School Violence As a responsible adult would you ever knowingly send a child into a dangerous situation? The majority of adults would say of course not, but unfortunately this is exactly what happens up to five days a week through much of the school year. Sadly, many school aged children are subjected to violence at school on a daily basis. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention, reports that, “School violence is youth violence that occurs on school property, on the way to or from school or during school-sponsored events (Youth Violence).” Students may be physically abused or emotionally humiliated at the very place that adults send them to thrive and grow. Students who tend to be violent towards others may be exhibiting behavior that they have witnessed in other places such as; their home, on television or video games. In many homes across America the family unit has fallen apart. Parents no longer take an interest in what their children are doing. There is no monitoring of improper behavior or activities. This often leaves children watching programs or playing games that are chalked full of violence. They may feel alone or rejected by their family and/or friends, therefore enjoy inflicting pain on others in order to feel empowered. Then there are the youth addicted to the violent programs and games who may themselves be victims of bullying, they can gain a false sense of confidence and power and use the violence they see as a way to retaliate against those who have harmed them. So as you can see the problem with bullying cannot be disregarded especially since it accounts for seventy-seven percent of school violence (Neuman). The fact is that school violence will remain as long as bullies continue inflicting violence upon others, which in turn cause those who are bullied to lash back with their own violence. This is a vicious cycle that must be stopped in order for adults to feel safe about sending children to school where they should be allowed to receive the best education possible and live without being fearful of what the day has in
