Rituals are a basic feature of all societies. A ritual is defined as “a sequence of activities involving gestures, words, and objects, performed in a sequestered place, and performed according to a set sequence.” Rituals are performed to uphold the traditions of a community or an individual. Worship rites, holiday parties, brushing your teeth every morning and even a handshake are all forms of rituals and all bear meaning to a community. Rituals also take everyday events and give them a symbolic meaning. Rituals are the same throughout the time in which they are applied. According to Cathy Stucker, “Rituals remind us of what is important and provide a sense of stability and continuity in our lives.” Their actions are repeatable and constant. …show more content…

The Aggie ring is the most recognizable symbol of the Aggie Network. Placing pennies on Sully provides good luck to a student with an upcoming exam. If Reveille barks in class, the class is dismissed. The Big Event, which I had the honor of serving as a Staff Assistant for the last two years, was establish at A&M. It is the largest student-run day of service in the country. Others have seen the good that The Big Event does, and it has now spread to universities around the world. Muster, Silver Taps, the Bonfire Memorial, and the MSC are rituals unique to Texas A&M which honor and remember Aggies of the past. …show more content…

I had just left pref night at kappa and I had no idea what sorority I was going to select that night at the computers. I was torn between two houses and legit couldn’t decide which to go. As I left the doors of Kappa, I had been replaying conversations in my head from that week. Confused, I grabbed my things and headed to the bus to go vote. Waiting in line my attention was drawn to the Kappa house. There was banging, chanting and lights flickering on and off. This Kappa spirit enchanted me. This pref night ritual helped influence my decision to go
