Riptide - At the beginning of the story, Percy gets his sword Riptide from Chiron to defeat a fury, who was disguised as Percy's teacher. Chiron takes it back and tells Percy to bring his own writing utensil next time, trying to convince Percy that the fight never happened because Percy doesn't know that he is a half blood yet. Later on, after Percy knows that he is a half-blood, Chiron gives it to him just before he leaves for his quest, saying the sword has "a long and tragic past." Percy has used Riptide ever since against everyone he's battled. (http://riordan.wikia.com)
Riptide means the Greek name, Anaklusmos. It is made of Celestial Bronze, a material that works on gods, demigods, Titans, Giants, and monsters. It does not hurt mortals,

it just passes through them harmlessly. Annabeth’s Knife - Annabeth’s main weapon is her knife and she is very skilled in using it.
The blade is made out of celestial bronze just like Percy’s sword, therefore, it's only effective on monsters.
Annabeth first received the knife when she was 7 years old. It was given to her by Luke and he promised he will always be there for her. However, after Luke betrayed her and joined Kronos, it became the cursed blade of the Great Prophecy, because Luke broke the promise he made to Annabeth. The knife becomes much more meaningful throughout the series, but this chapter guide is strictly for The Lightning Thief.
Grover’s Reed Pipes - Percy’s best friend Grover Underwood has a very peculiar weapon. Rather than having a sword or knife he has reed pipes. Reed Pipes are a type of musical instrument used by satyrs. When satyrs play certain magical songs, the reed pipes can help them in many ways such as growing plants, capturing enemies, and keeping away insects and other pests. Reed Pipes are usually used by satyrs and fauns to play magical songs. However, satyrs and fauns can use the music generated by these pipes to channel their woodland magic. This magic can be used for tracking spells, blessings, or even grow trees to encase enemies. It is a satyr's main weapon, even if satyrs aren't usually very violent fighters. It is shown that when the satyrs play their reed pipes together they can channel powerful woodland magic. (http://riordan.wikia.com)

In The Lightning Thief Grover joins Percy and Annabeth on the Quest for Zeus' Master Bolt.Throughout the journey, Grover tried to use his reed pipes to help them, but they just sounded bad and were useless other than a tracking song. Zeus’ Master Bolt - The most important and perhaps powerful weapon in The Lightning Thief is Zeus’ Master Bolt.
The Master Bolt is the symbol of Zeus' power. The main conflict in the book is that The Master Bolt is stolen and
Percy and his father (Poseidon) are accused of stealing it. Zeus sent out Apollo, Athena, Artemis, and Ares, to search for The Master Bolt. Only Ares was able to find the true lightning thief (Luke). Nonetheless, Ares did not turn Luke over to Zeus. Instead, he kept the Bolt and Hades' Helm (Hades’ symbol of power) to start a war between the gods. Because of this, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover went out on a quest to bring back the Master Bolt. Soon, Ares met them, and gave Percy a backpack, which he had rigged, so that the backpack made the Bolt appear inside it when he arrived in the Underworld,to make Percy look like the lightning thief. After a long journey, Percy retrieves both items and returns them by defeating
Ares. As you can see, every weapon in The Lightning Thief has an important meaning to it. Many of the weapons are actually based off real Greek weapons and each one has it's own background and play an important role in the story. It is important to understand the weapons abilities and how they came into the characters possession. Characters Percy Jackson - Percy Jackson is the twelve-year-old protagonist of
The passage that I analyzed spans the action when Beowulf returns to the halls of Heorot after a harsh battle with Grendel’s mother. He returns to king Hrothgar in the great hall of Heorot to say that he has successfully completed his boast and killed Grendel’s mother. Beowulf states that it has been a very difficult underwater battle and that he has barely escaped with his life, “The fight would have been ended straightway if God had not guarded me” (Donaldson, 29). Beowulf mentions this due to the fact that the sword given to him by Unferth, called Hrunting, was powerless against Grendel’s Mother. Hrunting is useless against Grendel’s mother due to the fact that she has the same charm upon her as Grendel did, which is that no normal sword can pierce her skin. Then, by chance, Beowulf finds an ancient sword on a wall during the battle and uses it against the monster. This sword, which was crafted by the giants, is able to pierce the monster's skin and after one swing, the monster was cut in half. After using this ancient sword to murder the monster, Beowulf watches the blade of the sword melt away due to the toxicity of the monster's blood, until only the hilt was left. A hilt is the handle of a weapon or tool. The hilt is decorated with runic symbols and was given to King Hrothgar of the Danes as proof of Beowulf’s exploits. The King is also given the severed head of Grendel as further reassurance that their troubles at the great hall of Heorot is over.
