Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a tragic love story. Romeo can be blamed for Mercutio’s death because he didn’t fight his own battle. Mercutio can be blamed for his own death because he tried to fight Romeo’s battle. Tybalt can also be blamed because he was the first one to start the fight. You can blame many people for Mercutio’s death, but Tybalt is most to blame followed by himself and then Romeo.
Romeo is the least to blame because his intention was for no one to get hurt. When Tybalt challenged Romeo he didn’t want to fight because Tybalt was Juliet’s cousin. Romeo’s actions then caused Mercutio to fight Tybalt instead. While Mercutio and Tybalt were fighting Romeo got in between so they would stop. Tybalt then stabs Mercutio from under Romeo’s arm causing him to die.
You can blame Mercutio for his own death because he picked a fight with Tybalt. When Romeo didn’t accept Tybalt’s challenge, Mercutio was confused and angry. Mercutio could’ve walked away with Romeo but instead he became so angry that he told Tybalt, “Good King of Cats, nothing but one of your nine lives, that I mean to make bold withal, and, as you shall use me hereafter, dry-beat the rest of the eight. During the party at the Capulet house Tybalt saw Romeo and wanted to kill him, but Lord Capulet wouldn’t let him. This hurt Tybalt’s pride and made it control his actions. While Romeo was turning away Tybalt said, “Boy your words can’t excuse the harm you’ve done to me. So now turn and draw your sword!” (3.1.60) This made Mercutio so angry that he provoked Tybalt. Tybalt then let his pride overcome him and then he started fighting Mercutio.
