Many people go to schools and don't worry about black or white people around the schools and everyone gets along and are in the same class . Everyone cares for each other and play sports together too . But a long time ago they cared what your skin color was and would not let blacks or whites go to the same school . But a girl changed our world by letting blacks into all white schools and her name was Ruby Bridges . She helped blacks and whites go to the same school it was not as easy as you think just because the color of her skin there have been a lot of problems like for example protesting that had been a problem for when she went to school Ruby Bridges was born on Sept 8 , 1954 , and lived in Tylertown , Mississippi and moved to New Orleans , Louisiana when she was 4 years old . her parents were Abon and Lucille Bridges . Ruby’s dad worked at a gas station and her mom went to different jobs to get money . Ruby had 2 brothers and a sister there names were Micheal, Joana, and Malcom . Ruby started at an all black kindergarten until she went to the all white school called Wiliam Frantz public school . A civil rights group called the National Association for the Advancement of colored people (NAACP) was working to integrate New Orleans’s schools. …show more content…
parents pulled kids out of schools and the kids that stayed could not look or see Ruby because the principal hid the kids and would not let them play with her at recess . That means the playground was empty . just think what would it be like if there was no one on the playground it would be terrible for me. if there was no one on the playground to play with me. Ruby Bridges was born on September 8, 1954, in Tylertown, Mississippi. When she lived in Mississippi her parents shared cropped lands with her grandparents. When Ruby was six years old her mom thought about her education and wanted to move. In 1960 Abon and lucille (Ruby’s parents) decided to move for a better change in life. Ruby and her parents moved to a good part of town where there would be less discrimination and hate in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Ruby Bridges is a prime example of how little girls with bright minds hold so much power. Not only was she intelligent, Ruby was also courageous, determined and warm-hearted. During the time when she was growing up, society was more discriminative towards African-Americans. It was so severe that little kids were separated in schools just based on the pigment of their skin. As the first black child to attend a white elementary school, she was defying stereotypes and changing history, not to mention, she looked absolutely adorable doing it.

Lucy Stone was born in West Brookfield, Massachusetts on August 13, 1818. Her parents, Francis Stone and Hannah Matthews, were abolitionists and Congregationalists. Stone retained their anti-slavery opinions but rejected the Congregationalist Church after it criticized abolitionists. Along with her anti-slavery attitude, Lucy Stone also pursued a higher education. She completed local schools at the age of sixteen and saved money until she could attend a term at Mount Holyoke Seminary five years later. In 1843, Stone enrolled at the Oberlin Collegiate Institute (later Oberlin College). With her graduation in 1847, she became the first Massachusetts woman to earn a bachelor’s degree. However, Lucy Stone was not done expressing her abolitionist and feminist beliefs to the public (anb.org).
Lizzie Andrew Borden was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, where she spent her entire life, in July of 1860. She lived with her wealthy father, Andrew Borden, and step-mother, Abby Borden. Lewis shares that Lizzie's biological mother, Sarah, passed away when Lizzie was very young and Andrew remarried just a couple years later. The three of them, along with Lizzie's sister Emma who was ten years older, lived a mostly simple life together.
Ruby Bridges is one of the very many people who has changed history. Bridges has helped desegregate schools all around the world. She still stands today, sharing her thoughts and ideas to stop racism and segregation. Ruby’s life has had many ups, and downs, but she still seems to look on the bright side in almost every situation. Whites threatened and harshly criticized brave, confident, heroic American activist, Ruby Bridges for being one of the first African-American children to enter the William Frantz Elementary School, a school for white students, which helped end segregation in schools. Without Ruby Bridges, our schools may still be segregated to this day.
Oliver Brown, father of Linda Brown decided that his third grade daughter should not have to walk one mile through a railroad switchyard just to get to the bus stop before she could even get to the separate Negro school for her area. He attempted to enroll her in the white public school only three blocks from their home, but her enrollment was denied due to her race. The browns believed this was a violation of their rights, and took their case to the courts. This wasn’t the first time that blacks found their constitutional rights violated. After the civil war, laws were passed to continue the separation of blacks and whites throughout the southern states, starting with the Jim Crow laws which officially segregated the whites from the black. It wasn’t until 1896 in Plessy vs. Ferguson that black people even began to see equality as an option. Nothing changed in the world until 1954 when the historical ruling of Brown vs. The Board of Education that anything changed. Until then, all stores, restaurants, schools and public places were deemed ‘separate but equal’ through the Plessy vs. Ferguson ruling in 1896. Many cases just like the Brown vs. Board of Education were taken to the Supreme Court together in a class action suite. The world changed when nine justices made the decision to deem segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
Her search eventually takes her to Chicago, where many of her former fellow sharecroppers from Clarksdale reside. Ruby Daniels personifies many of the issues that plague blacks, such as illegitimate children, drug use, and job insecurity. Ruby also reinforced stereotypes of single black mothers of the time, having been reliant on public aid. The schools that had been made for black people were extremely poor, with very books throughout each school and classes ranged from 40 - 50 children per class. This was not the case with white people and their schools. The white peoples schools flourished with books, equipment and the classes were kept low with manageable sizes. Good teachers had been employed to teach each class, but on the other hand with black schools, teachers who did not have particularly good skills were taught, and all the teachers would also be black. One of the most famous cases of segregation that was brought to public attention was that of the Linda Brown case.
