instrumental learning, teaching students to pass the course, rather to understand the central questions of humanity hinders the value of college (Brooks 65). College athletes are undoubtedly some of the hardest working people in the world. Not only are they living the life of an average student, they also have a strenuous schedule with their specific sport. One of the most discussed topics in the world of college athletics is whether or not student-athletes should be paid money for playing sports. The people who disagree with the idea have some good arguments to make. Primarily that the athletes get to go to school for free for playing sports. Another argument is that if student-athletes were to get paid then it would ruin the amateurism of college sports. People who are against paying the athletes do not want to see the young people become focused on money. “Paying student-athletes would dramatically shift their focus away from where it should be - gaining knowledge and skills for life after college” (Lewis and Williams). This is very understandable because one of the biggest reasons college sports are so popular is because the athletes play for school pride and for bragging rights. At most Universities around the country the bulk of the income the school receives is brought in through the athletic programs. In fact the football and basketball teams usually bring in enough money to completely pay for the rest of the athletic programs all together. To get a better understanding of how much has changed in the world of college sports a little history must be learned.
College sports are a major revenue producing industry. Athletic programs and their student-athletes can achieve national recognition and generate millions of dollars in revenue for their university. Colleges use this revenue to invest in players, pay for their education, and provide state of the art training facilities, which are used to improve their athletic performance. As revenue driven colleges begin to prioritize athletics, the emphasis on the quality and standards of an undergraduate education are diminishing. Compromising their academic acceptance requirements, universities have now found that the educational ability of their newly accepted student athletes are inadequate, to say the least (Gurney). I believe that college sports should be considered a profession. Athletes deserve to be paid for their work. College athletics are a critical part of America’s culture and economy. At the present time, student-athletes are considered amateurs. College is a stepping-stone to the professional leagues. The NCAA is exploiting the student- athlete. Edmundson states, "professors don't pay full-bore attention to teaching, they don't have to work very hard-they've created a massive feather bed for themselves and called it a university" (Edmundson 408). I think by this, Edmundson means that professors feel like once their job is secure at their institute, they do not truly focus on the essential purpose of their job; to educate others. This is one problem that I have faced personally and another reason why I relate to this article. In the beginning of my first semester, I took a course where the professor would show up, lecture for the full duration, then dismiss us. The problem with this is that professors do not engage with their students, they lecture about the information but do not help us to understand the information that they are telling us. As Edmundson further explains, these types of professors are not ambitious, they secure their job at a university and feel as if they do not have to fully apply their teaching ability, just assign the coursework on the syllabus and expect the students to get it done. When I first read the title of the article “The Problem with Lecturing” I was immediately drawn to the subject at hand. Being a student who has struggled in the past with the teaching method of lecture classes, I was curious as of what aspect Emily Hanford was going to write about. I was curious to see what appeal she would use to make her point. Would she use ethos, logos, pathos or a combination of all three? And at what point would her kairos moments appear. To my delight, Emily touched base on may different aspect of the problem with lecturing including, but not limited to, testing understanding once lectured (ethos), professors taking the matter to heart of its lack of effectiveness (pathos) , and the importance of professors changing the way they teach/lecture in a classroom setting(logos). Hanford also remarked that Professors have long been aware of the problem with lecturing student, but most are not sure of how to make the needed change. While others feel there is no need make changes to what is, as they believe is “working well”. This last statement however was not clear as what she was trying to convey in her article, which may leave the readers confused of what her actual point is. For example is she looking for a change or is she just expressing an issue that exists.

Covington focuses their argument on academic motivation of student athletes and what drives them to want to succeed in the classroom as well as on the court or field. In order for students to be objective thinkers they must be given instruction to obtain the knowledge needed. All core areas of learning are equally important in building an objective individual that has can function well in society; such as science, math, reading, writing and humanities.
