Since her first album, 19, she has come a strong, yet sensitive icon in pop culture. Her career had a small start in early 2008, but she quickly shot to the top. In October of 2008, Adele was on Saturday Night Live, after which her music made the Top 40 list immediately and the #1 spot by the following day (Biography.com). Adele was a key artist and figure when her album 21 debuted. Over the years Adele has shown that her music tells a story of her background, along with her present and future. The song, “Rolling in the Deep”, holds a meaning that describes not only her own life, but also the life of her audience. She had been dating, long term with a man, and they fell out of love. This came as a devastating blow as she had explained that he had a love for many sophisticated things that opened her eyes to the world (Sanderson). Her breakup brought a feeling of failure, that despite her trying she could not keep him. Although there was a grieving period, it came after Paul and Adele completed the passion written within “Rolling in the Deep”. Adele reportedly said, “Let’s write a ballad,” but Epworth contested saying, “Absolutely not! I want to write a fierce tune” (Sanderson). Deep within writing this album the heartbreak occurred, which sparked a personal song writing streak for the young Adele. “Rolling in the Deep” is the epitome of her album 21. With fierceness built up inside, Adele and Paul Epworth were able to write the #1 song in the 2011 popular music charts.
