Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a story of two young lovers. These two hearts, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet belong to feuding families. The family feud causes them to keep their love a secret and therefore only Romeo, Juliet, Benvolio, the Nurse and Friar Lawrence know of their love. Romeo and Juliet are able to look past the feud and let themselves fall in mad love with the other. They let themselves do almost anything for the other and at times it seems like too much to do, even for the one they love. Although fate and character traits play a key role in the play, ultimately Rome and Juliet’s personal choices lead to their downfall.Fate originates all of the conflicts in Romeo and Juliet, from when they met until they die. Romeo is in love with Rosaline at the very beginning of the story and has just found out that she has taken the vow of chastity. Meanwhile Lord Capulet has given County Paris Juliet’s hand in marriage if he can wait until she is sixteen. The Capulets have a party so that Juliet and the Count can meet and he can then woo her. When Romeo and Juliet first meet they are at the Capulet party, which Romeo sneaks into. They fall in love at first sight without realizing that they are enemies. Fate brings them together and it is fate that they are enemies. Thought the play, these lovers go through many obstacles that range from arranging a wedding and finding a time to meet to Juliet trying to get out of marrying Paris. The entire time fate is tossing them around. Romeo realizes this after he kills Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, in a brawl. At first, Romeo does not want to fight because Romeo and Juliet are already married at this time and he knows that they are cousins. Tybalt asks for a brawl from Romeo but Mercutio fights instead. Mercutio gets killed by Tybalt and that is what makes Romeo mad and fight Tybalt. At the end of the fight when Romeo kills Tybalt and then realizes what he has done he yells out, “O, I am Fortune’s fool!” (Shakespeare.3.1.143). And he and Juliet both are little toys for fate. But, they never give up on their love.Romeo and Juliet’s traits cause them to go along with their fate and contributes to their downfall.
Romeo and Juliet is widely known to be a tragedy, but what caused the atrocity for which it is so renowned? Some may argue fate was to blame for Romeo’s and Juliet’s deaths, that the situations these young lovers faced were depicted as being out of their control. Could Romeo have refused to attend the Capulet masque? Was Romeo destined to duel the raging Tybalt? Did Romeo and Juliet truly have to kill themselves? If one considers the specific circumstances and causes of these situations, the fact that all scenarios are the result of choice rather than chance, and the notion that the characters were never left without options, only one conclusion can be determined. It was unarguably the decisions made by characters, not those made by fate, that were responsible for the tragedy in Romeo and Juliet.
The play Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare. Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet are two "star-crossed lovers". Their families are sworn enemies. When Romeo, Benvolio and others go to a Capulet party in the beginning is fate. Another event is when Capulet moves the wedding of Juliet and Count Paris up one day. A final event is when Romeo finds Juliet in the tomb. If Romeo had come a few minutes later he would've found Juliet awake. These events affect the tragic ending of the play.
Romeo and Juliet, a play by William Shakespeare, is about the tragedy of two lovers. The two lovers are from families that hate each other. Romeo is a Montague, whilst Juliet is a Capulet. Romeo had loved another girl, only to find she was to become a nun. He then went to a party hosted by the Capulets, and fell in love with Juliet. He met up with her, as she also liked him, and they eventually got married. Their happiness did not last long, however, as Tybalt, a man from Juliet’s house, killed Mercutio, a relative to the prince and Romeo’s friend. Romeo then proceeded to kill Tybalt, which lead to his banishment. Juliet put herself in a death-like state to be with Romeo, who found out and actually killed himself. Juliet
In the fair city of Verona, two rival families, the Montagues and Capulets were involved in a nasty family feud that goes back years before any of the members were born. Even the townspeople were involved in the dispute, because the families were always fighting in the streets and causing disturbances. They disrupted the streets of Verona and even Prince Escalus tried to break up the fighting. They were given a warning, by him that another public fight would result in death. While this was occurring, Romeo, (a Montague) the main character, was getting over his last love, Rosaline, and was very upset. Juliet of the Capulet household had just been introduced to a wealthy young man, Paris, whom her parents wished her to marry. Yet she did not love him. Romeo goes to a party in an effort to forget about Rosaline. At this party he met Juliet, and immediately fell in love with her. He later finds out that she is a Capulet, the rival family of the Montagues. He decides that he loves her anyway and they confess their love for each other during the very famous "balcony scene" in which they agreed to secretly marry the next day. Friar Lawrence agreed to marry them in an effort to end the feuding between the families. Unfortunately, the fighting gets worse and Mercutio (Montague) a good friend of Romeo ends up in a fight with Tybalt (Capulet), Juliet's cousin. Tybalt killed Mercutio, which caused Romeo to kill Tybalt in an angry rage. For this, Romeo is banished from Verona. At the same time, the Capulet's were planning Juliet's marriage to Paris. Juliet didn't want to marry this man so she arranges with Friar Lawrence to fake her own death with a sleeping potion that would make everyone think that she was dead. Friar Lawrence promised to send word to Romeo to meet her when the potion wears off and to rescue her to Mantua, where Romeo was currently staying. There they would live happily ever after. Unfortunately, Romeo didn't receive the message on time and upon hearing of her "death" went to Juliet's tomb where he drinks poison and dies. When Juliet's potion wears off, she wakes to find her lover's dead corpse. She then proceeds to stab herself with Romeo's dagger. The two families find the bodies and with their shared sorrow, finally make peace with each other.
Belief is a fickle thing. You really don’t get any physical benefit or lack thereof simply for belief. Psychologically, however, belief can be a very powerful thing. It can also be so in ways that we are simply incapable of understanding with our limited knowledge. But in any case, I would have to say that simply believing in fate is not enough to avoid physical consequences, but can occasionally lift some psychological burden off one’s metaphysical shoulders. This theme comes time and time again in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The characters in the play often believe strongly in fate, using it to avoid psychological burden, but more often than not, their belief is in vain.
