As part of an English class project, I watched the film Romeo and Juliet directed in 1968 by Franco Zeffirelli. The film was based off the original play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare during the Italian Renaissance.Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story of two young star crossed lovers that are kept apart from one another due to a family feud. This feud has gone on for years and caused the two teens Romeo and Juliet to die to be together. Leonard Whiting (Romeo) played the young lovesick Montague who tries to conquer every woman but finds himself lost and heart broken when his beloved Juliet dies. Olivia Hussey (Juliet) Romeos love has her own share of suffering when she was kept away from the one she loves and is being forced to marry the one she hates Robert Bisacco …show more content…

This is effective because if you were just to watch this film and not read the play you would not know how much Paris loved Juliet or is character in general. There was also a big difference which I did not like, in the dual between Mercutio (John McEnery) and Tybalt (Michael York) within the film. This is because in the film the dual looked more as a play fight and not as serious as in the original play. What I do like about the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet was that Zeffirelli kept the plot the same as the original by William Shakespeare, but he moved to the plot to fast. This is because when Zeffirelli cut out some important scenes that made the plot vaguer and not too fast. If this film of Romeo and Juliet was made now in 2015 it would proubley be different, because of cretin laws that were put into place when making a movie.
