In the play “Romeo and Juliet”, by William Shakespeare, the author reveals that the two young lovers defy their parents wishes and arrange a way to be married on Monday behind their backs which leads to not only Romeo and Juliet’s death but four other family members. The behavior of these adolescents can be explained by neuroscientist Sarah-Jayne Blakemore and her MRI research. Sarah-Jayne Blakemore’s thesis in adolescent development sheds light on some of the nonsensical decision making in shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, as characters certainly face the unpredictable mood swings, self-consciousness, and impulse control issues she describes.
Due to the unpredictable mood swings that Sarah-Jayne Blakemore describes, it causes Romeo and Juliet to end up committing suicide. In the story Romeo was distressed and had suicidal thoughts because of Rosalyn, but Mercutio and Benvolio took Romeo to a party and Romeo saw Juliet , “what lady’s that,... For example, Romeo decides to jump over the capulet wall just to see juliet and tell her how he feels. Romeo says,” I’d rather die from their hatred than have my death postponed if you don't love me” on lines 86-87. This relates to the topic because romeo should have stopped and thought about the consequences but instead just jumped the wall to see her. Another example, when juliet falls in love with romeo and takes things further than expected without thinking about the consequences that may occur. Romeo and Juliet take things too far too fast without thinking about it when in reality they both should have just thought about it and taken it
