Experiencing a school shooting can be one of the most traumatizing moments of an individual's life. In the article “No, there haven’t been 18 school shootings in 2018. The number is flat wrong.” by John Woodrow Cox and Steven Rich, they discuss what a school shooting is and how most of the “18 school shootings” shouldn’t be considered real school shootings. The article “Here’s How to Prevent the Next School Shooting, Experts Say” by Anya Kamenetz, discusses options on how to prevent devastating situations. Both these articles discuss the impact it has on society but what would be a well-based opinion on these articles? First, what causes a young adult to cause harm to their fellow classmates? Relationships in and out of school can contribute
In the article “Gun Control Can Prevent School Shootings,” Bennett shares the effects of gun violence in the past, present, and future. The Sandy Hook shooting occurred on December 14, 2012 when twenty children and six adult staff members were killed. Barely a month after the shooting, eleven of the families affected by the shooting went to meet privately with Joe Biden, and members from the Congress and cabinet. Bennett stated, “They were preparing to wade into some of the roughest waters in American politics: the gun debate.” President Obama gave a speech in Connecticut vowing to fight for change. And as Bennett put it, “Members of Congress started acting as parents instead of politicians.” Bennett explained to the families that they couldn't get rid of assault weapons or high capacity ammunition magazines, no matter how bad the shooting was. The families got angry and stated they did not want to know what they couldn't do, but what they could do to honor their children.
Second I am going to discuss the differences between the two articles. These two articles have a variety of differences. The main difference is how they are going to prevent another shooting. The NRA focuses more on a program called National School Shield Emergency Program. This program focuses getting a trained security officer put in every school to help protect the children. The NRA said that this program will be free to make sure that every school as the chance to get this program. Compared to the NRA, the other article comes up with a variety of ideas to help out with the protection of children. Most of these ideas revolve improving permitting standards. Making them more strict so individuals have to renew them every couple of years. It also talks about going threw safety and fire training requ...
This was a very informative article. I was unaware of all the deaths in result of gun violence. I didn’t realize that people who worked for the government or who was in congress were often targets. In order to fully get rid of gun violence in schools, each and every school should have metal detectors that can detect weapons and always have security guards on duty. By doing this, parents are more comfortable with sending their students off to school. Taking this step in every school around the world would definitely cost lots of money but it will honestly be worth it. After all the school shooting we’ve heard about, we’d definitely be saving plenty of lives just in case an incident does happen. I went to highschool in a rough neighborhood and
The history of school shootings has shown an increase in mass school shooting. The very first known school shooting in the United States occurred on July 26, 1764 in present-day Greencastle, Pennsylvania. As part of the Pontiac's Rebellion, four Lenape Native Americans entered the school house and started shooting, killing the schoolmaster Enoch Brown and about nine students. Only two students survived the massacre (“History”). Since the 1700s the United States society has changed in many ways. Schools have become more than just one room school houses and each grade has its own teacher. Furthermore, the problem of school shootings has not decreased but rather increased over the years. On the one hand, reports from the Centers for Disease Control showed that in general school violence decreased from 1992 to 200...
School shootings seemed like a new phenomenon, but they occurred for the majority of American history. The first school shooting occurred On July 26, 1764, when a Lenape Indian shot and killed nine children and the school master of the Greencastle, Pennsylvania school (Galvin): as noted in Appendix A. Since 1764, the number of school shootings rose exponentially. In the 1990’s, eighty-six school shootings occurred and between 2000 and 2014, 110 shootings transpired since 2000 (Killam,2008). The development of semiautomatic weapons lead to an increase in deaths. A study conducted in 1990 found through the years of 1986 to 1990; 71 people died, 201 wounded, and 242 people held hostage by school shooters(Galvin). While the area a school serves as one factor in the number of violent acts committed per year, school shootings have not been connected to this. The schools in Chicago dealt with more violent acts, but Sandy Hook Elementary, a small city school had relatively few violent acts committed by students.
