Romeo and Juliet is a play about two young lovers in 14th century Verona, Italy, who were part of two different belligerent families. Because of this, it causes the two to sneak around and disclose their undying love for each other. Romeo eventually kills Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, in order to get revenge for Mercutio, Romeo's best friend. Due to this event, Romeo is banished from Verona, Italy. He and Juliet fall into an intense depressions and Juliet is soon forced to marry Paris. The day before she puts herself into a deep sleep making everyone think she is dead. The friar then says he is lucky because he won’t be killed, but Romeo thinks otherwise. He declares that it will be unbearable torture to be forced away from Juliet, his “true love”. He shows his agony by saying, “Tis torture and not Mercy. Heaven is here, where Juliet lives.” This quote shows how irrational teenage lovers can be. Romeo says that he would rather be dead than to be banished because he thinks he loves Juliet. This shows that teens make irresponsible decisions based on their idea of love. He only sees her as his one true love and that if she is dead he must be so to, “Here's to my love [drinks] o'true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. This with a kiss I die.” You could argue that Romeo understands true love because his love for Mercutio was so strong that when he died Romeo risked death to avenge him “This day’s black fate on moe days doth depend: This but begins the woe others must end.” This could be considered as understanding true love but this is few and far between in this play.
