As American actor and producer Timothy Olyphant said “Sometimes, people aren't as consciously aware of their decisions as they should be”. This statement also applies to Romeo and Juliet, a play by William Shakespeare. Romeo is often not as conscious of his decisions as he should be. He also weighs his feelings when making a decision more than common sense or reason. This drastically influenced his life, and the wrong turn that it took. The critical choices that Romeo makes are most responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because he makes his choices based on emotion even when he knows it will end up badly for him, and when he is too ignorant to know.
Romeo chose to kill Tybalt very quickly and without thinking it through when he

When the friar hears that Romeo wants to be married to Juliet he inquires if “Is Rosaline, that thou dodst love so dear. Soon forsaken?(2.3 70-71). When the friar says that the person Romeo used to “love so dear soon forsaken” he is saying that Romeo is very emotional and has the tendency to quickly grow strong feelings for somebody. This applies to both Juliet and Rosaline. Romeo doesn't think his decisions through, in the case of both Rosaline and Juliet he became very attached to them in a shoot amount of time. He doesn't use common sense and only uses his emotions when making a critical choice for example he didn't stop and think if it would be a good idea to marry somebody he met the night before. When Romeo finds out that Juliet is dead he assers that “Well Juliet I will lie with thee tonight”(5.1, 37). When Romeo says “I will lie with thee” he is referring to him going to Juliet's tomb and killing himself so he can be with her. This is another instance of Romeo not thinking things through and acting on emotion. He is not taking the time to think the situation through and he is going straight to the extreme. This identifies the fact that when Romeo makes critical choices without thinking things through it ends up badly for him. In this instance it results in the death of both him, and Juliet. If he had thought his decision through and gone to the …show more content…
When Romeo was in Mantua and his servant comes with a message he queries “Oh true apothecary, these drugs are quick. and with a kiss I die (5,3 119-120). When Romeo asks if there are “letters from the friar, and How doth my lady” he is implying that he does not know of the plan and that the friar has not gotten in touch with him. If he knew about the plan he would not ask how Juliet is doing because he would know she is pretending to be dead. If Romeo knew how his choice to kill himself would pan out then he would have under no circumstances done it. But because he did not understand the consequences of his actions a tragedy occurred. When Romeo was in the tomb and about to kill himself, he bellowed “Oh true apothecary, these drugs are quick. and with a kiss I die (5,3 119-120). When Romeo says “and with a kiss I die” he is emphasizing the fact that the choices he has made led him to end his life. He cannot bear to continue living if he does not have Juliet by his side. He does not know that Juliet is alive and well right next to him, and when she sees him dead she will kill herself. If Romeo had known the consequences of critical choice, and this proved fatal for both him and Juliet. He would have chosen to not end his life, and he would have been able to live happily with Juliet. If Romeo had been more aware of what the outcomes of his choices
(HOOK) How can one grave mistake made by a character eventually accumulate and have an immense impact on the plot of a storyline? Depending on the piece of literature, certain characters can create setbacks through their actions and choices. (CI) Likewise, a pair of star-crossed lovers face challenging obstacles based on certain decisions made by characters. (GS1) The protagonist of the play, Romeo Montague, generates various dilemmas because of the severe choices he makes, especially his decision to kill Tybalt. (GS2) Meanwhile, Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend, is another character who causes impactful changes in the play with his overdramatic personality. (GS3) Additionally, the character Friar Laurence ultimately makes the most drastic choice
We have now read both Pyramus and Thisbe, and Romeo and Juliet. The question we have yet to answer is what has a greater impact on what happened, destiny, or personal choice? We believe that personal choice affected the characters more because they chose to fall in love, Romeo and Juliet rushed into marriage, Pyramus and Thisbe left home on their own terms, and in both stories, the main characters decided to commit suicide. This is something that cannot be determined by the stars, your choices determine what happens, not some mystical prophecy. Though that is what we believe, it is also believed that destiny has a greater impact because they were doomed from the stars.
