Peace - a single word so powerful and simple that has a major effect in a global aspect that so many yearn for. Many define peace with many words such as serenity, tranquility, unity, and whole, yet it is something that many have yet to experience. This world, mixed with turmoil and great animosity, scrutinizes the beautiful image of global serenity and happiness. One of the major causes of such distress in the world is war. War arises due to hate, envy, greed, and the need for power. Innocent lives and the value of human existence diminishes as fast as people support the idea of war. Envision yourself in the midst of war, struggling to survive, while mourning the loss of everyone you've loved. Do you dare to endure the devastation war conveys? The life of war is not where one has a choice to be a part of, but an unfortunate situation one must overcome. In a addition such unexpectancy can be further proven by Jasmina as she states, “ The worst adversities bring the bounties of hidden strength along with the surprise that even the worst tragedies in life are overcome in the same way that the minor ones are: one step at a time.” (Dervisevic-Cesic) The act of war is not something that arises overnight, yet slowly grows like a creek that becomes a river due to never-ending rainfall. The story, “The River Runs Salt, Runs Sweet” begins describing the life of Jasmina, a teenage girl, who lives in the town of Visegrad, Bosnia, where diversified ethnic races such as Muslims and Serbians, live in serenity and as a whole.