Both the given articles have different perspective of the way we see our world today. Evidence is shown in the article,”Famous Speeches: "We call BS," Emma Gonzalez's speech to gun advocates” paragraph 6, line 2,”And in this case, if you actively do nothing, people continually end up dead, so it's time to start doing something.” This statement explains that our government have these debates on what should happen to address the situation and why they are debating more mass shooting are happening and none is fixing this situation. An evidence is shown in the passage, “Issue Overview: Guns in America” paragraph 1, line 1, “Every mass shooting in the United States starts a new debate over the right to own guns. Americans own more guns than anybody else on Earth.”This textual evidence shows that the U.S. is arguing over what to do and how to do it, but more they argue and not figure out a solution the more people are going to buy guns and more people are killed. Also, the article, ”Famous Speeches: "We call BS," Emma Gonzalez's speech to gun advocates” paragraph 7, line 6,”The students who are dead, the students still in the hospital, the student now suffering post-traumatic stress disorder, the students who had panic attacks during our vigil to mourn our classmates because the helicopters would not leave us alone, hovering over the school for 24 hours a day.” This
Family environment and the press are two major influences resulting in the recent tragic school shootings. As much as society continues to focus the killing rampages on factors such as television and music, what children are exposed to in reality contributes to the violence. The most recent school shooting in Michigan involved a six-year-old first grader who killed a classmate with a .22 caliber pistol. The news coverage had vanished after two or three days, and I was left wondering what had happened. Considering the fact that the media wore the Columbine incident out, I wanted to know why they did not pay more attention to this school shooting. As evidence did arrive, it was discovered that the child lived in a household where cocaine, heroin, and many other illegal drugs were commonplace. Also in this “home” guns were easily accessible to the child. Children growing up in this type of environment certainly are likely to be held accountable for future violence. Even though I am against the news media presenting too much school violence, Americans should have been deeply disturbed by this shooting because of the child’s young age. The Michigan shooting should have enlightened Americans to the dilemma we face in this country. Two weeks after the Columbine High School shooting, information on the mass murder was still being broadcast on television. The press was feeding young viewers ideas on how to kill their classmates. News was reported how the teenage murderers acquired information regarding building bombs, obtaining guns, smuggling guns into the school, and proceeding to kill their classmates. A mentally unstable teenager could simply watch these news reports and write a book entitled, “How to Slay Your Classmates”. This onslaught was ridiculous and the news coverage should not have been permitted to continue for countless weeks. Society has determined three reasons on which to blame the shootings. First, the nation blamed it on television’s violent programs. Following that, Americans gave the music recording companies the evil eye as well as attacking the gun manufacturers. All of these reasons involve material objects that are unable to think for themselves. Televisions and CD players do not control themselves, people control them. Finally, boundaries controlling the television programs children view should be set by the parents. The same explanation applies to firearms. How can it be a gun’s fault that a person killed another human being?
From 1980’s till now, there are has been many school shootings. Many researchers have made many hypotheses as to why these occur. The most tragic shooting took place in Sandy Hook Elementary. 2. I believe that we should prevent shootings from happening in schools because schools are meant to be a safe education environment for students and faculty. There are many ways that school shootings can be prevented and the two most important ones are hiring more school security officers and having counselors help out troubled kids.
Young adults are not just creating this school violence, kids as young as twelve are committing acts as dangerous at their own school shootings. In Sparks Middle School in Nevada, twelve-year-old Jose Reyes had taken his parents hand gun with him to school. He had shot 2 children and killed a teacher that was also a war veteran. He then turned the gun on himself ("US School Violence Fast Facts." CNN). Many other incidents had occurred as early as 1927 to present day. Many of these shootings include the principal and certain classmates as the target. Simple disagreements between classmates can trigger a response that creates the such violence.

My subtopic was gun violence in schools “school shootings.” There have been many schools shooting and most of them had many innocent people dying because of one or two people who had committed these horrible crimes. There are many things that should be done to help innocent people from getting hurt and prevent this from happening again. One thing that should happen is to put guns away or just getting rid of them. People get guns many different ways as you may already know. Sometimes we would just want guns to vanish and everyone one to have peace in the world. Gun violence in schools occurs around the world not only in the United States. The news inform us about the many other countries that are attacked and children or students that have been killed because of terroirs groups. People aren’t safe now days in places that we should believe schools are safe. Many parents are nervous sending their children to school because of the different stories they hear about on the news and from others.
There are many different types of school violence. The one that gets the most public attention is school shootings. The term school shooting is basically defined as an act where a student, school staff member, or intruder from the outside commits an act on the school campus. One of the most well known school shootings took place at Columbine High School near Littleton, Colorado. On a Tuesday April 20,1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, students at Columbine High School, took the lives of thirteen other students before taking the lives of their own. When we think of events like this, we have many questions that go through our mind. Thoughts like why did this happen, could it have been prevented, and how did impact the individuals involved just to name a few. There are probably several more thoughts that go through the minds of a nation when we hear about traumatic evens such as a school shooting.
With the media shining so much light upon this topic, it is evident that mass murders in the United States of America are more frequent and deadly. In fact, studies have found that the USA has more mass public shootings than any other country (Christensen). These numbers have only been increasing in the past decades. This is shocking because the USA holds only 5 percent of the world’s population, but as a nation, contributes to 31 percent of mass murders (Christensen). Although these murders continue to be a rare phenomenon, weak gun laws, the need for fame, and issues with societal views are the main causes of the increase in cases.
We have the ability to stop tragic events before they have a chance to happen. By knowing the signs we can stop a school shooting before it takes its disastrous toll. People want to believe that a school shooter is always like the last person so no one bothers to look at the signs of one. We can often become susceptible to what we know: therefore, making us believe something that is not there. If we no longer focus on what the people will look like and instead focus on the signs they show, we can stop this before another tragic event happens.
My first memory of a school shooting was knowing about Sandy Hook Elementary School because of how shocking it was at that school. Of course it was when I went to 8 grade of middle school all we did was to prepare to protect us if one day we had a past a shooting at our school. I remember that I was very shocked of what had happened in that school, but the most horrible thing was listening to the stories of the poor mothers who had lost their children in the massacre. The only thing I thought if the sniper was alive or dead because of the confusion I had. My theory was that the murderer had a lot of problems due to the divorce of his parents, which showed that he received a lot of attention for them. What he did best according to him was to
