Prom is an overrated rite of passage
Prom is a rite of passage; for young men and women it is a stage of transitioning from teenagers to young adults. In this consumer society we feel inclined to conform to the social pressures of prom. It is an expensive rite of passage for students and their families; it comes at the end of your school year as you are celebrating approaching adulthood. It has been taken from the USA and has become a part of culture worldwide. We have to buy rites of passages they are not something that we are just entitled to; they are not inclusive. If you can’t afford to go to prom you are excluded from it. Prom dresses range from £20 to over £500, you will most likely only wear your prom dress for one night of your life. …show more content…

Prom is a very expensive rite of passage because you need to look the part for example girls need a dress but also a clutch bag, hair, make-up, jewellery, travel, shoes, corsage and maybe even a spray tan. Or to top of your princess look a tiara. The prom business is estimated to be worth about £80 million and the average cost is £244 per person. This figure will increasingly continue to rise due to the competition to look the best; many people associate this with spending more money. A recent survey in Essex found that boys on average spend £525 less than girls. They spend less because they aren’t as focused about aesthetics. The prom experience is very different for boys and girls. A suit can be the same, all suits look very similar- most boys won’t care if someone is in the same suit as them. But a girl’s prom will be ruined if someone turns up in the same dress. The myth of prom is that you need a date, this puts pressures on both sexes to ask someone to go with them this also brings the negative aspects of rejection. The attire of ties at prom is similar to high heels they convey power however the ties match what their date is wearing taking away male