When Romeo is leaving Juliet's chamber and climbs down to the ground to leave Juliet sees him as pale: "O God, I have an ill-divining soul. Methinks I see thee now, thou art so low. As one dead in the bottom of a tomb"(Rom. 3.5.54-56). Juliet describes Romeo as looking dead when he is descending from the tower. In the scene Juliet is sensing something wrong but doesn't think much of it and brushes it off. She then after goes back to saying goodbye to Romeo. This shows that their love has caused Juliet to not think of the uneasy feeling she had felt. The purpose of this scene connects to the message of Shakespeare because it shows that in the end they both have killed themselves due to the fact that they love each other so much. The two lovers feel they can not live without each other and cause them to make the irrational choice of taking their lives. Another scene foreshadowing the two lovers death due to their love for each other is shown in a quote of dramatic irony. Romeo is begging Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet : “Do thou but close our hands with holy words, Then love-devouring death do what he dare” (Rom.2.6.6-7). Romeo is saying in this quote that as long as they are married then love-destroying death can do whatever it wants to them both. He is prioritizing his love for Juliet and her being his wife over what could happen to them in the future. Being so in
...east, By some vile forfeit of untimely death”(shakespeare act 1 scene 5). which he's basically saying i will wait and see what fate has in store for me,also he saying he's destined to die.I think romeo believes in fate to much that he thinks that everything revolves around fate, even though some of it could've been his fault and other peoples faults.like when mercutio died (shakespeare act 3 scene 1) tybalt caused the fight not fate he could of just let it go but he persisted on fighting which caused the death of mercutio.Romeo also believed in fate to much he let it control his life,it was like a book to him like he had to follow code.As a result it got him into bad situations,in turn caused his own demise. If romeo believed in fate so much than he should of realized that him and Juliet weren't meant to be. these are examples why romeo is at fault for his own demise.
Most importantly, Romeo’s poor choices and decisions lead to the tragedy of the drama. From the beginning of the story Romeo reveals his immaturity and ill-equipped emotions. His first mistake reveals itself when he claims to be deeply depressed. Romeo claims that he feels like “sinking ‘under love’s heavy burden’,” (Dupler). At this point Romeo has succumbed to his emotions, due to the fact that a girl named Rosaline refuses to reciprocate his love for her. Romeo’s friends Benvolio and Mercutio “urge him to stop philosophizing about his lost love and to seek another young lady as a new object of his affections” (Dupler).Romeo now demonstrates that he seems incapable of listening to his friends’ suggestions and chooses to continue in a juvenile state of depression. Romeo makes another fatal decision when he nurtures an undeniably damned relationship. Romeo admits that he still loves Juliet once her lineage appears as Capulet when he says, “Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My life is my foes debt” (1.5.115). Romeo irresponsibly supports the idea of a relationship between himself and Juliet only because “The young hero is simply shifting his attention to a more receptive subject as he responds to the erotic spurring implicit in his name” (...
Life is filled with difficult situations and tough choices to make. The question is, should we choose to make them ourselves? Some people feel it's best to do things alone, while others do not. For example, most of the characters in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare that are analyzed in the text, “What’s the Rush?: Young Brains Cause Doomed Love” by Lexi Tucker, do not consider other’s opinions at all. However, the opinions of people who love us positively affect our choices so it would be smart to consider them in most cases, but not in those that are very personal.
Romeo’s numerous rash decisions demonstrates his great impulsiveness. Romeo at first grieves over his unreciprocated love for Rosaline, but after he sees Juliet; he forgets about Rosaline entirely. His hastiness leads him to make decisions that are not intelligent or to his benefit. Shortly after meeting Juliet, he asks her to “exchange [her] faithful vow” for his ( 2.2.132). Romeo’s recklessness is evident that he does not think before he makes important decisions; prompting him to propose to Juliet just hours after their first meeting. Yet the morning before, Romeo was suffering from depression because he could never have his Rosaline. After what seems like a lifetime of loving Rosaline and promising to never love anyone but her, Romeo sees Juliet and instantaneously all his thoughts of Rosaline vanish. Romeo becomes infatuated with Juliet, with whom he exchanges less then fifty words before “falling in love.” The next morning he begs Friar L...