Fate. How does a small four-lettered, one-syllable word play such an important role in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet? Fate is “the development of events outside a person’s control, regarded as predetermined by a supernatural power.”, however, in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, fate is reality; fate is always causing ruckus that is forced to be faced. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, it appears that the relationship between Romeo and Juliet is determined completely by fate and teaches somebody that fate can be the cause of happiness but it can also be the cause of disappointment. Romeo and Juliet thought that the twist of fate to bring them together was the best thing that could have happened to them... but was it really?
... an understanding of what establishes the guest-host relationship helps one to recognise how significant the role of xenia is. Being a good host and offering hospitality would lead to the uncovering of a stranger’s identity, which is seen during Odysseus’ homecoming. This plays a major role in the epic due to the fact that Odysseus must reveal his identity to reclaim his home and rid it of the suitors that have moved into his palace. Due to Telemachus’ hospitality towards Odysseus when he is disguised as a beggar, Odysseus is able to take the necessary steps to secure his home, determine who should be punished and take up the bow used to kill those who defied him and his wife. Hospitality is essential in creating this vital moment within the epic and what it has been built up to. Xenia defined who a person truly was and helped Odysseus eventually make his way home.
As a child did you ever dream of having a relationship like Romeo and Juliet? Believed to be one of the most romantic loved stories ever wrote, the question still arises as to whether it was really fate that killed them at the end, or their continuous bad choices throughout the play that ultimately ended in death? In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, throughout the story they both made many detrimental decisions that have always been long debated as whether it was fate or just bad choices. Believing in fate has been deliberated for many years and to whether or not fate played a role in what ultimately happens to Romeo and Juliet or could their poor choices have contributed more than fate alone.
Mental illness stigma is an issue that plagues many members of society. The consequences are not well known by the public and include, but are not limited to; family discord, job discrimination and social rejection (Feldman & Crandall, 2007). The most common stigma is the assumption every mentally ill person is dangerous to themselves and others. There are many conflicting articles both supporting and refuting this claim.
These lines foreshadow that there will be many impediments keeping them apart and eventually killing them both. It might be thought that the tragic ending is caused by them choosing to love each other. However, if fate does not bring them together in the first place, they will never have the opportunity to establish their love. Romeo and Juliet are affected by their choices and fate right from the beginning. Romeo’s actions and chance also cause the chaos in Romeo and Mercutio’s fight scene with Tybalt.
He cried. May the gods bring riches on this house.”(Homer 28). This is a key component of xenia because it shows that not only the host has to show it but the guest as well. This also true that when Odysseus was in the cave with the cyclops he as a guest did everything he could to show how how Xenia was important to him not only as a host but as a guest as well. He showed that the host was pretty bad but decided to keep going with the fact that he need to be a real guest no matter the circumstances. On the other side of being kind as a guest the suitors show the opposite of that, in that they as a guest go into a Odysseus's home and decide to play with his servant, wanted to fight for the love of Penelope and destroy his
While majority of the women are enslaved, imprisoned or forced to enter this profession, there are some women who enter this profession simply because they enjoy such acts and believe that it is a good way of making a lot of money easily. On a very personal front, such a profession is not wrong morally and ethically to them. They believe that just like other professions, prostitution is another profession that pays them in return for the services that are provided by them. According to these women, they work hard and their owners reward them with money in return for their hard work. These women believe that their job is just like any other job – the boss pays his or her worker for working hard and getting the job done. To these women, there is nothing wrong with this profession. They believe that their customers only require casual sex and it is their responsibility to entertain them since it is their profession. “If this is right, then engaging casually in an activity that has the potential for romantic significance needs not destroy that activity 's romantic significance on other occasions. If we accept this, then we would need a separate argument to explain why casual sex destroys sex even though casual eating does not destroy eating” (Moen). However, the entire society views such women with disrespect and for them; such professions are immoral and unethical. The society believes that these women are
Romeo and Juliet is a romantic love story about a young lad named Romeo who has fallen in love with Lady Juliet, but is unable to marry her because of a long-lasting family feud. The play ends in the death of both these characters and the reunion of the friendship between the families. Romeo is in love with Juliet, and this is a true, passionate love (unlike the love Paris has for her or the love Romeo had for Rosaline) that nothing can overcome, not even the hatred between their two families that is the reason for the death of their two children. Throughout the play, Shakespeare thoroughly explores the themes of both true love and false love and hatred. Without either of these themes, the play would loose its romantic touch and probably would not be as famous as it is today.
Those who suffer from mental health conditions are often plagued by stigma and discrimination in society. Stigma can be defined as a negative stereotype that causes behaviours which lead to alienation and the creation of barriers that affect a completely satisfying life. The stigma can cause many negative consequences that can influence a person’s treatment, recovery and ability to obtain proper housing and jobs. Society should spend more time educating people on the importance of ending the stigma surrounding mental health, so this disadvantaged group can have a chance of leading a successful and happy life. To express the importance of ending the stigma, the following paragraphs will discuss my personal experiences with mental illness, the
From a personal perspective, the stigma associated with mental illness is largely attributed to the lack of mental health awareness within our educational systems and communities. Often these individuals in hindsight lack empathetic understanding and foster negative attitudes regarding a person suffering from a mental illness and view them as of irrelevance due to their abnormal behavior. The stigma of mental illness is problematic and frequently contributes to discriminatory behavior from those who lack the mental capacity to recognize that these individuals have difficulties functioning in their day-to-day activities.
