This article describes the sexism that the author, Sam Polk, witnessed while working on Wall Street and how he believes it affects the women working there. The article comments that there was, and is, a great deal of sexism in the workplace, specifically on Wall Street. Polk describes that sexist comments about female coworkers are how he would bond with his male coworkers when women were not present. Polk discusses how he feels that this way of speaking about women contributes to the fact that women on Wall Street do not hold high-level positions. The restaurants where I worked had owners who were very protective of their staff, treating them like family. I have witnessed instances where a guest has been extremely rude to an employee and they have been asked to leave and not come back. While Polk’s client waited until the waitress was out of earshot, many are not as careful with their words. I have been fortunate enough that the men that I work with refrain from using the degrading language described in the article, at least to my knowledge. I have not been so fortunate with guests at the restaurant. A specific incident I witnessed occurred when, after one of the waitress left a table asking if they needed anything else a male guest said to his companions that he “needs a good fuck from her.” The guest’s friends were all very amused by his comments and a few of them agreed with his comment. This particular guest was a regular at the restaurant and he had a reputation for being rude and creepy. None of the waitresses wanted to wait on him because of the way that he looked at them. This guest was asked by one of the managers, who also overheard the comment that I had heard, to leave and not return to the restaurant. I later found out from the manager that it was not the first time that he had overheard that particular guest making rude comments about members …show more content…
The guest when asked to leave got very angry with the owner and began yelling at him. The guest did not feel that he did anything wrong and did not understand why he was being asked to leave, he told the owner that he was only “playing” with the hostess. The owner informed him that if he could not respect the staff he was not welcome in the restaurant. This action is more aggressive than the comments made by men in the article or comments made by the guest in the previous example, but it shows that there is a social feeling that men can do or say whatever they want to
Sex Segregation in the Work Place In the article “Sex Segregation at Work: Persistence and Change” by Anastasia Prokos explores ideas around the challenges and reasons of sex segregation in the work place. She argues that even though the United States has made several steps in the right direction throughout our history, there is still “… women and men in the contemporary United States continue to be concentrated in different occupations, jobs, and industries” (Prokos 564). She is presenting this as a social problem that leads to stereotypes, discrimination, and unequal pay.
Despite legislation for equal opportunities, sexism is still evident in the workplace. Women have made great advancements in the workforce and have become an integral part of the labor market. They have greater access to higher education and as a result, greater access to traditionally male dominated professions such as law. While statistics show that women are equal to men in terms of their numbers in the law profession, it is clear however, that they have not yet achieved equality in all other areas of their employment. Discrimination in the form of gender, sex and sexual harassment continues to be a problem in today’s society.
In the 1930s and 40s, Adolf Hitler used the Jewish people as a scapegoat on which to blame Germany’s problems. This fear of what the Jewish people had apparently created granted the German people free reign to discriminate and detest. This hatred allowed the Nazi Regime to subsist and thrive. The same is true for The Party in 1984. The Party takes away the opportunity to expand one’s mind and freely use one’s body to one’s own pleasure, essentially taking away the humanity from human beings. In George Orwell’s 1984, The Party uses racism, sexism, and anti-semitism as a way to control the masses and quell rebellion.
Sexism is a highly talked about issue read about online, seen in the news, and experienced in the day to day lives of many. The importance of this issue can be found in many writings. Authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Linda Hasselstrom, and Judy Brady have all discussed the topic of sexism in writings and how they affected their lives. Although each writer addresses the issue of sexism, each author confronts a different type of sexism; the kind we are born into, the kind we learn growing up, and the kind that is accepted by society at the end of the day.

From a feminist perspective, this is a rich area for study. I would like to further explore the subject, to study the relationship between the server and the served…as “the relationship between the waiter and diner is problematic because of the blatant purchase of human service that is involved” (Finklestein, p. 56). This is true, and is further complicated by gender expectations and prejudices. True, attitudes towards these public-private taboos are changing, but there is much to be learned as we continue to adapt.
According to the lawsuit, the then culinary manager at the Red Lobster restaurant in Salisbury, Md., subjected Valerie Serman, Racheal Cox and Jennifer Tolbert to severe and pervasive sexual harassment, including pressing his groin against them, grabbing and groping them. The EEOC charged that the manager also frequently made sexually offensive comments, including remarks about the bodies of female employees and about his genitals. The restaurant's general manager not only failed to take prompt action to stop the sexual harassment, but he too had a history of making vulgar and sexually charged remarks about female employees, the lawsuit claimed.

Gender stereotyping is when beliefs concerning the characteristics of both women and men that contain both good and bad traits. Gender stereotyping affects both men and women but usually targets the woman more harshly (Cooks & Cusack, 2011, p.1). Gender is something that is very unique and a very interesting topic. “It has obvious links to the real world, first in the connection between many grammatical gender systems and biological size, which underpin particular gender systems and also have external correlates”(Corbett, 2013). In the workplace there are glass ceilings that are barriers based off of attitudinal and organizational bias that prevent qualified women from making it to the supervisory positions. Prior to reading the excerpts dealing with gender discrimination from Race, Class, and Gender in the United States by Paula Rothenberg, I thought that gender discrimination was becoming a thing of the past. In today’s society, I felt that we were more aware of how huge of a gap there is between men and women, and that we were constantly working to change that. However, after reading the following passages I can clearly see that this was a misconception.

Sexism is a human ideology that has created a definite border between males and females—making one of more importance than the other. This mentality has, over the years, made sexist remarks and actions a normalcy in today’s world. It can be concluded that women are treated in terms of stereotyped impressions of being the lowest class and greater evidence can be found that there are large disparities between the women and the men 's class. It can be seen that women are more likely to play casual roles as they are most likely to take seasonal and part time work so that they can work according to their needs. They are hampered from progressing upward into the organizations as they face problems like lack of health insurance, sexual harassments, lower wage rates, gender biases and attitudes of negative behavior. However, this wouldn’t have hampered the participation of the women in the work force and they continue to increase their efforts which is highly evident in the occupational and job ratios of females in the industry.