The initial relationship between Romeo and Juliet is based on impulse. Romeo immediately chooses a lover without thinking about her. Romeo mopes about his past love. Romeo’s past love is Rosaline. When Benvolio suggests to Romeo that he can Benvolio suggests that Romeo learn to forget Rosaline "By giving liberty unto thine eyes; / Examine other beauties"(8), Romeo says that Rosaline is the fairest of all and that he can never forget her (8). Romeo thinks that Rosaline is a love of his life and He cannot live without Rosaline. He tries to find Rosaline in every girl he sees. This action -by Romeo shows that he considers love in the emotional way. On the other hand, Romeo forgets his first love when he first sees Juliet in Capulet party. Romeo tells to Juliet that
If Romeo didn’t have the Apothecary's poison, Romeo still would have had many other options for killing himself. The friar is another character who played a role in the ultimate deaths of Romeo and Juliet by helping Juliet to fake her own death and escape marriage to Paris. However, even if the friar had chosen to not help Juliet with this plan, it would not likely have saved Juliet’s or Romeo’s life. Juliet’s refusal to marry Paris enraged her father and would likely have gotten her killed for betraying her
...te pilot, now at once run on / The dashing rocks thy seasick, weary bark. / Here’s to my love! / O true apothecary, / Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” Romeo says that its miserable be alive while his love is dying. He takes the poison just to die, thinking Juliet’s also dead. This was the poorest choice he has ever made because if he had waited a little longer, then he would have seen that Juliet is alive. Romeo’s impulse got the best of him.
Romeo has a tendency to act before he thinks or does not think at all. An example would be Romeo meeting Juliet to only kiss her a few minutes after they met. He states that ¨O, then dear saint, let lips do what hands do! They pray; grant thou, lest faith turn to despair”(2.43.105)and then kisses her. This makes Juliet believe that Romeo is the one because this is her first kiss due to her age. Her first kiss will probably will mean a lot because of her religion that ¨ties” the knot on juleitś love life and makes them desperate for each other. Subsequently, Romeo and Juliet agree to get married on the second day they met. This will push their beliefs to the extent that they will kill themselves if they can’t see each other. Lastly for this claim, is that Romeo just kills himself when he believes that Juliet is dead at Act 5 even though there is no solid proof that she is dead. He instantly believes that she is dead and doesn’t await for a talk with Friar Laurence even though the Friar made this plan. Romeo’s personality trait of being impatient has led this situation to be fairly
Both Romeo and Juliet are responsible for both of them being dead and it is a flaw. Romeo and Juliet live in two different worlds. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. Both families do not like each other. So from the beginning that was the first flaw that they both had. Juliet could have done a lot instead of doing half of the things she did. Juliet's tragic flaw is her loyalty to Romeo. Juliet was a Capulet and a conscientious child. She was shy and loyal in the beginning of the play/story. “Well, do not swear. Although I joy in thee,I have no joy of this contract tonight. It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden,Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be Ere one can say 'It lightens.' Sweet, good night. This bud of love, by summer's ripening breath, May prove a beauteous flower when next we meet.Good night, good night. As sweet repose and rest Come to thy heart as that within my breast.” In this quote she is saying how much she loves Romeo, but she thinks it is
All of these decisions lead to Romeo and Juliet’s downfall and eventually their deaths. Rushed decision making sometimes seems good, but not thinking out decisions can lead to major consequences and even death as in Romeo and Juliet. Because the world moves so fast now hasty decisions are more common, but this is a mistake since these decisions are often detrimental. Hasty decision making is what separated Romeo and Juliet, they were young and showed their immaturity in the hasty decisions they made. When this lesson is not learned the audience sees the consequences that may result from this lesson not learned, also causing decadence of those who are oblivious to this lesson. As Friar Laurence admonished, “Wisely and slow, they stumble that run
What do you think caused a great impact on all the characters in both stories? Their destiny or personal choices? In the two texts The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe the characters were impacted more by their own decisions. The characters decided their actions that lead to very dreadful consequences. In the text Pyramus and Thisbe decided to run away together. Secondly, after Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time they immediately decide to marry one another. Lastly, a decision that affected the characters greatly is when Juliet quickly decided to drink the potion. All these self-inflicted decisions impacted the traumatic endings of these texts.
Have you ever thought, was it personal choice or destiny that led to the deaths in Romeo and Juliet or the deaths in “Pyramus and Thisbe”? Personal choice has a greater impact on the characters in Romeo and Juliet and "Pyramus and Thisbe".
