In Sandra Benitez’s the Weight of All Things, Nicolás de la Virgen Veras faces many perils as a nine-year-old boy witnessing a civil war in El Salvador. Not knowing that his mother is dead, Nicolás ventures throughout El Salvador in search for her, encountering and unwillingly working for both the rebels and the National Army. Benitez uses the motif of being “caught in the middle” to convey the message that in war, there are no real winners, but the innocent always lose because they are senselessly killed and injured or forced to take part in battle regardless of their personal beliefs. Even though Nicolás’s mother and the others in the massacre did nothing to anger the soldiers they were still caught in the middle of the war. Using this motif, Benitez explains that the deadly feud between the guerrillas and the army causes the soldiers to automatically assume that since Romero and the guerrillas both fought for the poor, the people supporting Romero are guerrillas as well even though Romero didn’t approve of the guerrillas’ violent actions. Also, since the war causes many people to die and ultimately splits the country in two, it splits up families like how Nicolás loses his mother. Towards the middle of the story, soldiers from the National Army find Nicolás and take him back to the garrison where he is questioned by the captain.
