Rio Grande Valley District of the Texas Society for Respiratory Care hosted a spectacular event with many great speakers. We were able to learn so much information about asthma, mechanical ventilation, current values pertaining to the Rio Grande Valley, and ventilator graphics. The speakers were very enthusiastic throughout their presentation and we were able to gain a lot of information. We were able to also see many booths in which included various and new mechanical ventilators available, CPAP/ BiPAP mask, and various vendors that were very patient with the many questions we had.
Elements of Neonatal Ventilation, was the first presentation given by Anatoliy Ilizarov, MD. His PowerPoint presentation was a bit different from the other speakers

I really enjoyed her presentation and the viewpoints that she had to offer over the topic. She made the presentation really enjoyable and interactive for all the attendants that had come to join. Health Disparities are differences in health between groups of people. Health disparities can be classified by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, age, disability, socioeconomic status, geographic location, or other population features. Health disparities indicators are social determinants of Health, Health Behaviors, and Health Outcomes. Individuals who are poorer are more likely to suffer from diseases, be cognitively and physically impaired, and experience higher mortality rates. Suad Ghaddar gave us opportunity to view the percentages of various areas of people living in poverty. 35% of Hidalgo County, 35% of Cameron County, and 39% of Starr Country live in poverty. Education was another topic discussed in which individuals with less education are more likely to experience obesity, substance abuse, and intentional and unintentional injury. It was surprising to see that My County of Hidalgo County had 62% of high school graduates. A big issue as well that plays a role in health disparities is Health care coverage. Uninsured young children have lower immunization rates, less likely to receive medical care for common childhood conditions, such as sore …show more content…
This presentation was very informative and he was able to make the presentation very interactive and interesting. There are three basic wave forms on a ventilator in which are Airway pressure/ Time, Flow/time, and Volume/Time. The parameters are displayed in waveforms showing the proximal airway pressure/Time, Inspiratory & Expiratory flow rate/Time, and Inspiratory & Expiratory Volume/Time. The loops show pressure/volume and Flow/Volume. Greg Ruiz went through various pictures and took time to explain to us the Flow/ Volume loops and how they function and are displayed. He showed us various shapes of the PV loop that can display controlled breath, assisted breath, and Spontaneous breathe. Over distention occurs when the “volume limit” of some components of the lung has been exceeded; in which causes an abrupt decrease in the lung compliance near the termination of inspiration. At the end of the PowerPoint presentation, we were given a quiz to see if we were able to tell what the issue included through the ventilator readings. Mr. Ruiz informed us that he really preferred a visual presentation such as graphing rather than numbers displayed on a ventilator. He also shared that the ventilator can show you everything that might be occurring with the patient and how you can help to resolve the
The socioeconomic gradient that exists in civilizations with low levels of societal equity has increasingly been implicated as a major contributor to the health status of individual citizens. Thus, it is unsurprising that the neighborhood or place in which a person lives, works, and plays is also a significant social determinant of health. The consequences of one’s environment can range from diminished mental health and increased stress all the way to the development of chronic disease and early mortality. The documentary Rich Hill successfully encapsulates the problems associated with living in poverty by examining the lives of three families from an impoverished area of Missouri. The filmmakers delve into the intricate interpersonal, family,
I believe that every citizen deserves good healthcare services regardless of his or her geographical area, income, or race. An underserved community is a community in which people are unable to obtain health care or have limited access to the health care system for different of reasons. These reasons include ethnic background, socioeconomic variables, lower salary in some areas, extreme weather, or other life circumstances that produces an uneven distribution of healthcare resources, including nurses. The individuals in underserved communities lack affordable comprehensive health insurance, have gaps in insurance, or are living in remote areas and unable to access care. Additionally, the lack of basic necessities such as money for food, medications,

