When parents ask teachers what do the students do everyday and the teacher replies with play, it is a shocker to the parents because they will think how are they learning when they are just playing? Parents may think learning letters and numbers are essential to help children develop cognitively however research shows that play improves many skills such as cognitive skills where they problem solve, language skills, and social skills. There is an increase in evidence supporting the correlations between cognitive competence and high quality of pretend play which also benefits other skills. It is extremely essential for students to be offered to pretend play to see changes. From the first time I observe this class the students at the dramatic play area were just pretending to take care of a baby by feeding a baby with a milk bottle and by my recent visit, the children are able to take of the baby by changing its clothes, feeding it milk and water, pushing the baby in a carriage and talking to the baby. She said, “Functional play is a form of play in which children use their senses and muscles to experiment with materials and learn how things go together. It satisfies children's need to be active and to explore.” Pretend play includes two elements which is imitation and imagination. Imitation is when the child imitates a real person and real situation. When seeing pretend play you will see cognitive competence in children's play where there will be a connection where the child uses their imagination and imitation to transform objects and actions symbolically using their own imagination which involves them to think use their cognitive skills. I observe a one plus class where the children are a little over one years old. Every time I go observe them the dramatic area( pretend play) is always packed. Many students wants to go there. In the dramatic area there are many things such as four different babies, a baby carriage, a kitchen with stove, plates, cups, food/ fruits, fake telephones, etc. Although the students are about two years old they are able to pretend play using these tools.
