Death Penalty in Romeo and Juliet Did you know that the death penalty has been banned in Italy since 1889? In the book of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the death penalty has been used as a source of punishment to those that broke the rules of Verona. The death penalty is not a good way to handle those that have caused violence, some criminals believe that they will not be caught and be held accountable for their actions, and there is no real evidence that the death penalty deters crime. In Romeo and Juliet, the death penalty was not a great source to punish those that have committed acts of violence. In the story, Romeo and Juliet, Act 3, scene 3, it states “For exile hath more terror in his sight, much more than death. In the same act and scene, it states, “Hence banished is banish’d from the world, and world’s exile is death; then banished is death mis-term'd” In act 3, scene 4, it says “O, tell me, Frair, tell me, in what vile part of this anatomy doth my name lodge? In the story, when Prince Escules steps in to stop the families from fighting, he gives them a warning saying that he’ll convict them of death. In Romeo and Juliet, Act 1, scene 1, the Capulets and Montagues households fight in the streets of Verona, Prince Escules tells them to stop fighting or “your lives shall pay the forfeit of peace.” The 2 families are warned of death if they continue to be hostile and violent to each other, It’s also how some people are warned about their punishments if they keep on doing the things they are doing, like fighting or murdering. In real life, people fight all the time, but when someone commits a serious crime, murder, genocide, or treason, they are convicted of death. When they are younger, they are usually taught about the severity of the punishment, like giving them a warning about committing