Imagine the burning shame and crippling self-consciousness you would feel if you had to walk around with one of your front teeth cracked for over a month simply because your parents couldn’t afford to get it treated promptly. Now multiply that intense feeling of embarrassment three-fold, since this happened to a very image-conscious, fourteen-year-old me three days before my first day of high school. As both a minority and as someone who comes from an economically disadvantaged background, I have had experiences that have shaped me to understand the frustration and stigma that is associated with not having the privilege of access to health care simply because of where you live and your financial situation. My experiences have also made me aware of the importance of diversity in
The public needs to address racial disparities in health which is achievable by changing policy addressing the major components of socioeconomic status (income, education, and occupation) as well as the pathways by which these affect health. To modify these risk factors, one needs to look even further to consider the factors. Socioeconomic status is a key underlying factor. Several components need to be identified to offer more options for those working on policy making. Because the issue is so big, I believe that not a single policy can eliminate health disparities in the United States. One possible pathway can be education, like the campaign to decrease tobacco usage, which is still a big problem, but the health issue has decreased in severity. The other pathway can be by addressing the income, by giving low-income individuals the same quality of care as an individual who has a high
Although authors Canning & Bowser wrote the article “Investing in Health to Improve the Wellbeing of the Disadvantaged” to oppose Marmot’s article “The Marmot Review,” their above quote also debate points raised by other public health researchers such as Brunner and Krieger. The quote states that the health disparities from different populations results from lack of access to quality and affordable healthcare. This is partially true, but as the analyses of Marmot & Brunner and Krieger suggest, social exclusion due to race and economic status, the population’s work and childhood environment, in addition to other social factors, lead to problems in the medical care system (Marmot 3). In other words, health gradient is not only an indication of health systems failing but is also a result
People living in poverty can be thought of as a “them” who can be easily ignored and forgotten; when, in reality, poverty can affect anyone. When people are living in poverty, sometimes it is not their fault. Often, unfortunate events that are out of someone’s control can set them up for failure. For example, the poverty rate for disabled adults from the age of 18-64 is 28.5%, while disabled 18-64 year olds only make up 7.7% of America’s population (Proctor, Semega, and Kollar 16). Therefore, poverty disproportionately affects disabled adults. The stories of those living in poverty are incredibly diverse, as Sasha Abramsky points out in The American Way of Poverty:

Socioeconomic Disparities and health are growing at a rapid rate throughout the United States of America. To further understand the meaning of Socioeconomic Disparities, Health and Socioeconomic disparities & health, this essay will assist in providing evidence. Disparities can be defined in many ways, of which include ethnic and racial background and class types that deal with it the most. Due to the low income some individuals receive, they have less access to health care and are at risk for major health issues. Although, ethnicity and socioeconomic status should not determine the level of health care one should receive or whether not the individual receives healthcare.

“Pulmonary rehabilitation is an evidence-based, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive intervention for patients with chronic respiratory diseases who are symptomatic and often have decreased daily life activities. Integrated into the individualized treatment of the patient, pulmonary rehabilitation is designed to reduce symptoms, optimize functional status, increase participation, and reduce health care costs through stabilizing or reversing systemic manifestations of the disease” (Carlin, 2009; L. Nici et al., 2006). This definition focuses on important number of factors that may influence the patient’s health and healthcare resources. These factors are multidisciplinary approach, individualized treatment of the patient, and attention to physical, social and healthcare cost (Ries, 2008).
Racial discrimination can lead to depression as well as added stress to people’s lives, which you know can lead to higher chances of diseases. Unequal social conditions, such as nutrition and medical care can play a big role in the health of people of color. As the textbook states, white patients are more likely than their counterparts to receive knee placement or coronary bypass surgery, as well as a better chance to obtain a cardiac catheterization. These two examples of unintentional discrimination can immensely diminish the health of minority groups in the long run. [Henslin, 2016] Due to the structure of our society, racial discrimination can be a key determinant of someone’s SES, which as you now know plays a big factor in determining someone’s health. According to U.S. Poverty Statistics, African Americans and Hispanics have twice the poverty rate of non-Hispanic whites. [U.S. Poverty Statistics, 2016] While this stat is very shocking, I feel that is more important to dive into why our society is this
In closing, there are several effective methods of supplying respiratory support to patients. Although, the mechanical ventilator has many advantages as mentioned earlier, the bag-valve method proves to have the largest amount of advantages. However, it should be noted that the bag-valve technique has also proven to be problematic when attempting to offer respiratory support to nonintubated patients.
