Billie Oxendale Mr. Boelter Comp Lit 2 7 May 2024 The Holocaust in Hollywood There are two major movies that showcase the events of the Holocaust, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and Schindler’s List. However, the two movies take two different approaches to capturing those events. After watching both movies, I have seen two major differences expressed throughout each one. With that information in mind, I feel as though Schindler’s List did a better job at depicting the Holocaust than The Boy in the Striped Pajamas because of the true story, the wide variety of Nazi tendencies expressed, and the viewpoints from each side of the war. Then, by the end of the story, Bruno sneaks into the camp to help Schmol search for his father. Except, Bruno entered at the same time Schmol’s bunker was being gassed, and Bruno walked with Schmol to the chamber, and died with Schmol in the chamber. It is a sad story that showcases the effects of Nazi propaganda, youth indoctrination, and racial ideology on citizens. Despite being a sad tale about children, it is not plausible. How are we expected to understand the world during the Holocaust when it is a story that isn’t plausible? Especially when you compare it to Schindler’s List. Schindler’s List is a story that explains the infamous list from Oskar Schindler that saved over a thousand Jewish lives. While the movie is romanticized for Hollywood, the major points are true and actually happened. Not only are they historically true, but they are plausible events. With how aggressively guarded the camps were, if you couldn’t get out, you couldn’t get in. Plus, the soldiers would recognize the man who runs the camp's son.