The first sword used for fencing during this time was the broadsword. The broadsword was a large, double-bladed sword that was hard to use due to it’s heavyweight (Andrew 53). With the broadsword, came the sword-and-buckler technique. The sword-and-buckler technique involved using large, powerful slashes with the broadsword, and blocking with the buckler (a small shield strapped onto the forearm (Olsen 34). In the beginning of the 16th century, the rapier was introduced to fencing (Andrew 53). Unlike the thick and large broadsword, the rapier was thin light, long and maneuverable. With the rapier, a dagger was used for parrying and the rapier was used for attacking (Olsen 35). Later in the century, the dagger was replaced with a gauntlet due to gauntlet’s effectiveness in
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie is about a young boy who has just discovered that he is a demi-god Percy Jackson. His father is Poseidon and his mother has been keeping it from him for many years. There is a lightning bolt that is stolen from Zeus on Mt. Olympus and Zeus believes that Percy has stolen it and demands its return by the summer solstice. In the mean time Percy gets attacked by multiple magical and mythological beings. There is a camp that demi-gods are safe from these things which is where Percy’s mother and his protector, Grover, take him to. This is where Percy’s journey begins. After a few days of being at the camp he realizes what he has to do. His mother was taken by Hades to the underworld and Percy has to save her all while trying to prove to Zeus that he did not steal the Lighting bolt.
The sword just so happened to be a magical one that was blessed by the giants that made
Percy is immensely brave. He is not afraid to do anything if it meant he could save another's life, like he
However, what differentiates an amazing gambler from a good gambler, is someone who knows how to flourish further his or her winnings with one last hand, comparable to Beowulf. In Anglo-Saxon culture, knives were typically used among the lower class people because they were more easily accessible and cheaper than swords. Based on Grendel’s mother’s living situation, it can be assumed that she is not among the wealthiest people during her time and therefore, cannot afford expensive objects. Although she does own a sword of her own, which is described as “a blade that boded well, a sword in her armory,” it can be assumed she would be unable to afford a sword of this value if it weren’t “an ancient heirloom,” as Beowulf defines it as (1557-1558). During Beowulf’s fight with Grendel’s mother, she “pounced upon [Beowulf] and pulled out a broad, whetted knife” (1545-1546). Due to her lower economic status, Grendel’s mother must result to using cheaper weapons, specifically knives, as her means of defence. Although knives were not seen as a high social class object, they were effective when a final stab in a fight is needed to end the battle and a sword is not working as effectively. When Beowulf is fighting the dragon, and his sword fails him once again, he pulls out his knife and stabs the dragon, which leads to his death. During his
In both stories we see each King possess a famous sword which aids their defeats. King Arthur simply finds the "sword of the stone", called Excalibur. Excalibur is a symbol of King Arthur's sanctified kingship and the responsibly of his divine power. On the other hand, Unferth, one of the Danes, lent Beowulf his shining sword Hrunting. Beowulf used this sword, as foreshadowed in line 1496, to "gain glory" against Grendel's mother. Even though the sword itself failed him, he did not lose the battle and ended up killing her with a sword guarded by
Greek Mythology in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ focuses on Greek mythology and interprets this into a children’s story. Throughout the story, there are many references and adaptations to mythological tales, and each one is portrayed in a different way. Riordan writes this story as though Hercules, Zeus and Poseidon were still around today, and this would be the effect they would have on people in this day and age.
Sarpedon, it was a spear through the heart, and for Hector, it was the bronze of
same sword that Claudius was killed with. Both men are able to accomplish what they set
Over the course of this novel, Percy must embark on a quest to clear his name, much like Hercules had to endure his Twelve Labors. These Twelve Labors would prove to be a recurring theme for Percy throughout the entirety of his five-part series. While Hercules abandoned his quest with Jason for the Golden Fleece, Percy did not, and succeeded where the ancient hero had failed. Hercules was also directly referenced in Titan’s Curse in a flashback by Percy’s new friend and Hesperide Zoe, a goddess entrusted with protecting Hera’s apples which Hercules had stolen. Over the long chain of events throughout the entire series, Percy and his friends encountered and battled numerous monsters that Hercules had originally slain in his Twelve Labors, such as Cerberus, a hydra, the Nemean Lion, the Erymanthian Boar, and cleaning the Aegean stables, home to flesh-eating horses.
In my own opinion and point of view, I see the athame as either a knife or a sword. This is because a knife is just
Firstly, Eragon’s blue-infused ☺ (Hyphenated Modifier) sword, named Brisingr, is a necessary component to the story. Without his sword, he would not have been able to fight against Murtagh without his sword breaking. Due to himself having the elves’ strength, he needed a sword like all the Riders before him to ensure that his sword would not break in battle, not a sword that he could facilely swing and shatter like glass ☺ (Simile). Another reason his sword is important is because it encourages the Varden. In the reading, it says, “With me!’ shouted Eragon. He lifted Brisingr over his head, holding it
Within the Iliad Homer portrays through association and symbolism the sceptre as a representation of divine power. Agamemnon is the nominal owner of this sceptre, on which much emphasis is placed in the early stages of the poem. This relic, a sceptre once owned by Zeus, has a kingly and divine past and, as a result, is a symbol of authority, power, and recognition within the kingdom of Greece. Homer’s discussion of the sceptre in Books I and II serves to elucidate these characteristics of the sceptre.
Zeus is the god of law, justice, morals, thunder, lightning, and rain. It was his job to oversee and make sure laws were being kept. He was worshipped originally as a weather god. He was depicted as a middle-aged man with a youthful appearance; he was regale and was almost always shown ready to throw a lightning bolt (pantheon/zeus).