Thanks to her good grades, Ruby is chosen to be a pioneer in breaking down the walls of segregation. Through her entire first school year with white children, this brave little black girl is escorted by four federal marshals through a crowd of angry white protestors in front of the school. Miss Henry, Ruby’s teacher from Boston, works with Ruby since none of the regular teachers will have anything to do with her. Through the hard work of the people who told Ruby to attend the white school and through the determination of Ruby, Miss Henry, and Mr. and Mrs. Bridges, Ruby overcame discrimination, racism, prejudice, stereotyping, and educational equalities.
The case of brown v. board of education was one of the biggest turning points for African Americans to becoming accepted into white society at the time. Brown vs. Board of education to this day remains one of, if not the most important cases that African Americans have brought to the surface for the better of the United States. Brown v. Board of Education was not simply about children and education (Silent Covenants pg 11); it was about being equal in a society that claims African Americans were treated equal, when in fact they were definitely not. This case was the starting point for many Americans to realize that separate but equal did not work. The separate but equal label did not make sense either, the circumstances were clearly not separate but equal. Brown v. Board of Education brought this out, this case was the reason that blacks and whites no longer have separate restrooms and water fountains, this was the case that truly destroyed the saying separate but equal, Brown vs. Board of education truly made everyone equal.
...aces, however, when they look at the same classroom about sixty years ago they will find it less diversified. Now, people can see African American children play with the children of white people. There are children who are of mixed race, when back then these children would be shunned by both sides. The children are able to play, become friends, and be happy. They are able to have a life where they do not have to worry about getting off the street just because a white person is passing by. They do not have to worry about moving to the back just because a white person has arrived. This would not have been the case sixty years ago. This place where children of all races are able to enjoy each other’s company was the result of many years of effort and blood, not only by one person but by many courageous individuals who wanted to create a better future for their people.
“In 1950, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People asked a group of African-American parents that included Oliver Brown to attempt to enroll their children in all-white schools, with the expectation that they would be turned away”(NAACP). Since Oliver Brown’s daughter was turned away from the all-white school four blocks from her home she had to walk a fairly far distance to catch the bus to her all black school. “Separate free schools shall be established for the education of children of African descent; and it shall be unlawful for any colored child to attend any white school, or any white child to attend a colored school”(Missouri 1929). This was no fair to her because she is being forced to go out of her way when there is a school just down the street she could go to, but she can’t because of her skin tone. This is what the start for the education system changing forever was known as Brown vs. Broad of education.
In 1954 September 8th Ruby Bridges was born in Tylertown, Mississippi to the parents of Lucille and Abon Bridges. At the age of 4 Ruby Bridges and her family relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1960 Ruby parents volunteer her to participate in the NAACP New Orleans Color System program. The Program was to have blacks integrated into an all-white elementary school which is called William Frantz Elementary school. Ruby father Abon was very hesitant of his daughter attending the school along with 5 other black students. They all had pass the test to attend William Frantz Elementary school but ruby end up being the only one to attend. Two others of the 6 black students went back to their old school and the other three chose to transfer to another school, leaving ruby to attend by herself. Ruby mother Lucille felt very strongly about her choice to send her daughter off to William Frantz Elementary. She felt it was a great opportunity for better education for her daughter and that it was the first step for all black African American’s children, November 14, 1960 Ruby Bridges first day of school. She was surrounded by officers and her mother on her way to school. Ruby had to march through a crowd of angry white folks who held signs and yell names at her. Over the past four-hundred plus years, racism has plagued the history of American society. The idea that one person is inherently better than another because of the color of their skin has always been present from our founding to today. During the rise of the Civil Rights movement in the mid 1900’s, racism was repeatedly being dealt blows by those brave enough to stand up for the rights they felt belonged to citizens of all shapes and colors. One important event that led to progress for people of color was the desegregation of the schooling systems. Diversity, we define this term today as one of our nation’s most dynamic characteristics in American history. The United States thrives through the means of diversity. However, diversity has not always been a positive component in America; in fact, it took many years for our nation to become accustomed to this broad variety of mixed cultures and social groups. One of the leading groups that were most commonly affected by this, were African American citizens, who were victimized because of their color and race. It wasn’t easy being an African American, back then they had to fight in order to achieve where they are today, from slavery and discrimination, there was a very slim chance of hope for freedom or even citizenship. This longing for hope began to shift around the 1950’s during the Civil Rights Movement, where discrimination still took place yet, it is the time when African Americans started to defend their rights and honor to become freemen like every other citizen of the United States. African Americans were beginning to gain recognition after the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, which declared all people born natural in the United States and included the slaves that were previously declared free. However, this didn’t prevent the people from disputing against the constitutional law, especially the people in the South who continued to retaliate against African Americans and the idea of integration in white schools. Integration in white schools played a major role in the battle for Civil Rights in the South, upon the coming of independence for all African American people in the United States after a series of tribulations and loss of hope.
