Imagine coming into school wearing what you believe is appropriate, but right when you arrive at school, they send you right back home because your outfit is not school appropriate. The clothing you have on is too revealing they say. This is because your school has a dress code and since you didn't follow it, the principal has to send you home to change into an appropriate outfit for school. This entire situation turns into a huge problem between your parents and the school that could have been avoided. If uniforms were required in public schools, this situation would not have even occurred. The topic of having a dress code in school can be controversial. A majority of students and parents oppose the idea of having a strict dress code or uniforms in schools and that students should be able to express themselves freely and how ever they want to. Although, the requirement of uniforms can lessen many problems within public schools such as no judgement within students about what they are wearing and equality between males and females students about what they wear. …show more content…
Having school uniforms will make it easier for the students since they would no longer have trouble choosing the perfect outfits or competing with other students, like most students do constantly. Additionally, students would no longer have reason to be teased about what they wear, since everyone will be wearing the same clothes. “Those in favor of dress codes say they help kids learn how to dress appropriately for certain situations--an important life skill. Dress codes can also help cut down bullying by taking the focus away from what the students are wearing”(Bugg). As Bugg says, it is clear to see that enforcing uniforms can help public schools in more ways than one and prepare them for future professional
One main reason public schools have uniforms / dress code is because in 1996, President Clinton allowed the school uniform movement and said, “If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms.” This gave schools the power to control the students with dress code. A few pros about having dress code in public schools are prevention from formation of gangs, identify intruders, resist peer pressure, and take away social barriers. But the cons give more reasons on why not to have dress code. Some are violation of freedom of expression, “Band-Aid” on school violence, bully targets, financial issue for certain families, and difficult to enforce. Dress code can vary from a button down solid polo with a tie, to solid colors, navy / khaki pants, to any polo shirt without offensive print / sayings and unholy jeans. Dress code also can exclude tattoos, baggy clothes, holes, scarves, leggings, strapless garments, and visible piercings (except in ear).
Bates, Laura. "How School Dress Codes Shame Girls and Perpetuate Rape Culture." Time. Time, 22 May 2015. Web. 18 Feb. 2016. In this article, Bates argues that today’s school dress codes are sexist and leave a lasting impression on young girls. Bates explains that there are several cases where girls are being punished for their adolescent bodies being distractions to boys. Also, it can teach a young girl that her body is dangerous and that a young boy automatically has the right to sexually diminish and harass adolescent girls in schools. This thought process is what causes a stigma later in college, declaring that when someone is sexually assaulted on campus, the person was asking for it. This can be detrimental to a young girl, and can even
Having some sameness can create a safe environment in schools. Having school uniforms can help decrease in-school violence, theft rates and gang colors. School uniforms can also eliminate distraction that clothes can cause. According to a study done at a Long Beach middle school overall school crime decreased by 36% when they enforced a mandatory program. If people did not have to wear school uniforms gang rates may go up, theft rate would be higher and it would help the school see who belongs at school and who doesn’t. You need school uniforms to have a safe environment for people to teach and learn.
Officials say that students feel happier when they don’t have to worry about their clothes. Which would help students focus in class better. Virginia Draa, assistant professor at Youngstown state university took a survey with students with uniforms and students without uniforms. Her results were fascinating, she said that even if their wasn’t that much of an academic improvement. But she said there were better attendance, graduation and Proficiency rates. It is proven that uniforms not only help for graduation and other rates it also helps to gain discipline. Having uniforms in school would help students take school more seriously. Students would feel equal in class because there wouldn’t be any differences in clothing.
Many people say wearing uniforms will infringe student’s freedoms, or rights. However, wearing uniforms in public school will do none of these. They just try to regulate all students so that they can achieve their goal and live a better life in the future. Besides that, students still have choice to wear whatever they want after class. Because of the advantage, wearing uniforms would offer such as positive environment, improves grades, behavior, and safety.Students enrolled in public schools should be required to wear a school uniform.
It is a great idea for schools to implement a policy on school uniforms because statistics show that students who wear uniforms make better grades. Additionally, male students are not distracted by what female students are (or aren't) wearing. Moreover, students feel a sense of fairness with one another as they are all wearing the same things. When students are at one with one another, their confidence soars, which leads to better academic performance. Student uniforms help reduce the amount of bullying, and students who would normally be bullied now have a much better disposition while at school.
