Introduction
The past 50 years have witnessed a decrease in road-related fatalities and accidents in Australia; however, there is still a large quantity of people who are injured or killed in road accidents across Australia. Both federal and state governments have developed and created strategies and operations to ensure a continuous decrease in the statistics associated with road-related accidents and fatalities in Australia. These strategies and operations have been able to ensure that there is public knowledge of the statistical data, that there is a decrease in road-related fatalities and accidents in Australia and create a safer driving experience for the Australia citizen.

The Compilation of Road Accident Statistics in Australia
Since 1997, the compilation of road accident information in New South Wales has been a paperless system. Information related to a road accident is uploaded into the Computerised Operational Policing System which, when substantiated, is transferred to the Centre for Road Safety’s Traffic Accident Database System. There are both daily and nightly automatic computer procedures which ensure that there are no irregularities or miscalculations in the data collected. Where there are fatal road accidents, a primary report is used to assist the compilation of a fatal road accident database in which people can analyse and monitor road-related accident information and statistics.

...00 Australian citizens (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2014). Application of road accident statistics in any manner ensures that each individual who uses these passenger vehicles can be safe; whether it be through an operation to decrease driving while under the influence (e.g. Random Breath Testing) or through the use of speed cameras and the application of double demerit points on holidays (Roads and Maritime, 2013).
It is modern knowledge and application of mathematics and statistics that has allowed for insights and information to be achieved and made public knowledge. It has been instrumental in the decrease in road-related fatalities in the 21st century; for example, while there were 30.4 road-related fatalities per 100 000 people in 1970, there was a significant decrease to 6.9 per 100 000 people in 2009 (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2013).
