Ahhh…freedom! You just left the familial roost, and you are ready to spread your wings. Going away to college, even if it's in the same town and you move out of your parents' home, will bring many changes to your life. Are you ready? The changes can feel great! You are now the one in charge of what you do day in and day out. No more, "Did you do your homework?" or "You need to clean your room," comments from your parent. Now it's time you get to choose whether or not you do your homework. And if you do, you decide when. Yes and when could be at 2a.m.! Clean your room? After spending several weekends at shows with my daughter trying to learn the ropes, supporting my daughter, being a coach, as well as a groom and numerous other things, I have learned that it is not a job for every mom. Below are some tips for survival at the horse shows. Make sure that you have tried on your child's show outfits at least a month in advance and again a week before the first show. Your child's clothes must fit. I am a procrastinator of many things in life and have waited until the last minute to try my child's show clothes on. It makes for a very long night making adjustments yourself or trying to find someone else to make them for you. If you have to buy new clothes, traveling to a shop that sells show clothes probably wasn't in your plans the day before a show. Wash and band or braid your horse the night before. I do not like to get up at 4 a.m. to get a horse ready for a show. Do the main grooming the night before and you will have less to do the following morning. Make sure you put a sleazy and blanket on your horse before you return him to his stall. Pack everything you need for the show the night before. If you have a trailer with a dressing room, pack the trailer with all your goodies. Make a list of all the items you will need and check them off as you pack and place the items in the trailer. The topic was taught in a non-lab class titled Biology for Survival (taught in Montclair State University (then Montclair State College)). The class was informative on a number of levels, dealing with toxins in groundwater, basic information about toxic emissions into the air (which end up entering the earth that we stand upon, assuming that we don't breathe them into our lungs first) and touching upon their dispersion by way of weather patterns that carry everything from tannic acid (produced by rotting leaves) to heavy metals and their effect on unprotected steel bits. How does that affect "modern man"? There are some pundits who argue about biodiversity of species and there are those who hesitate to explore the oceans because of the dollar-value cost of doing so, but who find, upon exploration of the traditional fishing areas find that the catch of specific species is either non-existent or barely existent as compared with what they were a generation ago (my father's a recreational fisherman who's shared information in this respect).
