Sammy was a girl that she was shy. She had her group of friends that she trusted and said everything. But in the school was a girl that she was mean and thinks she can judge everyone. One night Sammy was about to sleep but in a moment to another she was restless. Because she gets scar and she didn’t even know. She saw an ugly monster, she was cold she was like a cold corpse. Sammy says“ It’s nothing, go to sleep”. But she hears a voice telling her“You know that’s not true”. When she hears that, she starts shaking like a little Chihuahua. In the next day her mom went to her room and tell her“wake up honey”. Sammy says to her mom what she saw in the night. Her mom say“it’s just your imagination”. In John Updike's short story, "A & P," the main character, Sammy, is a cashier at a small grocery store. He is seen by many to be a sexist pig, describing in detail how he sees the three girls that walk in to the store. Sammy is in fact a sexist pig by what he says about them. With evidence and quotes from the story, Sammy can be determined to be a sexist pig. He describes the first girl he sees walking in the store as "a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it..." (421). Although the comment was kept to himself, in mind it is a sexist comment. Though the girl was in a bathing suit and there was no beach around, she probably wasn't trying to get the attention of young guys. She was just there to "pick up a jar of herring snacks" (423). Describing the girl's "can" (421), meaning her backside, gives Sammy some credit of being a sexist pig. Sammy slowly begins to see the other two girls follow the first. He notices not only what they're wearing, but what the little clothing that they have on covers up. "This clean bare plane of the top of her chest down from the shoulder bones like a dented sheet of metal tilted in the light" (421). With this quote, he is describing how the bathing suit was slipping off the girl, but in a more demeaning manner. "With the straps pushed off, there was nothing between the top of the suit and top of her head except just her..." (421). Sammy describes that he just sees the girl, a one-nighter type. He doesn't see that she's a human, but just a plaything. One other quote/thought that Sammy has while these girls (whom remain nameless throughout the story), is when the one he calls Queeny takes her money from "the hollow at the center of her nubbled pink top" (423). He begins to get excited as he uncreases the bill as "it just having come from between the two smoothest scoops of vanilla [he] had ever known there were" (424). Sammy seems to be more of a sexist pig, as the reader proceeds through the story.
In John Updike’s 1959 short story “A&P”, the protagonist, Sammy, makes an abrupt decision to quit his job as a cashier after his boss, Lengel, embarrasses a group of girls for being indecently dressed. Although the decision was unplanned, Updike makes it a point to inform the audience about Sammy’s negative and unpleasant outlook on his occupation. To do this, he illustrates some of the incidents that may have contributed to Sammy quitting his job, most of which are rather ironic and unusual. Sammy quit his job because he did not view it as a permanent occupation, he wanted to make an independent decision without the guidance of his parents, and he wanted to impress the group of girls that had been embarrassed by Lengel due to their immodest
Sammy is a 19-year-old, who is the narrator of the story. He is also a cashier in the A&P grocery store in a small Massachusetts town. He is a teenager with a healthy interest in the opposite sex and an observational sense. Sammy can be described as a typical male trying to find his way in society. This story, that Sammy tells has taken place on a hot summer Thursday. Sammy thinks of most people in his town as “sheep,” or followers, “even scared pigs in a chute” (Updike 29). He thinks that everyone in the town acts, dresses, looks, and even think the same. He’s desperate in finding a way to break out of this boring and stuffy mold he’s falling into, but he cannot seem to figure out how.
The short story, “A&P”, follows the thought process of Sammy. Sammy is a young cashier that finds himself striving to be someone else. The protagonist in “A&P” by John Updike is a static character because he reveals himself as an adolescent who remains censorious, covetous, and narcissistic. The way Sammy describes the customers, the girls, and the choice he makes at the end reveal him as a static character.
In “A&P,” Sammy is the typical teenager who believes to be distinct from the rest of his co-workers. Sammy works at the cash register noticing everything and everyone around him. For example, he enjoys every detail of the three girls’ physical appearance, “She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit” (1). His sense of superiority is destroyed when he sees that in the eye of the rich, Queenie, he is just another working- class man. He finds Queenie to be the most attractive out of the three girls, his interest physical and mental interest grows as she gets closer to him, “she lofts as folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center

Sammy in “A&P” really turned me off as I was reading the short story. I really hated his negative attitude towards woman. He starts off by comparing a woman to a witch and thinking “if she'd been born at the right time they would have burned her over in Salem”. He also continues his disdain for females by commenting wondering if there is anything in a girl’s mind or “just a little buzz like a bee in a glassjar?”. I don’t know if Sammy was raised this way or because he is just a boy with ego issues that feels the need to look down upon woman. This sexist attitude is shown once again, when he feels the girls “owe him” after he heroically quits his job for them. This is a sense of entitlement that he thinks he deserves compensation from the girls
On a cold winter's night as snow begins to descend from the heavens a young woman walks out of a lodging house in the small town of Eastmore. My story is much like Sammy in that I chose to stand up for someone; however, I do not do this out of desire for them as Sammy does. My siblings and I used to swim in a USA swim team that was very competitive and vicious about winning at nearly any cost. Once when my brother and I were swimming, my brother did an exercise incorrectly. My coach is not unlike Mr. Lengel “Then everybody's luck begins to run out. Lengel comes in from haggling with a truck full of cabbages on the lot and is about to scuttle into that door marked MANAGER behind which he hides all day when the girls touch his eye. My brothers mistake was at the top of her black books, meaning that she hated it with every fiber of her being, She stomped right on over to his lane and just stood there waiting until he reached the side.
I really hate that it had to come to this but i'm tired of being treated different and like an inconvenience. I've tried to talk to you and nothing has changed.
