In Santos F. Ramos’s article, “Building a Culture of Solidarity: Racial Discourse, Black Lives Matter, and Indigenous Social Justice” Ramos expresses his concerns and principles in a search for solidarity within today’s society. Ramos uses his experience as a non-Black Xicano in order to highlight points of social injustice that has been aimed at mainly at Blacks as well as those that are Indigenous. Ramos states that today’s issues involve a discrepancy in social power (4). Within the article, there are also points about understanding identity in correlation with the Black community (4). When discussing race, Ramos points out that there is often an oversimplification (5). The article touches upon key problems and solutions as to how to incorporate solidarity. The consequences that arose from people simply making hashtags like Latino Lives Matter and Asian Lives Matter were an aspect that I did not realize was very prolific. I agreed with Ramos’s point on how sympathy alone is not enough to be in solidarity with Black Lives Matter (4). Ramos declares that there needs to be an active role in interrogating the “anti-Blackness” within our own communities (4). A solution that is available involving the hashtags was that of “#APis4Black Lives” which included Asian and Pacific Islanders going against the Oakland Police Department with the Blackout Collective (4). It is a solution because the incident was with the goal in mind of supporting Black communities. I agree with Ramos because Black Lives Matter is an organization which focuses on the lives of black individuals and emitting a form of sympathy by creating hashtags is not the way to go when trying to solve monumental issues in black
