Sexism is a human ideology that has created a definite border between males and females—making one of more importance than the other. This mentality has, over the years, made sexist remarks and actions a normalcy in today’s world. The thing about sexism is that it is not something that only affects our social interactions, but every aspect of our lives—including the business/corporate world. The way we interpret the physical differences that we, as a society, make are created by the social requirements that enable them rather than the simple, undeniable fact of racial differences. In other words, society—more specifically the social world—gives us tools particular to both our period of history and our culture, which we then use to comprehend and see race in human beings. But what is race? Many have tried to find an understanding of what it is, but all attempts resulted in the “impossibility of providing a definition” (Garner, 2009). We believe we’re entitled to say who belongs in what race, yet, when analyzed, the kinds of assumptions that create each category are incorrect. We consider race to revolve mainly around physical appearance; however, out of all the differences in the human physique, we only focus on a few features. The descriptions we use, such as ‘white’, ‘black’, ‘yellow’, ‘red’, etc. are “not even descriptions of what they claim to describe” (Garner, 2009). Even though people hold different complexions, no one is literally white or black. Just like nobody’s skin is actually yellow or red—unless they suffer from sunburn or some disease. Racism is something that has a major effect on individuals who are exposed to it and the community around them. Studies have shown that there connections between “experiences of racism and discrimination and poor physical and mental health, reduced productivity and reduced life expectancy” ("Why Is Racism a Problem?”). Racism creates barriers to economic and social participation which can result in social exclusion and establish disadvantages for generations. Like many of the man-made borders presented in this paper, racism can be found anywhere in either subtle or blatant forms. In the educational system, there is not enough focus on the negative effects of societal forces such as “racism, segregation, poverty, and urbanization on educational achievement” (“Why Is Racism a Problem?”). This, in turn, hinders the youth’s awareness of the issue at all. Lack of awareness is considered to be one of the main reasons why racism is still so prominent in our society today. Racism exists all around the world and is a big part of our society today. From schools, to work places, to even restaurants, racism is there because we, ourselves have constructed it but, not everyone can see it through their own eyes because we were all born with different perceptions. In Racism Without Racists by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, racism is described in a variety of different ways whether it is due to biological factors or simply by saying that racism does not exist and people just need to work harder. Bonilla-Silva has experienced discrimination himself and he wrote this book to show that even though it is not extremely visible like before, such as segregation, it is subtler but still plays just as big of a role in our society as before.
There is a specific meaning to race and how its role impacts society and shapes the social structures. Race is a concept that “symbolizes social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies” (Omi & Winant 55). In other words, Omi and Winant get down to the crux of the issue and assert that race is just an illusion. One would be hard pressed to find a self-proclaimed racist, however, upon further inspection, most people harbor more racist beliefs than they are willing to admit. If tolerance and equality are the goals of racial education, book such as this are partially effective. By identifying some of the main ways that colorblind racism is shown, this book can generate discussions on racial inequality, as it exists in America today. Our daily lives are affected by race, whether we are aware of it or not. How we live different aspects of our lives depends on the colour of our skin. From the types of jobs we have, the income we earn, where we live, etc. In societies fundamentally structured by race, it is important that we do not abandon the notion of race, but instead pioneer a revolution in the way that races are understood. In this paper, I will examine how the dominant groups in society define race in terms of biology, which leads to the notion of white privilege, which is their advantaged position in society, at the expense of other racial groups.
In the past, races were identified by the imposition of discrete boundaries upon continuous and often discordant biological variation. The concept of race is therefore a historical construct and not one that provides either valid classification or an explanatory process. Popular everyday awareness of race is transmitted from generation to generation through cultural learning. Attributing race to an individual or a population amounts to applying a social and cultural label that lacks scientific consensus and supporting data. While anthropologists continue to study how and why humans vary biologically, it is apparent that human populations differ from one another much less than do populations in other species because we use our cultural, rather than our physical differences to aid us in adapting to various environments.
Race as a “…social and historical idea, not biological” (Palaita, Lecture 1/25/18), only works because according to Social Construction Theory, “…these categories work because our complacency allows us to presume that the identities are natural and a group’s social status relies on biology, rather than social/cultural circumstances” (Palaita, Lecture 1/25/18). There is no existence of race in the Western world outside of the practices of colonialism, conquest, and the transatlantic slave trade” (Lecture 1). The idea of ‘race’ is a problematic concept in various academic fields. In the discipline of Anthropology, the definition of this term carries much controversy. The concept of race that many people hold is in a sense, a social construct that changes amongst different cultures, one could look at different cultures to see racial definition as a cultural phenomenon in action (Kottak, 2000:139). King supports this idea that races are not established by a set of natural forces, rather they are products of human perception, “Both what constitutes a race and how one recognises a racial difference are culturally determined” (1981:156). Women are usually targeted because they are seen as the inferior gender in society. They are often displayed as sexual objects in the media, such as in porn and video games. Because of the way women are portrayed in society, they do not have the same opportunities as men. Many people may think that sexism is not an important issue anymore because women are making their way to the top. For instance, Mary Berara, the CEO of General Motors says “There are more women in more senior roles than in 1980 when I started. But from my career perspective, I don 't go into a room and take count. I want to be recognized for my contribution and for what I do” (nymag). Women are pushing themselves to work in higher positions, to prove that they have the same ability as men. Although women are becoming more and more powerful, sexism is still a huge issue today. Women may have higher positions, but they are paid less than men. According to a news article, “In 2012, the median earnings of American women working full time year-round were $37,791. American men earned a median income of $49,398. The gender wage gap has hovered at about 77 cents on the dollar since 2007” (huffington). Racism is one of the world’s major issues today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our schools workforces, and anywhere else where social lives are occurring. It is obvious that racism is bad as it was many decades ago but it sure has not gone away. Racism very much exists and it is about time that people need to start thinking about the instigations and solutions to this matter. Many people believe that it depends on if a person was brought into the world as a racist or not but that is not the case at all. The Glass Ceiling Phenomenon ‘The Glass Ceiling’ is a barrier to prevent women rising to the highest positions in an organization as a result of informal exclusionary practices (cited in Giddens 2002, pg, 552). These practices include sexual harassment, sexual discrimination and pregnancy discrimination. Explanations for the ‘glass ceiling’ phenomena derive from the stereotype of women into traditional roles. Many men still carry the attitude despite living in this modern day and age that women are not capable of higher managerial roles and that their place rightfully belongs at home along with the house-hold chores. There is also the point that many corporate firms think twice before employing women for the top position, in terms of their level of commitment, for it is inevitable that every woman will want to have a child at some point in their life.
To put it simply the glass ceiling is one of the most prominent forms of sexism, and prejudice in the workplace. Although, rights of women, and minorities have become much more plentiful in our nation we, as Americans, still have these quite obvious showings of unjustness in the workplace. Though the glass ceiling is obvious there is not much anyone can do it about it because of the lack of proof pointing toward the unfair bias when promoting and paying
