In our world today, everyone has a different way of interpretation. Interpretation ranges from person to person and varies with every artifact that we interpret. A red octagon to some may mean to stop while to others it may have no meaning. A poem or song may have one meaning to one person and a completely different meaning to another person. To help uncover the reasoning behind an artifact a rhetorical analysis can be utilized. When one utilizes a rhetorical analysis, it will result in their interpretation of the artifact.

While in school, I learned how to read, but I was not educated on how context has different interpretations depending upon the reader. The reader has the option to decide the true meaning of the context, and what it means to the individual reader. After reading Manguel's essay, “Reading Ourselves and the World Around Us” I understood the connections between individual experiences and individual perceptions. Rick Moody, an American author, directs an essay concluding there is no “right” or “wrong” way to read a text. After Reading Moody’s essay, “The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading” I strongly believe with Moody, there is no “right” or “wrong” way to read, and there will never an authority how can tell you how to interpret (Moody 4). From reading these essays, I have decided on the notion that I agree and I disagree with Moody’s opinion; I agree with the idea that conclusions should be left for the reader however, I disagree with Moody’s view that there is no wrong way to read when it comes to literal texts.

President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act over 50 years ago which requires that men and women be paid equal for equal level jobs. Over the last 15 years women have only gotten a nickel closer to equal pay. Though much has been said about the injustice of unequal pay very little attention has been paid to trying to find a solution to this problem. To most, there is no longer a wage gap discrimination. However statistically women are only making 77cents for every dollar a man makes. Women involved in the government have stood up and tried to get the Paycheck Fairness Act approved which would reinforce the 1963 Equal Pay Act; this has been denied twice already.

It is imperative that an interpreter get involved within the community, and be “supportive of and able to adhere to Deaf cultural norms, morals, and values” (Kanda, 1989, p. 2). When working with Deaf individuals, interpreters are working with a minority that has experience oppression and discrimination. It is imperative that I, even as an interpreter student, remain sensitive to this fact, and be aware of the barriers that the hearing world has imposed upon the Deaf community. Interpreters are also working with individuals who are proud of their culture and Deafness. According to Humphrey & Alcorn (2007), “a part of the communication environment is the cultural milieu” (p. 34), and to effectively interpret, “you must be knowledgeable of, and comfortable with, the wide variety of cultures that frame the communication and experiences of everybody for whom you interpret” (p. 38).
