Combs English 9 6/5/2024 Romeo and Juliet Final Summative In his book Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare characterizes Romeo as inconsistent and rash to show that love can make you make bad decisions. Romeo is shown as inconsistent in showing that love might make you make bad decisions. Romeo at the start of the book was in love with Rosaline and could not stop thinking about her, but that all changed when he met Juliet. This is shown when Shakespeare writes, “Did my heart love till now? Foreswear it, sight, For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (53; 1.5 lines 59-60). He could not stop thinking about Rosaline before, but when he laid his eyes upon Juliet, he forgot all about Rosaline. I believe that love made him do this because he believed that without Juliet there is no world, so he killed himself as he felt there was nothing else left for him to do in his life. This can be supported when Shakespeare writes, “There is no world without Verona walls but purgatory, torture, hell itself” (141; 3.3 lines 18-19). Shakespeare symbolizes Verona as Juliet because he has said before that heaven is where Juliet lives in Acts 3; 3.3; lines 31-32. He uses this symbolism to show that Juliet is the world to Romeo and without her, there is but hell, which is why Romeo decides to take his life. If he was not inconsistent and fell in love with Juliet, he might not have made the bad decision to kill himself. Romeo is also characterized as rash, showing that for love you might make bad decisions. Romeo is someone who makes countless bad decisions that involve Juliet.
