The setting of Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout is her home. We learn from the poem that the home is full of trash and smell bad. The story Is about a girl who will not take out the trash. Thoughout the poem, her father whines and screams at her to take the trash out. This seems to be the one chore that Sarah refuses to do. The characters in this poem are Sarah, her father, and her friends. Sarah is the main character who refuses to take out the trash. She is not lazy, she just doesn’t like this chore. The second character introduced in this poem is Sarah’s father. The father is constantly telling Sarah that she needs to take out the trash. The second stanza is only two lines, “My father told us this, one night,/and then continued eating dinner.” This stanza breaks up the chronology of the poem, pushing the previous stanza into the past, and making it disjointed, almost like another poem in itself. The result of the father continuing eating after he tells the story shows how dead he is inside, the recalling of the story no longer affecting him in the same way it does the reader and his own family. It is implied that he is the only one able to eat after telling the story. This short stanza foreshadows the father’s personality change.
Towards the climax of the passage, the young girl shares her perspective on her dad’s desire to help her achieve her academic goals. “Nothing’s more important than his books and vocabulary words. He might say I matter, but when he goes on a scavenger hunt for a book, I realize that I really don’t” (Lopez 26). This cite illustrates just how sightless the teenage narrator is because she fails to see that her father only left the dinner table to assist her and to do something generous, but from her perspective she takes it as her father abandoning her. I can infer that the child’s anger and feeling of not mattering, which led to her storming off to her room, could have easily been solved if she asked her father what his true intentions were in pushing Watership Down so hard during a nice family dinner. On the other hand, the dad in “Confetti Girl” simply doesn’t pay attention to his daughter’s feelings often enough, and that sets off a bomb of conflict in their relationship as well. At the end of the excerpt, the father stoops to find a book, but is so engrossed in his task that he practically treats his daughter as non-existent; she narrates the following emotion-filled line. “He doesn’t hear my angry, stomping footsteps” (Lopez 27). People who are in the lower class have to struggle for a job every day and people who are in upper class also have their own problems to deal with. In "Singapore" a woman is likely lower class because she works at the airport and her job is to clean the bathroom. Many of her poetry was inspired by the emotions following this event, and recounting memories made thereafter. “Graveyard Blues” details the funeral for Trethewey’s mother, a somber scene. The flowing words and repetition in the poem allow the reader to move quickly, the three-line stanzas grouping together moments. The poem begins with heavy lament, and the immediate movement of the dead away from the living, “Death stops the body’s work, the soul’s a journeyman [author emphasis]” (Tretheway 8, line 6). Like the epitaph from Wayfaring Stranger, Trethewey indicates that the dead depart the world of the living to some place mysterious, undefined. The living remain, and undertake a different journey, “The road going home was pocked with holes,/ That home-going road’s always full of holes” (Trethewey 8, line 10-11). My parents and I first moved from India to United States, they worked at Dunkin Donuts as cleaners. I did not like what they were doing because in India my parents owned their own business. In “Singapore” the speaker did not like the job that a cleaning woman was doing. She notices this scene is disgusting because a woman is cleaning a white bowl (a toilet), then she argues the point that the woman in the poem is doing a cleaning job, yet she is beautiful in the poet’s eyes. The narrator states, "A person wants to stand in a happy place, in a poem" (line 16). When the narrator says “happy place” she means everyone deserves a job where there is a chance for them to succeed in life. This poem is about a servant that serves other servants. This servant has to clean up after and feed these men, and their work is never done because it is an endless cycle. This servant is of a lower status than the rest of them because the clean up after everyone, and therefore is seen as lowly and is ignored by them all. This servant is at the bottom of the social ladder and is being isolated because they are different. Then this servant goes on to tell the story of their uncle that had a cage built for him because he was crazy. They go on to say that they are glad they got away from that, they had made jokes about the cage being a jail. That even when they were there with the uncle in the attic, they were still happy enough to have a roof over their head. Even though they are deemed as worthless and lowly as the servants servant, that they will stay because they must be kept and it is better than living outside, although that would mean freedom, the roof is better than the ground. The tone of this poem is very casual, the speaker tells this seemingly sad and unfortunate story in a manner that sounds like casual conversation.
