Imagine, if you will: you are a student at Collinsville High School, occupied with homework in your study hall. Your study hall teacher gets the class’s attention, and with a somber look tells the class that all of the ideas we were hoping for in our school were struck down by the school board. This is the possible outcome of our school if the school board is not fixed with new and more experienced people. Many people have been talking about the possibility of modifying who is in our school board. CHS should have more experienced people on their school board because the choices made by the board do not always relate to CHS in particular, points made by the government are not met by showing how important they are, and the people on the board have little to no experience with the kids or teachers and their struggles in the school. Firstly, our school board should have more experienced people because the choices they make are irrelevant to our school specifically. There is a rule in our student handbooks that states that colored hair can be distracting to the classroom environment and should be up to the teachers deciding whether or not to allow it. They’re wrong because this outsider’s view is making negative decisions for our school and attempting to make us the “best” school possible, when in reality they want us to have the least distractions so we can have the best test scores. This is an outrageous way to try and make students do their best. Students shouldn’t be compared to others in other schools when we are not yet performing to the best of our ability. The Chicago Public School District is the third largest school district in the United States educating around 400,000 students. Back in 1987 CPS was named “the worst in the nation”(). Moving its way up to the top, since then, CPS had completely rebuilt its structure, appointing leaders and reformed ideas. Now, with a deficit projected to be around $1 billion CPS is headed back in a downwards path, money being the biggest issue. The United States Federal Government already has financial issues of its own, which makes dealing with a CPS budget a problem within a problem. CPS, with a $6.6 billion FY2013 budget, is now taking a new strategy based upon a flawed “Student-Based Budgeting System”. The Board of Education is also struggling to solve the debt they have reached, and with their FY2014 plans this year’s budget book is argued to be “one of the most poorly written budgets”(). The way CPS is handling their budget is not benefiting the lives and education of students and is leaving CPS at a loss with giant financial issues.
An article from the Los Angeles Times showed that the majority of Californians give California schools “a grade of C or below” and half think that the quality of schools will continue to decline (Watanabe). While the economic downturn affected the public school system in a negative way, it was not the sole root of its problems. It just simply exacerbated existing issues. The role of school boards “is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff.” Although this is their main purpose, they also have to balance a district budget, create a district-yearly calendar, negotiate contract, construction, and approve district curriculum. (Stover 1) Although it might seem harsh to argue with school boards even though they do a lot, it is their job. They were appointed to lead and better the community, guide our children. If they are not mentally ready to be a leader, then why run for a school board member, the focus should be on the children, how to better education for them, and how to make sure they get the most out of every day coming to school.
Others believe that the states data is incomplete and inaccurate, and consequently schools were being graded on data that was faulty. It does not seem fair to me to judge a school and post inaccurate information of that school in the papers.
By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. Students’ rights in schools are limited or just taken away. Kids are forced to do whatever the officials at their school, either the principal or the teachers, tell the students to do. Are charter schools really better than public schools? Are they the answer to solving the educational void in this generation and future generations to come? The answer is no to both questions. The main point of charter schools are to create more educational benefits for those who have either struggled or didn't think public schooling was sufficient enough for them. The problem with that is in fact; they aren't performing better than public schools, loosely regulated, and the theory that charters create competition isn't completely true. Charter schools are not the way to go about fixing the school systems. They create more harm than success.

Although there is more than one reform option that looks good on paper, there is only one option that has any proof that it could possibly work in favor of the students and the option is charter schools. They address all the problems in public schools and they incorporate all reform options, except school shutdowns, in their reform plan. Charter schools are the reform option that shows the most improvement in areas that LPS slack in. Including other reform options in their reform plan is a way that can almost insure progression. All public schools across the nation that are declining to low performing schools should look into taking up charter schools as their reform option.

The school system needs to be changed entirely, but solutions to this problem simply aren’t out there. Experimentation needs to be done in certain school systems to determine the most successful method. Until then, the United States of America will continue to support a failing school system and will continue to produce uneducated adults.
In conclusion, I have showed what concerns are not addressed by the political process and why. Many things could be drastically changed on both sides to help these matters. I feel that the answer to this lies in political socialization. If parents stressed the importance of these topics along with the schools cooperation, concerns would be addressed and everyone would be heard alike.
When all stakeholders share similar core values and agree on the aims of education, reform efforts stand a better chance for success. Knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and citizenship are core values found at the heart of my beliefs for education. I also believe it is the aim of education to prepare students as contributing members of society. In schools where core values and education aims are revisited due to reform implementation, strategies are identified along with a plan for implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The federal government, state, districts, school leadership, teachers, students and parents all have significant responsibilities to make reform efforts a success.
