The pattern was not detected until after the shootings occurred on October 3. Fear quickly spread throughout the community as news of the shootings circulated. Many parents went to pick up their children at school early, not allowing them to take a school bus or walk home alone. Montgomery County and District of Columbia schools declared a lockdown, wit...

I am tired of living in total fear that my school, town, or any other public place will be the new breaking news of a shooting. No person right in the head will go around shooting up a school or anywhere else because they were angry at the people there. If we want to actually do something other than cry we need to know the first step in how these things happen. 1)person makes plan 2)person buys gun 3)peruses plan. We may no be able to stop a person thought process but we can sure as heck change how someone messed up enough to kill people to buy a gun. There is no reason for those type of people to be aloud to. How am I supposed to go to school and leave my house without thinking "wow, this could be it". Today I walked out of school to see police
This was a very informative article. I was unaware of all the deaths in result of gun violence. I didn’t realize that people who worked for the government or who was in congress were often targets. In order to fully get rid of gun violence in schools, each and every school should have metal detectors that can detect weapons and always have security guards on duty. By doing this, parents are more comfortable with sending their students off to school. Taking this step in every school around the world would definitely cost lots of money but it will honestly be worth it. After all the school shooting we’ve heard about, we’d definitely be saving plenty of lives just in case an incident does happen. I went to highschool in a rough neighborhood and
The history of school shootings has shown an increase in mass school shooting. The very first known school shooting in the United States occurred on July 26, 1764 in present-day Greencastle, Pennsylvania. As part of the Pontiac's Rebellion, four Lenape Native Americans entered the school house and started shooting, killing the schoolmaster Enoch Brown and about nine students. Only two students survived the massacre (“History”). Since the 1700s the United States society has changed in many ways. Schools have become more than just one room school houses and each grade has its own teacher. Furthermore, the problem of school shootings has not decreased but rather increased over the years. On the one hand, reports from the Centers for Disease Control showed that in general school violence decreased from 1992 to 200...
It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.
Although most security measures passively make schools safer, it is not nearly enough to prevent an individual who intends on creating mass violence from completing his or her task. State representatives, national organizations, school staff, and parents need to come together to figure out the most reliable ways to prevent an active shooter situation from occurring in their schools. One solution that has been active is many schools have partnered with local law enforcement agencies to provide a police officers to patrol school grounds....
There are many different types of school violence. The one that gets the most public attention is school shootings. The term school shooting is basically defined as an act where a student, school staff member, or intruder from the outside commits an act on the school campus. One of the most well known school shootings took place at Columbine High School near Littleton, Colorado. On a Tuesday April 20,1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, students at Columbine High School, took the lives of thirteen other students before taking the lives of their own. When we think of events like this, we have many questions that go through our mind. Thoughts like why did this happen, could it have been prevented, and how did impact the individuals involved just to name a few. There are probably several more thoughts that go through the minds of a nation when we hear about traumatic evens such as a school shooting.
Eighty-nine people die from gun violence in the United States every day according to the Brady Campaign , from school children to victims of domestic violence to people going about their daily lives. As we mourn the lives of those killed in incidents of gun violence across the country, we need to take action. We should all do everything in our power to keep tragedies like this from happening again. When it comes to addressing mass shootings, we need new answers

In Australia there has never been a school shooting. “A school shooting is a form of mass shooting involving a gun attack on an educational institution, such as a school or university”(Wikipedia). According to the United States Secret Service, a school shooting is where the school is purposely planned and selected as the location for the attack. A school shooting may occur between any individual, student, instructor, administrator and staff employed institution (Sinnamon, 2016). There is no one profile to describe a shooter but almost all attackers are students at the school. School shootings occur when anyone enters a campus and begins firing weapons such as a rifle, shotgun
Are we Americans even aware of how many school shootings have occurred in the U.S. alone? That number is 346. 346 school shootings have happened in the U.S. so my question is why are we not doing anything about it and why haven't we done anything about it. Teachers should be given guns with the adequate training because we could protect the students, have a safer environment for the students but the teacher could be opposed to teachers carrying guns.
In today’s society, gun control is currently a topic of debate in the United States. It seems as though almost every day the media is reporting the latest shooting or crime committed with a firearm. The acts of gun violence have reached far and wide, attacking even the places considered the safest, such as schools and churches. In the last 20 years, there have been numerous school shootings across the U.S., coupled with other serious acts of gun violence. These tragedies have greatly affected public opinion on gun control and interpretation of the Constitution’s Second Amendment. Recent school shootings, including those at Columbine High School in Colorado and Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, have caused some Americans to adopt a more liberal philosophy in regards to gun control, while some have upheld a more
Since the early 1700s school shootings have been a major issue in America. What exactly have we done to stop this from happening? Better yet, what can we all do to stop perpetrators from killing more innocent students? Something needs to be done! The one place were kids should feel safe has become one of the most dangerous places for them. The first school shooting I remember hearing about was at Columbine High School in Littleton Colorado in 1999, where 14 people were killed and 27 were wounded. About seven years later I met one of the survivors of the shooting, my English teacher, she was a freshman when it happened and hearing the story from her made me tear up. School shootings have happened at every level, from elementary school up to
There have been eight school shootings in just the first two months of 2018. Tell me, aren’t we supposed to feel safe at school, work, the mall, a concert.
