In Persepolis, Marjane is with her father when there is a missile attack in Abadan. Marjane and her father warn her mother, who calls her friend Mali who lives in Abadan. Satrapi draws black lines coming from the north to show that there is darkness/evil coming from the north. North is where the government is, as well as where most people would associate hope to be. In addition to that the people coming to the north are being engulfed by those lines. The repetition of the lines creates the effect of flames from a fire which was caused by the missiles in Abadan. The Islamic Revolution was a life-changing moment that impacted her view on the world around her and her innocence shaping her into the woman she is today. Not many people understand what it feels like to feel pain, hurt and abandonment as a child from major and minor things. The author writes this story and decides for it to be a graphic novel to allow the not only young readers, but also for those who do not understand what happens everyday in the world they live in. Satrapi uses all rhetorical stances, ethos, pathos, and logos to show problems, purpose and emotions.

Due to the serious tensions looming in the air, many people would think it is strictly forbidden to laugh a little or have fun in Iran. The constant political instability makes it seem like the citizens live like robots under extreme oppression. However, in Marjane Satrapi’s biography, Persepolis, she gives an inside look at her experiences growing up in Iran and adds comic relief throughout the novel. As the main character, Marjane, evolves from an innocent girl into a mature woman, Satrapi adds bits of comic relief to highlight her typical personality while living in the midst of an oppressive society.
In the graphic novel, Persepolis, the main character, Marjane, faces many coming of age moments. Each one of these change her in a way that impacts her view on the world around her as her and her family strive for a better life amongst a war that hinders their ability to follow their beliefs. Marjane learns to forgive, experiences pain and suffering, and changes her opinions on God and her own views on religion forever. Marjane’s life has been filled with hard times, but also glorious moments as well.
Persepolis is a graphic novel depicting the life of author Marjane Satrapi’s life throughout the Islamic revolution, starting from her childhood. At one point in the story, the Shah of Iran has left the country, and Marjane’s parents think that they will have new freedoms. Later, however, the country is bombed and fundamentalists occupy the United States embassy. After these events, Marjane is ultimately forced to leave the country without her parents to live in Europe. This was foreshadowed in arguably the most significant panel in Persepolis, the 7th panel on page 43. It features Marjane and her parents, sitting in the family’s living room, the news on a television in the background. They are discussing the fact that the Shah recently left Iran to live in Egypt. Around the panel’s frame is a serpent-like creature. In this panel, Marjane Satrapi uses the frame, and contrasting facial expressions and dialogue to show that the Shah is not the only problem in Iran, foreshadowing the unexpected events of unrest that fill the rest of the story.

During our class discussions, the issue of identity in Marjane Satrapi’s novel, Persepolis (2004), became a contentious issue. The question was asked whether Persepolis might be understood to being in-dialogue with western ways of seeing and did the effects of modernization influence the identity of Marjane’s protagonist in Persepolis. How does the novel involve the issue of identity? I will extend the argument and, through the exploration of Marji’s changing ideologies, I will attempt to prove that Marji is caught between the traditional eastern culture and western modernization.

Even with the many different cultures in Iran, she stuck up for what she believed in and rebelled against the things she thought were wrong. In Persepolis, Marjane’s growth is affected by various aspects of culture including religion, government, and social organization.
Currently, I find myself to use pictures to comprehend new information even a child as well. When I was learning about World War II in middle school, I discovered that the images of the war were very intriguing than reading a textbook in social studies class. In the book, Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, this piece of literature included so much history that had been tied into the novel displaying comic strips of what Satrapi imagined from her childhood, what had really happened and the life the people in Iran experienced in times of war. Not only the Iran-Iraq War has images that depict the tragic event, but the Holocaust can be taught through pictures as well. Since the literary devices in a work are needed to correctly convey a message, she found it necessary to include these and manipulate them in her favor. Satrapi uses the innocence of a child along with morals in her pictures and a relation of cultures to effectively communicate her message. It is necessary to examine how she manipulates such literary devices in order to gain a full understanding of the text. To begin with, Satrapi writes Persepolis from a child’s point of view.
Satrapi is able to illustrate the characteristics of the characters as well as reflect on the past. Having the ability to incorporate past and present is a vital element in fully understanding and following her story. The past events in Marjis life reflect how she makes her descions in the present. It is imperative that one must always build from the bottom and work your way up. Having a strong foundation is the vital element in creating something successful. If an individual does exist, then they are no longer a part of the society causing rebellion. In I and Thou, Buber explains that the self becomes either more disconnected or more unified through its relationships to others. The film Persepolis is an adaption to Marjane Satrapi’s The Complete Persepolis coming-of-age graphic memoir. It involves a young Muslim girl name Marjane as she comes of age within the environment of the Iranian Revolution. The film explores the actualization of Marjane through allegory to show how she must construct her identity within a foundation of westernization, religion, and gender.
In the story “The Shabbat” Marji’s Jewish neighbor’s home gets destroyed by a missile, at first Marji thought that her own house was bombed. But in reality, her neighbor home was the one that got hit. In this scene Marji is traumatized when she sees the arm of her dead friend Neda. She said, “ No scream in the world could have relieved my suffering and my anger”(142). Neda’s family were Jewish and getting hit by missile, it proves that not matter where you go, there will be always violent crimes related with religion. This scene represents one of the most important moments in Marjane’s life. The scars, grief and anger emotions that she felt, made her stop romanticize about religion. Indeed, the brutal image of her dead friend traumatized her, and those images made her to act more rebellious. According to Hillary Chute, the technique of using black and white colors in Persepolis clearly emphasizes the traumatic stage of Marjane. Hillary Chute States, “ Satrapi’s drawings and the infinitely complicated traumatic event, they depict: harassment, torture, execution, bonbings, mass murder”(99). The technique of using only black and white colors helped the drawings to illustrate its main goal, which was fundamentalist religion. The use of black and white colors in the drawing show the traumatic events that Satrapi acquired after witnessing violent