As a teenager, clothing is a very large role in your life. After all, your style portrays your personality and the crowd that you hang out with. Most teens spend nearly all of their income on buying the next fashion. But today, teens have to second think their purchases for they may not be able to wear them at their school. Public schools have begun to crack down on the dress code, causing high school students to have to ditch half their wardrobe. The public school dress code is questionable in that is the wardrobe of students really affecting the way they learn and act, and are some of the codes really necessary.
Each day school is a nightmare for you! Kids laugh at your clothing and your style. They may pick on you or even bully you. Your clothes are not cute or “in style,” and students judge you for that. This makes you feel dreadful and horrible because some families can’t afford expensive and fancy outfits. This is one, of the many, reasons why some schools are switching to school uniforms. As an example, 19% of schools have switched to uniforms in 2011-2012.(“School Uniforms”) Some argue that they take away freedom of expression, while others think that uniforms stop bullying and have many other beneficial effects. This makes school uniforms such a hot topic from schools to homes. I firmly believe that school uniforms are essential to schools because they expand school safety, put a plug on bullying, and substitute broken dress codes violations.
School uniforms will improve our schools. The idea of school uniforms are great as it can make bullying decline as everyone is wearing the same cloths. Many people are bullied as their brands and logos on clothes and this would eliminate it. It also improves school spirit as they can wear the school logo and any sayings the school has. This is cheaper on parents as they don't have to buy certain school shirts, jackets, and sweats for example. We could save hundreds of dollars. This is why school uniforms would be good. Many parents have to go through tough hard times and struggle to buy students cloths. So many parents would have spare money if we had school uniforms.Last not but least, Many children wanna show their own individuality. They
Society has taught people that they should be themselves and express their individuality. There are many people out there who think everyone should act and be the same because people get judged if they act or dress differently. Everyone is their own person and no one should have to conform to everyone else in society. The debate over whether or not uniforms should be required has been going on for years. Many schools have decided it is best to have uniforms when, in all honesty, uniforms make no difference in academic success or behavior of students. Just because someone wears a uniform does not make them any smarter of behave in a better manner. School uniforms should not be required, not only because they do not let students express themselves, but also they cost families more money and do not affect what goes on at school.
Mentioned in Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “When children wear their own clothes into school, this then becomes a time for them to judge each other, so it prevents competition and teasing” (Pros and Cons of School Uniforms). When you have school uniforms you won’t be wearing different things so you will become more equal. If the students are equal, it then reduces judgement and bullying between the students and makes the school a better place. Another positive statement on how school uniforms are beneficial comes from, Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “Many educators believe that students who wear school uniforms perform better academically in school, and a study done in 1988 by Notre Dame shows a slight statistical evaluation in student performances among students who wear uniforms” (LoveToKnow). School uniforms will remove the clothing distraction and increase the amount of time given to the academics. Some students take time in the morning to get ready for school, uniforms will allow that time for sleep and studies. According to Procon.org, “Parents can reduce their financial burden when their children are limited to wearing one outfit everyday” (ProConorg Headlines). You won’t feel the pressure to buy clothes that are in style, or expensive and trendy. Uniforms are easier to maintain. They tend to last longer and can be washed easier than other clothes. Wearing school uniforms create a community of higher educated students and equality to
School uniforms make students look more formal, and progressively affects a student’s self-esteem, discipline, and safety, and develops students to be more confident of what they can achieve in life. First, uniforms are easier for schools to enforce than non-uniforms. Uniforms help students have fewer penalizing problems and increased attendance than non-uniform schools. When students are not wearing uniforms, students tend to act the way they are dressed for school.
We see stories Social media has more stories of girls being sent home because of dress code violations. Maybe the problem isn’t the students, but dress codes in general. Dress codes ultimately disrupt the pursuit of knowledge for the students, encourage gender bias, and can be dangerous. If we want the younger generations to succeed in the education system, we should utilize school uniforms. Uniforms in schools from elementary to high schools, will promote gender equality and facilitate student safety.
Children tend to break off into "cliques," and uniforms could possibly help unite students. Finding creative ways to express their individuality through other outlets other than fashion can help children forge friendships based on their common interests. In conclusion, I feel that school uniforms are something all schools should consider implementing in their policy. All of these points show that they could be budget-friendly, help children focus, and lower the barriers children can build up because of merely what they are wearing.
They will make kids feel more equal, save parents money, and prevent bullying. The first reason uniforms should be required in schools is, they create equality among the students. Since students will be dressing the same as each other every day, they will be treated and viewed more equally from there teachers and their classmates. The uniforms will also make the classrooms feel more like a team atmosphere and will make students work together easier since they feel equal. It is similar to the way a football team works.
