Is the Internet Safe for Teens?

*”Get off the internet it is bad for you!”...”It’s dangerous and you shouldn’t be on it.” You hear parents say this all the time and don’t have anything to explain why the internet is good for you. Teens should be allowed to use social media because it helps connect to faraway relatives and friends you may not know well, provides students with additional resources to help with school, and allows people to get through tough phases in life such as depression or suicidal thoughts.
*It is devastating yet a part of life how friends and family can move in a heartbeat; however, social media can help anyone stay connected. Using Skype or FaceTime can be useful to communicate with those friends or …show more content…

College student from the Journal of Applied Developmental Physiology, explains, from his point of view, that “59% of students with access to the Internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments. After George Middle School in Portland, OR introduced a social media program to engage students, grades went up by 50%, chronic absenteeism went down by 33%, and 20% of students school-wide voluntarily completed extra-credit assignments. Using the internet can give you many advantages however, there are people out there that are hackers and have a perverted approach to the internet. The ‘Child Development Institute’ had some things that needed to be said for the safety of the children on the internet; “A child should never know more than a parent does about the internet. At the very least, you should know about the same. If you are looking to block adult websites or websites that have offensive language, it will not do you any good if your teenager knows ways to get around the parental controls that you set.” This quote has a good point for teens however they are wrong. This quote is from the Child Development Center on how they feel about it however people haven’t looked at the good side of it. Children can be out of control anytime however it is the parent's responsibility to give them consequences so they don’t do it
