Does suspension really help the student understand what they did wrong?
Does school suspension really teach the student their mistakes? Would it be better to understand why the student did what they did? Shouldn’t teachers know the students’ side of the story? School suspension in schools has always been a go to when giving out a students punishment for bad behavior. Schools always lean towards suspension because it is an easy way to deal with the student. Consequently, school suspension is just like a vacation to the student. Although the student would have homework, the student would still get time off from school. But, nevertheless school suspension doesn't have much effect on the kids. Although school suspension is how the school deals with students bad behavior, schools should choose a different alternative to dealing with bad behavior because school suspension doesn’t teach

School suspension only tells the student that they get off of school for a few days and that the student has homework to complete. School suspension doesn’t explain to the student where that student might have gone wrong. Schools need to know that punishing the student isn’t always the way to go. The student might want to explain the reason for their actions. Schools need to find different alternatives to suspension so that teachers and students can have a better understanding with one and other. Schools should get rid of suspension and find a better alternative that way the teachers and students could talk things out and so the student understands what not to do next
For my interview portion of this response I interviewed a friend of mine named Nicole who is a bisexual. When I asked her about her fears of coming out her she said that her only fear was being seen as some kind of pervert or sexual predator.” I came out to my friends first, some were shocked but soon it just became something that people just knew and after awhile it became just as relevant as my hair color”. She also stated that after she came out to her friends some of those friends came out to her soon after. She admitted she was treated differently by people because of the discrimination bisexuals get by both hetrosexuals and homosexuals.“People tolerate bisexuals but they are not respected” She said that many people treated her as if she was confused or like she was only pretending to like girls because they believe that would attract men. She explained that most people tend to believe that bisexuality doesn’t exist.
The article "Let`s Really Reform Our Schools" by Anita Garland discuss the trouble faced by American High Schools. According to her, students are more concerned about their looks than learning, and this results in poor academic performance. She states that there is a need for American High Schools to be completely restructured. The worst students must be kicked out of the schools because they are troublemakers, and they distract others, which includes their fellow students, teachers, and administrators. Troublemakers lack fear of suspension from school, and suspension from school doesn’t improve their behavior. Troublemakers do not care about punishments at all. After all, they don’t want to be in the school, and they are not learning anything
A new policy is needed and most certainly should start out with holding schools to handle their own discipline situations, rather than relying on school security and police (Wilson, 2014). School administrators must be able to differentiate between what is a true discipline situation and when a student simply made a mistake. The rate of school suspensions have skyrocketed over the last thirty years from 1.7 million nationwide to 3.1 million and growing today (ACLU, n.d.). Each school needs to create policies of when to get school security involved and what the school’s security job involves. If you did not know, the zero tolerance policy is when students break school behavior rules and strict regulations created by the district or school and get severe consequences for it. Carla Amurao, the author of the article, “Fact Sheet: How Bad Is the School-to-Prison Pipeline?”, stated that “statistics reflect that these policies disproportionately target students of color”. Students of color are being affected so badly by this policy, that statistics show black students are 3 times more likely to get expelled than white students. Since these students are being expelled or arrested for breaking zero tolerance policy rules, they are missing valuable information in classes due to court hearings. But, some people argue that the zero tolerance policy is unfair to all students, making the education system equal for all to succeed. For example, a “2007 study by the Advancement Project and the Power U Center for Social Change says that for every 100 students who were suspended, 15 were Black, 7.9 were American Indian, 6.8 were Latino and 4.8 were white”. As you can see, the zero tolerance policy affects all races, making them miss their education because of certain consequences. ... my opinion it is just a way it’s just a temporary act which does not last. Youth need to interact with peers, help in the decision making process, sense of belonging, and develop a value system. If we kick them out of school we are not helping them become respectful citizens in the community.
Now its been 2 months since my suspension and I’m back now from my punishment. Tardiest have been the worst rule at Merced High School. I still think that the tardy policy is a ridicules rules there are. There is no way that someone is going to be on he or she’s desk when the bell rings, I’m saying this from experience. Students’ rights in schools are limited or just taken away. Kids are forced to do whatever the officials at their school, either the principal or the teachers, tell the students to do. One of the main right that gets taken away or limited is students’ first amendment rights, which is the freedom of expression. Students can gets suspended by just doing things the staff at the school does not like, including saying things that they don 't like or supporting a religion that the school does not support. Also, if something is said about the school or the people attending the school is said on social media that student can also get in a lot of trouble. Students should be able to have more first amendment
Suspended children are missing out on valuable school time. These children often miss out on important exams and assignments. “Many of these children are missing out on the education their schools are providing, and they are learning far worse lessons away from those schools” (Henault 548).
I can guarantee that punishment is not the answer. Punishment is a suggestion made by reformers (Postman, 311), but it is the absolute worst decision that can be made in our schools. When students get out of school suspension (OSS), they treat it as a vacation day and most of them use it to play video games, and they still get to make up the work they missed. A countless amount of kids in my high school did exactly that. On another side of that, punishment is giving a student attention. Not a great kind of attention, but attention nonetheless. Several students today receive in-school suspension and out-of-school suspensions that remove them from the classroom environment. While some teachers argue that this helps maintain the equilibrium of a learning environment, the academics of those students must also be taken into consideration when discussing the effectiveness of these methods. A study done by the Minnesota Department of Education shows that, “suspension is associated with a host of negative student outcomes, including diminished academic achievement and dropout. Suspension diminishes academic achievement in part because of missed instructional time” (5). When I missed three weeks of school during my sophomore year due to the flu, I struggled to catch up with all my subjects and to raise my grades. I was not under disciplinary actions, but because I was removed from the academic scene, my academic achievements diminished and I struggled to catch up to my peers. If students who are under disciplinary actions are unable to class, then how will they learn? It is all too easy to remove a student causing a disturbance and forget about them, but that student also deserves an education. I do not believe is right to suspend a student based on race and just because the student acts out is not because they are future criminals. A student usually acts out because they lack attention at home and are seeking attention from an adult. I believe is better to help the child early in age instead later in their life when they start hanging out with the wrong crowd. Another type of student who will act out in a classroom setting would be a student with disabilities because they feel so out of place. As educators we can change the outcome of a student success in their education. The first thing to do would be to stop stereotyping a student by their race. A student success in a classroom setting should not be determine by their race. If a student acts out we should discipline the child the correct way by having small punishments. Suspending the child would only put them behind and they would not learn anything from it. Having the child stay after class and help those with their homework would feel more of a punishment than staying at home. There are many issues that stem from treating youth similarly to adults in the criminal justice system. It leads to the criminalization of children which could have a negative impact on the rest of their lives. For example, students that are expelled or suspended from school may have difficulties in returning to school or staying in school once they do return. This can be due to the fact that they have become behind in their school work, or they feel ostracized by their peers and as such drop out. This presents a huge issue for society because students that drop out are less capable of finding suitable employment and are thus more likely to turn to lives of crime to make ends meet (Findlay, 2008). School should be a time to make mistakes in a safe environment that they can learn from, not a place that they are petrified to make a mistake for fear of retribution on their grade cards. Its time to change the school system to save future students from becoming stress crazed and to let them know that there is more to this world than a grade card and in the long run it is a very small fraction of life.
