According to me, Professionalism is a conduct of a service provider for the welfare of the public by using his/her expert skills and knowledge, putting public’s interest as a top priority, adhering to strict code of ethics, building a relationship of trust and respect by the means of active listening, communicating effectively and educating public to help them make appropriate decisions.
Professionalism plays very important role in healthcare profession. As a healthcare provider we are building good patient-doctor relationship and assuring patients for their confidence in us and in our treatment. Therefore, it is my duty to represent myself in a professional manner, use my expertise for the benefit of patients, knowing my limitations, complying
patients’ demands and maintaining their confidentiality. Additionally, professionalism also includes, interacting empathically with patients and make them comfortable in the office. Further, being accountable for my work, giving respect to my patients, creating positive work environment and team spirit would also be part of my work etiquette. Moreover, it is my responsibility to consistently enhance my knowledge and clinical skills to give quality care to the patients. To conclude, professionalism is all about how well we connect to our patients, listen to their concerns, explain the best possible solution for their treatment and use our skills for wellbeing of patients.

These factors are highly valued, as they promote holistic care rendered to patients. Professionalism is defined as one's conduct at work. The quality of professionalism is not restricted to those in occupations with high level of education or high earnings. Any worker regardless of their level of education or occupation should demonstrate a high level of this trait (About.com, 2013). Acting professionally at workplace makes others think of you as reliable, respectful, and competent.
To name a few examples of professionalism in the workplace - is being on time, limiting absences, can communicate effectively, dress in suitable clothes, and shows a willingness to work with others. Having a positive attitude in stressful setting is another great example. Professionalism will show in your actions and people around you will notice it. Once people notices your display of professionalism, you will gain respect and trust in your workplace. However, if you dig deeper, all the examples of professionalism mentioned above, it all boils down into one reason- attitude. It is an attitude to show up at work early, and not miss work. It is an attitude that you can communicate effectively. It is an attitude that you can willingly work with others.
